BOX , NAIROBI, KENYA TELEPHONE : / gracestevewanjiku@yahoo.com WORKING EXPERIENCE THE KENYATTA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES - DEPARTMENT OF NURSING SCIENCES- FROM SEPTEMBER 2011 TO DATE I have been working as a lecturer charged with teaching the Bachelor of Science degree in nursing program. I have also been involved in reviewing the curriculum for the basic students and preparing the master s program curriculum. These include the uronephrology nursing, critical care nursing, medical surgical nursing and oncology nursing curriculums. I supervise students in the clinical areas and in research as well as care studies. I am in charge of the time table for the department and the welfare of the staff. I am also charged with following up students in the clinical areas where I supervise them and assess their skills. I belong to the renal nurses association of Kenya, critical care chapter and the national nurses association of Kenya. I have presented several scientific papers in conferences. I am also charged in training in several counties as far as prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV is concerned and also pediatric HIV for USAID through Kenyatta University. I provide training services for the population council on malaria disease management and prevention in conjunction with USAID. THE NAIROBI HOSPITAL SCHOOL OF NURSING FROM NOVEMBER 2010 TO AUGUST 2011 I worked as a senior lecturer charged with teaching a higher diploma in critical care nursing. I also worked in the specialized departments basically to guide the students in their clinical experience. I introduced a research presentation document and an academic writing document in the school. I was involved in reviewing the 2011 curriculum for the critical care course. THE NAIROBI UNIVERSITY-SCHOOL OF NURSING SCIENCES FROM SEPTEMBER 2008 TO OCTOBER 2010 I undertook my masters degree in critical care nursing. I went for my clinical experience at the Kenyatta National Hospital-critical care unit, accident and emergency department, renal unit, operating theaters and cardiology department. I graduated in December I assisted various Hospitals in proving automated peritoneal dialysis to their patients during my free time. This included, Nairobi hospital, Agakhan hospital, Gertrude Children s hospital and Nairobi West Hospital

2 PHARMA-SPCIALITIES LIMITED FROM SEPTEMBER 2006 TO NOVEMBER 2008 I worked for the above named company as a renal product specialist. I was charged with marketing anti-rejection drugs, erythropoietin and peritoneal as well as haemodialysis products. I carried out demonstrations on both automated and manual peritoneal dialysis using the Baxter products from US to both the renal patients and the nurses. I covered the whole country and was actively involved in carrying out seminars in various Hospitals in the country. I attended to renal patients on peritoneal dialysis in their homes and did follow up visits in the hospitals. Iam well versed with Baxter APD and Gambro haemodialysis machines. I actually started the Baxter program in the country after going for Baxter training twice in South Africa. I always followed up patients to their homes and gave direct care in the homes where I gave teachings to the diabetics, HIV and renal patients. I occasionally joined surgeons in theater during peritoneal catheter insertions. WESSEX PHARMCEUTICAL COMPANY AND PHARMA-SPCIALITIES LIMITED NOVEMBER 2005 TO SEPTEMBER 2006 Joined the two companies as a renal product specialist where I was charged with promoting dialysis products, anti-rejection drugs, erythropoietin and flutan. I, thus, was providing information to renal nurses, nephrologists, physicians, urologist, cardiologist, pharmacist and oncologist. I also followed up patients in their homes. THE KENYATTA NATIONAL HOSPITAL NAIROBI FEBRUARY 2005 TO OCTOBER 2005 I was deployed in the male and female orthopedic ward at the position of a Nursing Officer One. I was charged with giving direct nursing care to orthopedic and diabetic patients. I was involved in teaching KMTC and BScN students in the ward. I also assisted in the administrative duties in the ward. FEBRUARY 2003 TO FEBRUARY 2005 I rejoined the Kenyatta national Hospital Renal unit at the position of a Nursing Officer One. I was charged with giving direct nursing care to renal patients and carried out administrative duties.

