2 Background of VA NYHHS SimLEARN Simulation Learning, Education and Research Network or SimLEARN at the VA NYHHS is linked to the national simulation training & education program for the Veterans Health Administration The Simulation Learning Center opened at the VA NYHHS on April 12, 2011 The mission of SimLEARN is to provide an opportunity for VA staff & students to develop knowledge & skills through simulation learning Goals of the SimLEARN Center Provide simulated training that enhances efficiency & competency Increase communication, teamwork &critical thinking skills Promote patient safety through realistic simulated training Enhancing safety & providing excellent Veteran care. SimLEARN provides hospital staff the opportunity to learn & practice Code 2000 competencies Behavioral Crisis Intervention Team (Code 2000) A crisis is defined as any act, imminent act or threat of physical violence that staff require assistance to safely manage the situation The Code 2000 Team consists of: 1. Psychiatrist 2. RNs, LPNs & NAs working in MH 3. Police Officers (2) 4. Supervisor The Code 2000 Team responds to crises calls throughout the Medical Center Kaplan, Battinelli-Weng 2

3 Behavioral Crisis Intervention Team (Code 2000) Interventions of the Code 2000 Team: 1. Maintain Safety 2. Observe Mental Status 3. Formulate diagnostic impression & course of action 4. Verbally De escalate 5. Administration of Medications (as needed) 6. Initiation of Restraints (as last resort) 7. Establish Plan of Care 8. Debrief Code 2000 Simulation Experience During a Code 2000 simulation experience, participants practice preprogrammed scenarios based on various psychiatric emergencies Scenarios are designed to demonstrate proper procedures, critical thinking, decision making & appropriate safety techniques for Code 2000 Team responders during psychiatric emergencies Through role playing, team responders practice patient de escalations, verbal techniques and application of behavioral restraints Code 2000 Simulation Experience SimLEARN helps to promote staff & patient safety by practicing real life situations in a simulated environment Simulation training for Code 2000 has the benefit of teaching staff to respond to crisis situations in a safe and effective manner After the Code 2000 simulation experience the team members debrief &discuss appropriate responses during the code and what, if anything, could have been changed or improved Kaplan, Battinelli-Weng 3

4 Why Use SimLEARN? Simulations mimic the reality of a clinical environment. SimLearn is designed to demonstrate procedures, decision making, and critical thinking through techniques such as role playing, interactive videos & mannequins Develop skills and gain experience without fear of causing harm to actual patients Opportunity to participate in cutting edge training Why Use SimLEARN? A chance to train an Interdisciplinary Team (Psychiatrist, Registered Nurse, LPN, NA/HCT, Police Officers) using reallife scenarios. They work as a team, learn from their mistakes and gain valuable skills SimLEARN provides staff with the needed skills and confidence to safely and effectively respond to psychiatric emergencies and prevent injuries to patients and staff SimLEARN allows staff the opportunity to problem solve, decrease anxiety, BD2improve teamwork skills, and use their clinical judgment to achieve optimal patient outcomes What Does the Research Say? Research indicates that the use of simulation type training gives as good or better results than other traditional learning methods (Dillon, Noble & Kaplan, 2009) Research shows that simulation is an effective teaching strategy for nurses and other healthcare professionals. Simulation is often used to evaluate clinical judgment and competencies in different clinical settings (Olejniczak, Schmidt & Brown, 2010) Simulation laboratories provide opportunities for nurses to practice skills with increasing levels of complexity, to think critically, to apply theory to practice prior to clinical experiences, and to evaluate the effects of their interventions (Rauen, 2001) Kaplan, Battinelli-Weng 4
