There s a lot going on, and we don t want you to miss a thing. Always remember -- this is your newsletter. So, if you have ideas for stories or features you think other Florida Hospital employees would enjoy, we d love to hear from you! You can send your feedback to Stephanie.Wright@FLHosp.org. Thanks for reading! PAUSE PEACE for We need each other. By Robyn Edgerton Administrative Director of Mission Development Two are better than one,... If one falls down, his friend can help him up. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12) Moses is one of my Bible heroes. God chose him to lead more than a million Israelites out of Egypt toward the Promised Land. With the unprecedented job ahead of him, pressure was enormous, and it got heavier as the march seemed to make less and less progress. People were tired. They wanted different schedules, different food and sometimes a different leader. Moses listened to complaining and bickering all day long. But what was he to do? He was the leader. And at the end of the day, there was still a line of people waiting to tell him their problems. SHARE Canned Food Drive Begins March 21 The annual Florida Hospital SHARE Canned Food Drive begins March 21, 2016, and will run through Friday, April 1, The Second Harvest Food Bank is counting on us again this year to help them replenish the shelves. Collection bins will be located at all hospital campuses. Please see your campus coordinator for more information about the events planned at your work location. 2 THE TIMES One night after getting to his tent quite late, he noticed his father-in-law s face. It was one of concern. Moses, he said, What are you doing? Why are you the only one judging people s disputes? Moses replied, Because the people come to me to seek God s will. I m their leader. His father-in-law said, This is not a good thing! You are wearing yourself out. You can t handle this alone. Listen to me; you need to appoint representatives that the people can come to, to handle their disputes. Teach them God s instructions. And have them only bring the cases that are too difficult for them. Don t allow yourself to burn out. Moses took his father-in-law s advice and created leaders and managers that could alleviate his burden. He learned the value of delegation and leaning on others. We need each other. We often try to do it all, instead of relying on those around us. We will be happier and healthier when we lean on one another for support. That s CREATION Health!
3 A Lesson in Listening By Sara Vulicevic Imagine you ve had a stressful day, and a good friend calls you. Your friend listens and provides words of support. How did it make you feel? Patients and families who come through Florida Hospital are often caught up in the stress of dealing with disease, and sometimes even death. Diana Soler sees this daily, as she provides medical records to patients at Florida Hospital Celebration Health. She shared a story with me recently about a connection she formed with a patient. Soler noticed that he was beginning to stop by her office frequently. Taking the time to make a connection, the patient shared with her that he had just been recently diagnosed with cancer. Every time he would stop by, Soler made time to listen to his news about his health and inquire about his family. In return, the patient began to bring in little mementos, such as a postcard from a recent trip, because he knew Soler collected them as a hobby. As I listened to Soler share her story, it was easy to see who was really impacted by the interactions. She summed up the experience in her own words, sharing, I enjoy it when a patient has felt we have done our jobs well and made them feel as comfortable as possible while they were here. This makes me happy to place a smile on a patient s face simply by listening. She is right -- listening is simple, but the act itself is vital to effective communication. More importantly, it provides an opportunity for empathetic dialogue. I am reminded of a quote I have posted in my office by Patrick Ryan, chief executive officer of Press Ganey. It says, The confusion with which some folks come into the industry is that patient satisfaction is about keeping people happy, but it couldn t be further from that. When people enter the health system, they re coming in at one of the Diana Soler most complex and stressful times in their lives. And what they want most from the experience is communication and understanding. Did you catch that?...what they want most from the experience is communication and understanding. Do you recall that phone call from a friend? That call made an impact because someone took the time to listen. When we do the same for our patients, we create lasting meaningful relationships and fulfill our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ. Do you have a patient experience story that impacted your life? We want to hear from you! Please FHPatientExperience@FLHosp.org. THE TIMES 3
4 PEOPLE & NEWS at Florida Hospital And the United Way trophy goes to. the Altamonte campus! Local Woman Donates Hundreds of Red Hats for Newborns at Winter Park Memorial Hospital Over the past several months, Jo Marks has crocheted nearly 300 pint-sized red hats the perfect amount to outfit each baby delivered in February at the Dr. P. Phillips Baby Place at Winter Park Memorial Hospital. With every hat she donated, Marks hopes to raise awareness of an important issue heart disease and congenital heart defects. Typically people think heart disease just affects older people, but it affects babies, too, Marks said. The traveling United Way trophy now has a new home on the Altamonte campus. Pictured from left to right are Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer Heather Long, Altamonte Administrator Doug Harcombe and Volunteer and Guest Services Manager Heather Reasoner. Marks got started on the hats last November, and on average, crocheted six a day. She was inspired by the American Heart Association s (AHA s) Little Hats, Big Hearts initiative, which promotes awareness for heart disease and congenital defects by donating crocheted hats to newborns. The numbers are in, and Florida Hospital employees came through once again in the 2015 Florida Hospital United Way campaign by contributing $440,899. This is a new record in the history of the entire campaign. In addition, the hospital made a corporate gift of $45,000, which brought the grand total to $485,899. Congratulations to the Altamonte campus, which had the highest participation rate, placing the Courtland campus in the number two spot after a two-year winning streak. Apopka, East Orlando, Maitland, Winter Park and Kissimmee led the rest of the locations, respectively. A special thanks to those employees who helped make this year s campaign a success. Your continued generosity demonstrates your commitment to our culture of service and the importance of giving back to our community. Jo Marks, third from left, delivered nearly 300 red hats for babies at Winter Park Memorial Hospital, just in time for American Heart Month. 