Topics will include: epidemiology of TB in New York City, prioritization of high-risk groups, hospital discharge planning, and diagnostic testing. The entire afternoon session will be dedicated to the use of interferon gamma release assays. The 2011 World TB Day Theme is Innovation and it reminds us to scale up efforts and continue to seek new and innovative ways to stop TB in NYC. TARGET AUDIENCE This conference is open to providers (pulmonary, infectious disease, community health, infection control) and health care workers who manage patients at risk for or diagnosed with TB. STATEMENT OF NEED The management of TB requires and multidisciplinary approach which relies on knowledge of the most current information of TB rates, populations at risk, and

This conference will provide a forum for learning this information as well as for discussion among colleagues. OBJECTIVES At the end of this conference, participants will be able to: Apply epidemiology of TB in New York City to recognize risk factors when encountering a TB patient in the community and health care facility Recognize high-risk populations and focus outreach activities to increase awareness about TB in the community Develop awareness of the new health code reporting requirement and collaborate with the health department to ensure proper treatment and monitoring of patients Describe new methods to diagnose and guide treatment of TB patients Employ the current guidelines for use of interferon gamma release assays to diagnose infection with M. tuberculosis in at risk persons METHOD OF PARTICIPATION In order to meet the learning objectives and receive continuing education credits, participants are required to register in advance, attend the entire course, and complete an evaluation form.
