The CIE/USA-DFW Annual Convention The theme of 2005 convention was Global Transformation The Flat World. This theme, derived from Thomas L. Friedman s current bestseller The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century, does not refer to our Earth s spherical shape, but rather to the connectedness of today s business world. Throughout the convention we discussed the hot issues of Globalization 3.0, the new, level playing field of global knowledge, and what this means for the new face of business. As always, this was the most important event of the year with an estimated attendance of 600 people, including local celebrities and executives of multinational high-tech corporations. As in previous years, this year s exciting program featured various technology and business sessions as well as a panel discussion with industry experts. Also, we were honored to present Eva Chen, co-founder and CTO of Trend Micro, as our dinner banquet keynote speaker and Mr. Patrick Jenevien, President of Tong Energy Group, as our opening keynote speaker. The CIE/USA-DFW Chairman of Board, Mr. Joe Jeng, presented the plaque to 2005 Annual Convention keynote speaker Ms. Eva Chen

13 Revamping the CIE-DFW Website We were pleased to introduce our new, upgraded website. The official CIE-DFW site has been professionally revamped. The site at is now an indispensable resource for staying connected. Youth Program In 2005, our CIE Math Comp & Math Fun event saw unprecedented attendance and participation. The speech contest and Essay writing contest were well received. Furthermore, we are continuing our steadfast sponsorship of the Young Achiever Award scholarship. After undergoing a selection process that grows more rigid every year, sixteen distinguished high school sophomores and juniors have been chosen and will be recognized at tonight s banquet for their outstanding achievements in academic performance, extracurricular activities, and community service Young Achiever Awardees and the sponsor presenters Leadership Assessment and Mentoring Program (LAMP) The purpose of LAMP is to help Asian Americans achieve their full potential by addressing the needs and opportunities for professional growth. The program is currently organized by CIE/USA-DFW and sponsored by Raytheon Company. In May of 2005, Path to Excellence experienced another fruitful year. Monthly Technical Seminars As the most active and influential engineering organization in the DFW area, we provide services to both professional societies and local communities. Technical seminars in telecommunications, microelectronics, information technology, and biotechnology and business management again provide the most up-todate and in-depth knowledge to our members and non-members. Officer Training We understand the importance of passing down CIE knowledge and tradition during the transition from one year s leaders to the next. At the end of every year we gather the board of directors, new officers, and convention committee members for a day of orientation. Orientation includes guidance and support from CIE s leaders in the following format: A senior advisor provides an inspirational speech, the current president reviews the activity report, and the new president sets goals and expectations for the coming year. At the end of orientation, the entire team participates in activities to examine important issues concerning the future of the organization.
