2 II. RATIONALE FOR PROGRAM According to the United States Department of Labor s Occupation Outlook Handbook obtained from ( the outlook for Registered Nurses is as follows: o Employment of RNs is projected to grow must faster than average, with an estimated growth in employment of approximately 526,800 positions across the nation will be appreciated by the year 2022; much faster than average for all occupations, in response to the health care needs of an increasing elderly population and the need for health promotion/disease prevention in our nation. o Demand for RNs is driven by the increase in the share of the older population and the health care needs associated with the aging population. o The average age of RNs in the current workforce is 44.6 years of age thus the potential exodus from employment for those choosing retirement will contribute to the RN workforce need (obtained from on 10/22/2014) o Predicted growth in employment in physician s offices, outpatient care centers and in home health will occur as care delivery shifts from the acute care setting to the community setting in the care of chronic illnesses. o Recent reform in healthcare will give access to millions of individuals thus increased the demand for delivery of care As of 10/22/2014, 5,223 jobs relating to Registered Nursing within 100 miles of KCCC were posted on Indeed.com and 173, 818 posted on the Ohio Means Jobs website ( Tracking of Completion, Licensure and Placement rates is an ongoing process that provides evidence of program effectiveness in implementation of competent graduates. Data for the LPN to RN program will be reported after graduation of its first cohort. Completion rates Licensure rates Placement rates Programs associated with Knox Technical Center Adult Education are known for their for their ability to prepare graduates, through a hands-on approach, with the knowledge and skills required for the graduate to be successful in obtaining required licensure and/or certification and to be successful in the employment field. Given the ongoing level of inquiry from prior PN graduates regarding KTC s intent to develop a program and knowing the current market trends, it is clear that the program would support both community and employer needs. See Addendum A for Advisory Committee members. LPN to RN Program Rev: 11/2017 AM Page 2 of 8

3 III. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The LPN to RN program builds on the knowledge base of the Practical Nurse to provide graduates with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of a Registered Nurse based on current standards, guidelines, and competencies documented in nursing and nursing education literature. The program is career development program implemented, over 48 weeks, and provides 900 hours of instruction. The 48 weeks is divided into three (3) Terms. PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY AND MISSION Knox Technical Center s philosophy is based on the principles of vocational education, which emphasize knowledge, skills, and attitudes that provide necessary qualities for the adult learner to be able to obtain specific skills in nursing to meet educational goals. The mission of the LPN to ADN program aligns with the PN program's mission of providing an educational environment that enables progressive career pathways in the changing healthcare environment. To that end, the PN to ADN program builds on the knowledge base of the Practical Nurse to provide graduates with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of a Registered Nurse based on current standards, guidelines, and competencies documented in the nursing and nursing education literature. Knox Technical Center LPN to ADN program applies the definition of nursing presented by the American Nurses Association (2010) as well as the definition of the practice of nursing as a registered nurse as presented in the Ohio Board Rules, Section as: "Providing to individuals and groups nursing care requiring specialized knowledge, judgment, and skill derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences. Such nursing care includes: 1. Identifying patterns of human responses to actual or potential health problems amenable to a nursing regimen 2. Executing a nursing regimen through the selection, performance, management, and evaluation of nursing actions 3. Assessing health status for the purpose of providing nursing care 4. Providing health counseling and health teaching 5. Administering medications, treatments, and executing regimens authorized by an individual who is authorized to practice in this state and is acting within the course of the individual's professional practice 6.
