1 Aug 20, 2008 KEDI school for Adivasi Girls. 1. Asha contributed Rs 321,000 ($8000) for Recurring expenses of KEDI school. KEDI has applied for FCRA but has not yet received the approval. This amount was remitted to Sarvodaya Parivar Trust, as SPT is mentoring KEDI & supports its activities. 2. Asha Silicone valley chapter had approved $ 25,000 for the construction of the balance building for the school, which was only partly completed due to lack of funds. SPT however, was not in a position to receive such a large amount. The approved funds could not be remitted & the building has remained incomplete. 3. KEDI is progressing very well. In the academic year starting June 08, They have admitted 35 Girl students. The school has 72 students now. 4. We have seen the enormous difference made in the lives of Adivasi girl students, when they get a chance to learn. In our opinion KEDI is one of the finest examples of highly qualified people devoting their lives for improving the lives of the most disadvantaged children in India. 5. KEDI is now starting a Nursing School for their students. 15 students will be taken in this stream. The training & teaching will be done by like minded Doctors & Hospital. ARCH, an NGO devoted to health care of Adivasi & managed by Dr. Daksha Patel is in the same campus as KEDI. They will provide some help in infrastructure, teaching & patient contact. 6. The Nursing school is a very good idea. Very few nurses from the cities are willing to go to remote Adivasi villages. The health care available to Adivasis is extremely poor. Nurses trained at KEDI could probably return to their communities & could also provide primary health care.

2 KAIVALYA TRUST Interact Impact - Progress Kedi Residential School Report We have not been able to keep in touch, as often this year as we were out of country for six months. We are glad that some of you regularly visited Kedi School in our absence. The new school year started from June 16 th 2008, with 35 new enrollments of students in std. VIII. Now, we have 72 students in the school. Teaching staff has increased to seven full time teachers. As for Vocational Training, there also is a great progress. Because of great demand for truly Well Trained Nurses and Home Healthcare Nurses, we have started a Nursing school, in collaboration with ARCH. At present, fifteen students have enrolled for this course. Presently, there is a teaching staff of three consisting two doctors and a nurse. Starting from this new term, we have introduced growing Organic Vegetables. Not only the students have planted various vegetables and fruits, but they also are making observations and keeping note of it along with the data regarding yield, market price, types of soil to be prepared and variety of organic fertilizers and spray to be used to save vegetables from insects and grow it with minimum expense. At a later stage, we will also introduce other profit making methods and to form a co-operative society to get the maximum benefit out of it. The school is in process of purchasing computers for computer workshop. We have appointed one teacher for the subject. We have a goal to train students who do not just acquire some general knowledge by attending four to six months courses, but learn to make a good use of this tool to the proficient level and turn out to be job-ready. Of course we are imparting all the basic skills like Cutting and Stitching, various types of Embroidery, Cooking Nutritious Food, Preparing saplings and Maintaining Nursery etc. The academic achievements as well as holistic progress of all the previous students have surpassed our expectations. What the staff members and trustees are trying to achieve is to improve the standard of learning across the board. All of us like to see each and every student improving and progressing in their academic and other abilities, rather then few students getting very high scores, few more getting medium score and half of the students not making much progress. We are proud to say that during past two years, in spite of few small inconveniences, the academic level of almost all the students have raised greatly. We have learned a lot by constantly interacting with students. There are hundreds of stories, both happy and sad, that we can share with you. That is why we are awaiting your visit.
