1 Rank Foundation grant programme 2017 Information and criteria What is the programme? The Rank Foundation grant programme is to support capital projects that have a direct impact to patients in adult member hospices. In 2017 the theme is Conditions other than Cancer. Available funding Total available funding in this round is 100,000 and we are looking to make grants of up to 20,000 each. Deadlines Deadline for applications is 24 November Eligibility criteria Eligible organisations adult hospices that are full members of Hospice UK based in the UK, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. Eligible projects The Rank Foundation likes to support projects where they are the major or sole funder. They are not looking to contribute to work that forms part of a much larger project. Any capital project that is designed around the needs arising from patients with conditions other than cancer is eligible. Revenue costs that help deliver the capital activity can be included in the project costs but these must not be the primary expense. It is important that the project should demonstrate a direct benefit to patients with conditions other than cancer. 2 For example this could be: capital items to support the care of people with conditions other than cancer, such as environmental control systems, multi-sensory equipment; a project to support the care of people with conditions other than cancer which includes the purchase of equipment and/or improve room décor but also dedicated time of a staff member to lead the project (NB revenue must not be the primary expense); refurbishment of bedrooms for use by people with conditions other than cancer; refurbishment of bathrooms, including provision of specialist bathing equipment or hoists for use by people with conditions other than cancer; refurbishment of dining rooms, day areas or other common spaces for use by people with conditions other than cancer; reconfiguration of existing space and/or new building work for use by people with conditions other than cancer. Please note the above examples are for guidance only and we encourage applicants to be innovative in their approach. What is not eligible? Examples of projects that are not eligible include: refurbishment of staff rooms or other non-patient facilities; staff training or any other revenue activity; information technology, including IPads/tablets/PCs which do not directly benefit patients with conditions other than cancer; medical equipment; routine maintenance that has no noticeable effect on the care environment; requests for isolated pieces of equipment not related to conditions other than cancer; projects that do not directly benefit people with conditions other than cancer; applications for work that forms part of a much larger project; applications where revenue (salary cost) is the primary expense; work that has started before 24 November Application process Only one application will be considered from each hospice. The link to the online application form is available on our website Completing the online form Before you can access the online application form you will be asked several questions in the eligibility filter. If answered correctly, you will be directed to the full application form. When you are filling in your application form, please give concise answers as some questions may have a limit on the number of words you can write.

3 In addition, if a grant is awarded, we will ask you to report back on your project by referring to the answers written on your application form, so it is important to be realistic in your answers. Submitting the online form Once you have completed the application form you can submit it online. To submit, go to the last page of the form and at the bottom is a submit button. Once you are happy with your application, click submit. A copy of your application is available for you to access on your account page under My Applications. Please attach to your application: a signed statement of support on hospice headed paper from your chief executive letters of support from partner organisations any other supporting information, such as a feasibility study or scoping exercise, that identifies the need for the project. Deadline for submitting application and supporting documents is: 24 November Assessment process Applications will undergo a two stage assessment process. By Hospice UK Grants Team Stage one will include checking that the application meets the basic eligibility criteria. If further information is required at this stage, a member of the Grants Team will be in contact to request it. By Hospice UK s Major Grants Committee During the second stage all applications will be considered by Hospice UK s Major Grants Committee, which includes representatives from the Rank Foundation. Applications will be assessed against the following criteria: extent to which the project demonstrates a direct benefit to patients with conditions other than cancer as outlined in your application; the number of patients with conditions other than cancer directly benefiting from the project over a twelve month period; the extent to which the need for the project is demonstrated; how you plan to evaluate/measure the effectiveness of the project; the viability of the project, including the likelihood of it being completed by end December 2018; extent to which Rank Foundation is the sole or major funder of the project; extent to which the project represents value for money.

4 It is important that you address each point in your application. These are not listed in order of importance. In considering the overall strength of your application, the grant committee will particularly look at: how your project will make a difference to the lives of patients with conditions other than cancer, for example the types of services or facilities you will offer and how closely your project meets the criteria; why you think it will succeed in doing this, for example the strength of the project, assurance of further funding and plans to actively involve users in all stages of the project. If we receive more applications than we can fund and the project has been assessed and is strong enough to be in contention for a grant, hospice free reserve levels may be taken into account. In addition, if you are applying for items of equipment, it would be helpful if you prioritise the list so that the committee can make informed decisions if the grant level needs to be reduced. Your application s success can not be guaranteed and the committee s decision is final. What happens if successful? If your application for a grant is successful then we will send an award letter, together with an acceptance form, to the application sponsor, usually the chief executive, clinical director or equivalent of the hospice. The acceptance form must be signed by the application sponsor, as well as the applicant, agreeing to the conditions of the grant. We also ask you to confirm which date the project will start and when you expect to complete it. All grants must be claimed within twelve months of the start date. We reserve the right to withdraw funding after twelve months if it is not claimed, so it is important that you keep us up to date with progress. Payments will be made on submission of a grant claim form, together with evidence of expenditure such as copies of paid receipts and invoices in relation to the grant. After the work is done We will ask you to send us a final report twelve months after you receive your grant, which will ask for further information about what you have achieved and what wider differences the work has made to your hospice.
