Discuss resources that can be utilized. Discuss basic terminology. Review arguments for and against accreditation. Challenges to accreditation. Discuss the focus on outcomes and development of the plan. NLNAC Conquering the Self-Study Outcomes Report 2

What does it mean? Who defines? How is it measured? Why does it matter? Ongoing self-review Systematic assessment and evaluation Evidence-based decision-making Documentation Accreditation Manual Guidelines for the Preparation of the Self-Study Report FAQs Site Visit Documents Guidelines for Preparation and Submission of Planned and Unplanned Substantive Change Reports And many more.. NLNAC Conquering the Self-Study Outcomes Report 3

Accreditation is based upon the belief that maintenance and enhancement of education quality is possible through continuous self-assessment, planning, and improvement Professional development Formal education Involvement in accreditation Faculty Driven Continuing Evaluation Program Improvement Process results in the Self-Study Report NLNAC Conquering the Self-Study Outcomes Report 4

Outcomes Standards Goals Objectives Performance Indicators Efficiency Measures Effectiveness Indexes Promotes greater learning Prepares students for practices Raises expectations results Fosters authentic assessment Encourages decision-making Increase access; mobility; transferrability Reliance on standardized testing Focuses too heavily on factual knowledge Undermines professional judgment Riddled with assumptions about learning NLNAC Conquering the Self-Study Outcomes Report 5

A working plan what does that mean to you and your colleagues? How do you demonstrate to the reviewers and others that the plan is fully implemented? More than just the numbers Philosophy/Mission driven Faculty defined Curriculum based Improvement oriented Population focused What did we learn? NLNAC Conquering the Self-Study Outcomes Report 7

Comprehensive Ongoing Systematic Components of program Levels of Achievement Timeframes Methods of assessment Development Maintenance Revision NLNAC Conquering the Self-Study Outcomes Report 8

Graduation Rates Licensure Rates Certification rates Program Satisfaction Employer Graduate Putting the data to work for you Decision-making based on Results! The NLNAC accreditation processes demonstrate a high degree of effectiveness in assuring comprehensive review for all nursing program types. The NLNAC Standards and Criteria provide for effective assessment of program quality. NLNAC Conquering the Self-Study Outcomes Report 9

NLNAC-accredited programs graduate the overwhelming majority of newly licensed RNs. NLNAC Accredited Program Graduates Non-NLNAC Accredited Program Graduates Licensure examinations pass rates for graduates of NLNAC-accredited programs continue to exceed NCSBN published data. NCLEX-RN NLNAC: 88.8% NCSBN: 88.1% NCLEX-PN NLNAC: 91.8% NCSBN: 87.9% More than 3/4 of NLNAC-accredited programs reported NCLEX-RN pass rates at or above 85% 83% of NLNAC-accredited programs reported NCLEX-PN pass rates at or above 85% NLNAC Conquering the Self-Study Outcomes Report 10

The graduation rates for NLNAC-accredited programs continue to exceed 70% across all program types. Evaluation of student learning demonstrates that graduates have achieved identified competencies consistent with the institutional mission and professional standards and that the outcomes of the nursing education unit have been achieved. Faculty develop and revise the curriculum. Faculty agree that the curriculum reflects educational theory. Students believe that orientation to technology is available. 100% of faculty agree that evaluation methods are varied. Employers are satisfied with the program. NLNAC Conquering the Self-Study Outcomes Report 11

6.1 The systematic plan for evaluation emphasizes the ongoing assessment and evaluation of the student learning and program outcomes of the nursing education unit and NLNAC standards. 6.2 Aggregated evaluation findings inform program decision making and are used to maintain or improve student learning outcomes. 6.3 Evaluation findings are shared with communities of interest. 6.4 Graduates demonstrate achievement of competencies appropriate to role preparation. 6.5 The program demonstrates evidence of achievement in meeting the following program outcomes: Performance on licensure exam Program completion Program satisfaction Job placement NLNAC Conquering the Self-Study Outcomes Report 12

6.5.1 The licensure exam pass rates will be at or above the national mean Expected levels of achievement for program completion are determined by the faculty and reflect program demographics, academic progression, and program history Program satisfaction measures (qualitative and quantitative) address graduates and their employers Job placement rates are addressed through quantified measures that reflect program demographics and history. For nursing education units engaged in distance education, the additional criterion is applicable: 6.6 The systematic plan for evaluation encompasses students enrolled in distance education and includes evidence that student learning and program outcomes are comparable for all students. NLNAC Conquering the Self-Study Outcomes Report 13

Focus and Format Is there an effective working plan in place? Does the plan work for the program? Are your students achieving the learning outcomes? Are there clearly documented evidences that the outcomes are guiding change(s)? Essential Elements Data for student learning outcomes Data for program outcomes Evidence of use of data Documentation of changes and/or revisions A living plan not one that is dusted off in preparation for a visit. Clear, consistent documentation of data collection and analysis. Evidence of use for decisionmaking. Faculty ownership of the plan and process. Focus on continuous improvement. NLNAC Conquering the Self-Study Outcomes Report 14

Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with the plan. Tom Landry Contact Information: nard@nlnac.org NLNAC Conquering the Self-Study Outcomes Report 15