5 Two Nurses Complete 2015 Nursing Research Residency Program Each year, Clinical Excellence and Research provides the Nursing Research Residency Program to support clinical nurses and nursing research aligned with Florida Hospital s Strategic Innovation Agenda. In 2015, Katherine George, RN, Orlando, and Lisa Pannell, ARNP, Florida Hospital for Children, were selected to take part in the yearlong internship. George s work resulted in the development of a standard operating procedure to be piloted in the Hyperbaric Unit to help ensure a safe minimal blood glucose level prior to hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Pannell s study supports future education strategies for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurses. Both study outcomes have been presented internally and will be submitted for publication and conference presentations. 6 A Right of Passage Tammy Land extends healing to patients at the end of their journeys in life. COVER STORY I confess that as a nurse, I considered myself in the healing business and never really knew what happened to patients who were given a terminal diagnosis, said Land. At Hospice, the goal is also to get patients home, but now the healing we provide occurs in death. Florida Hospital acquired Hospice of the Comforter in January 2014, which seemed like a perfectly logical step, considering the hospital s commitment to providing patients with a continuum of care. One of the first changes that occurred during the transition was to transform the Patient Access Department from a typical business department into a department whose priority was to provide compassionate patient care. And who better to lead those efforts than a highly experienced nurse like Land. Tammy Land and Meghan Mainelli Tammy Land has spent her entire 32-year nursing career with Florida Hospital, extending the healing ministry of Christ by helping patients get well so they can return home and get on with their lives. Seven months ago, her career took quite a different path when she accepted a position as the director of Patient Access for Hospice of the Comforter. Today, that healing occurs by helping families care for their loved ones who have been given less than six months to live. Land admits that she has never been one to embrace change, as is evident by her long-standing career in the Cardiac Unit on the Orlando campus. But after learning about the services Hospice provides, she decided it was time for a change. The Patient Access Department responds to initial calls received from physicians, patients and their families seeking information about the end-oflife services provided by Hospice of the Comforter. Under Tammy s leadership, she has not only greatly improved the communication process so that patients better understand all of their options, but has transformed the Patient Access Department from one that was task-oriented, to one that is more patient-centered, said Administrator Ernesto Lopez. Her contributions have been invaluable. Today, Lopez states that more than 60 percent of the referrals received are seen within the same day. In the race of life, it s easy to focus on the race itself and give very little thought to what happens when we re at the finish line, said Land. But when patients come to us, the goal is to help them understand the best way they can peacefully complete their journey. 6 THE TIMES

9 March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month Iconic beauty, Audrey Hepburn Funnyman behind the beloved Peanuts cartoons, Charles Schulz TV s cutest witch, Elizabeth Montgomery What did iconic beauty Audrey Hepburn, cartoonist Charles Schulz and television s cutest witch Elizabeth Montgomery have in common? Each of them died from colorectal cancer. It s not beautiful, funny or cute to talk about, but catching colorectal cancer early through a routine colonoscopy could just save your life. Because colon cancer can develop with no signs or symptoms, a regular colonoscopy is the best method for finding pre-cancerous polyps. The second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, this disease is often preventable, and early detection and treatment are critical. According to the American Cancer Society, the colon cancer death rate in this country could be cut in half if Americans simply followed recommended screening guidelines. If caught early, colorectal cancer is 90 percent curable. A colonoscopy is not as uncomfortable as you may think, and there s no need to feel embarrassed during the procedure. It s your doctor s job to perform these lifesaving screenings, and every effort is made to help patients feel comfortable. You ll be asked to follow a clear liquid diet the day before your procedure. This means only water, clear broth, soda, tea, coffee (without milk/creamer), clear juice (without pulp), Jell-O, popsicles and other flavored drinks. You ll be given instructions on using a laxative mixture to empty your bowel so that your colon can be viewed clearly. During the colonoscopy, your doctor will look at the inner lining of your large intestine (which includes your rectum and colon). A thin, flexible tube called a colonoscope is inserted while you are semisedated. Most patients have very little awareness that the procedure is even taking place, and it is usually completed within an hour. Along with functioning as a screening test to check for cancer or pre-cancerous polyps in the colon or rectum, a colonoscopy can also help find ulcers, tumors and areas of inflammation or bleeding. It s important to be screened for colon cancer, even if you are not currently experiencing symptoms or signs of the polyps or cancers. If you re age 50 or over (45 or older for African Americans), call (407) today to schedule your routine colon cancer screening with a physician, or visit ScheduleYourScreening.com. THE TIMES 9