3 THE AGAKHAN HOSPITAL NAIROBI NOVEMBER 1995 TO FEBRUARY 2003 I joined the Aga Khan Hospital renal unit in November 1995 as a Staff Nurse. I was involved in planning and implementing the nursing care of renal patients. In several occasions I was left as the shift leader. I nursed many patients with HIV nephropathy on peritoneal dialysis. In 1997, I was promoted to the position of a nursing sister, a position I held until the date of my resignation. In this position I was involved in assisting the unit manager in her administrative duties along with patient care responsibilities. I was also involved in continuous education in the hospital by giving lectures on renal nursing whenever such an opportunity arose. I was the quality assurance representative in the unit and formulated standards as well as implemented them in the unit. I was involved in quality assurance audits in the hospital. I was a member of the diabetic committee and once acted as the hospital infection control coordinator. I gained a lot of knowledge and experience in the care and management of renal patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis and patients who had undergone kidney transplant. I was the infection control unit representative at the time of my resignation. KENYATTA NATIONAL HOSPITAL MARCH 1995 NOVEMBER 1995 I worked in the private wing as a Nursing Sister after completing my Midwifery course. I was later promoted to Nursing Officer One. I was involved in planning and implementing the nursing care of patients. I assisted in the general administration of the ward and represented the unit in the quality assurance committee of the hospital. This was the committee involved in checking and controlling the quality of care of patients in the whole hospital. APRIL 1992 FEBRUARY 1994 I worked as a Nursing Sister in the intensive care unit. I was involved in the planning and implementing of nursing care of critically ill patients. I occasionally acted as a team leader charged with general administrative responsibility of the unit. I worked briefly in the renal unit. THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH AUGUST 1991 APRIL 1992 MANDERA DISTRICT HOSPITAL I worked in a pediatric unit as the Nurse in charge. I did general administration of the unit, planned and implemented care of the patients. I occasionally did clinical diagnosis and planned for medical management of the patients in the absence of the doctor and the clinical officers.

4 JULY KERICHO DISTRICT HOSPITAL I worked in the isolation ward as the Nurse in charge of the unit. I planned and carried out nursing care of patients who needed isolation. I did general ward administration. JULY 1989 JUNE 1990 KERICHO DISTRICT HOSPITAL I worked in the male ward as the unit in charge. I was involved in the day-to-day planning and implementing of patients care. I did general ward administration. AUGUST 1988 JUNE 1989 KERICHO DISTRICT HOSPITAL I worked in the pediatric unit as a Staff Nurse where I was involved in planning and implementing of nursing care of patients. I deputized the unit in charge in carrying out general administrative work. I did a lot of presentations including defending my research proposal and my thesis successfully. I covered HIV and other important topics in critical care as well as renal nursing in details. October 2013 Participated in the medical & surgical camp conducted in the Kingdom of Swaziland in the Ministry of health through ECSA-HC I have presented several researches in the critical care chapter, Renal nursing association and Nephrology association conferences. September 2013 Participated in the Kenya renal association at the Mombasa continental resort and presented a paper on peritoneal dialysis I also carry out consultancy work whenever I am called upon by hospitals and companies I have trained both government and private sector health workers on malaria management for division of malaria disease control in the ministry of health using the current WHO guide lines in the year-2012 & 2013 I have trained PMTCT and paediatric HIV in 2013 for Funzo kenya in Makueni, Kiambu and Machakos counties. I participated in a nursing exhibition during the Florence Nightingale s week where I represented medical ward in Aga Khan Hospital and attained an overall second position in I have participated in community teachings and demonstrations on HIV/AIDS in churches and others organized by the Kenya Red Cross severally. I have served the community with passion by being part of the health team in the church where I provide free advisory service to those who have health problems. I occasionally train in the couples seminars as well as teenagers and I am devoted to visiting orphans as well as widows I presented a paper on CAPD in Kenya in the sixth scientific conference held at The Aga Khan Hospital in I presented a paper on Quality Control in ISO certification Quality Management Systems during the Aga Khan University open day in the year I presented the same paper at the national nurses association meeting in Kisumu the same year. I used to volunteer in teaching the intensive care diploma nurses students at the Kenyatta National Hospital during my free time. I teach the youth in the church on HIV/AIDS as well as couples seminars. I also did work in two other dialysis centers in Nairobi during off duty hours

7 I was a class representative during my general nursing and midwifery courses. I have attended workshops and conferences on renal nursing organized by the association of Nephrologists. I have also attended other workshops on service excellence, quality assurance, and burns management among others.
