1 LANDBOUSKOOL VRYHEID AGRICULTURAL SCHOOL WE STRIVE TO: HOSTEL RULES Make the hostel affordable for everyone; To make the hostel a friendly and nice environment to stay in; To teach everyone to respect each other s uniqueness and privacy; Make it a safe place to stay (no weapons/ammunition/dangerous objects will be allowed with learners and some doors have to be kept locked); Rules prevent ignorance and misunderstandings, which causes unhappiness and uncertainty. (Clock times and rules should be obeyed by all learners) 1. GENERAL RULES 1.1 The Hostel should be kept clean and tidy at all times supported by high hygienic standards. 1.2 Everybody should be focused on savings by: Not leaving electricity on when leaving your room; Do not waste water; Do not waste food (only dish what you are able to eat) Keep the buildings and contents clean. 1.3 No pets are allowed in the hostel; 1.4 Vandalism has no place in our society and will not be tolerated. Any breakage should be reported to the Hostel Superintendent immediately to prevent treating the matter as a serious offence. 2. CORRIDORS AND SLEEPING QUARTERS Corridors and sleeping quarters (with identity) could contribute to the hostel spirit and could make learners proud to be part of it). 2.1 It is most important to keep the corridors and sleeping quarters clean and tidy at all times. Cupboards should be kept locked and dustbins should be emptied daily in the containers provided in the corridor. 2.2 Sleeping quarters are not to be utilized as storerooms. The only furniture allowed will be a bed, desk for study with a lamp, dustbin and chair. (Nothing else than this). 2.3 Only normal portable radios/cd players, shavers and hairdryers will be allowed (safe to say that it is kept locked and not lying around in your rooms). No hi-fi s, video machines or heaters will be allowed. 2.4 You will be allowed to make coffee/tea in your rooms, provided that it is kept clean and tidy in your cupboards. 2.5 General inspections will be implemented and should be adhered to Morning inspection before quiet time; In the evenings the period between supper and study time 21H30. No learner could study effectively in a messy environment. 1

2 2.6 No study time in rooms will be allowed after the first session for Grade 8 & 9 learners. Should you not be finished the study hall must be used. (AFTER THE FIRST SESSION THERE SHOULD BE SILENCE IN THE QUARTERS OF THE GRADE 8 & 9 LEARNERS WHICH MEANS SLEEPING TIME.) 2.7 Learners are only allowed to sleep in their own beds in their own rooms. Mattresses may not be moved and learners may not sleep in each others rooms. 3. BATHROOMS The bathrooms should be kept clean and tidy at all times and no water should be wasted. Do not leave taps open or lights on and keep shower and bath times to a realistic time. 4. STUDY HALL 4.1 A learner whom qualifies will be allowed to study in their rooms. (It should be kept in mind that it stays a privilege and only the principal selects these learners according to criteria determined by acceptable academic norms and standards). 4.2 Should a learner misuse the privilege to study in his/her room he/she will be moved back to the study hall. The position of this learner will then be reconsidered during a formal hostel meeting should the learner deserves it. 4.3 All books, school bags, study accessories etc must be in the study hall when study commences. No one may walk around or borrow books etc from other learners. Before a learner will be allowed to study in his/her room, he/she should be in possession of an acceptable study light. 5. DINING ROOM AND KITCHEN 5.1 ALL LEARNERS will attend all meals. Important announcements are made during meals. All learners will be dressed neatly and boys should tuck in their shirts. No carelessness will be allowed. 5.2 Learners who stay in the hostel over weekends should book meals from Friday afternoon until Monday morning. 5.3 It is good manners to keep all conversation at tables orderly and sober. 5.4 Each table s learners are responsible for cleaning the table and placement of the chairs in a neat manner. 5.5 No furniture, food or glassware may be taken from the kitchen or dining room. 5.6 Cleaning of tables should be in sequence. 5.7 No learner will be allowed to leave the dining room before the service personnel adjourn him or her. 2

3 6. WEEKENDS 6.1 It is essential that all learners should go home every weekend. The only learners allowed in the hostel over weekends will be those who: Have been grounded; Have sport or should attend a sports meeting; Have to attend to practical service. 6.2 Learners coming back on Sundays should be in the hostel no later than 19H30. Should there be a problem suitable arrangements must be made with the personnel on duty. 6.3 All rules for the signing out procedures should be followed promptly. 7. LEAVE TIME DURING WEEKDAYS 7.1 No learner will be allowed to leave the school s premises without written permission from the hostel superintendent or personnel on duty. 7.2 Wednesday (where possible) is town day. All signing out procedures will be followed. 7.3 No learner will be allowed to travel to town with another learner or other persons. 8. LAUNDRY 8.1 Learners are allowed to hand in their laundry twice a week Sunday afternoons for Monday mornings and Wednesday afternoons for Thursday morning. 8.2 All laundry lists should be completed in full and handed in timelessly. 8.3 All clothes should be marked properly. 9. VISITATION BY FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS 9.1 We have two lounges for the purpose of visitors. No visitation will be allowed in any other place than the provided lounges. 9.2 No friends from town will be allowed during weekdays. 9.3 Prior arrangements should be made with the hostel superintendent or personnel on duty should a learner wish to have friends visiting over weekends. All visitors should be reported to the personnel on duty. 9.4 Keep the lounges clean and tidy at all times to allow other learners to receive their guests. 10. SICKNESS 10.1 All learners not feeling well should report to the matron and personnel on duty Should a learner be kept in bed, the sick room should be utilized for it. No learner kept in bed will be allowed to walk around inside or outside the hostel premises, will not be allowed to attend any practical service, attend sport events, attend sport practice and will not be allowed to go to town except if he/she has a doctor s appointment. 3

4 10.3 Should a learner get hurt it should be reported to the personnel on duty immediately No visitors will be allowed in the sick room except for duty personnel or parents Should no learner be in the sick room it should be kept locked at all times. 11. TELEPHONES 11.1 NO CALLS will be allowed during study or prayer times. ALL CELLPHONES WILL BE SWITCHED OFF DURING THIS TIMES No cell phone will be allowed during school times or class periods Should the above two points not be honored and is an ongoing offence, your cell phone will be confiscated and kept until the end of the term No crowds are allowed at the public phones. 12. CHURCH 12.1 Should a learner be staying in the hostel over a weekend it is compulsory that he/she attends a church service Confirmation classes will be offered at school as per arrangement with the various churches Should a learner wish to attend a night service with his parents it should be arranged with the personnel on duty beforehand Quiet times in the mornings and afternoons should be kept and respected at all times. 13. BREAKAGE 13.1 Should a learner vandalize or break anything it should be replaced immediately and the costs should be borne by the learner IT IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE TO NOTE THAT NO VANDALISM WILL BE ALLOWED AND A LEARNER MAKING HIMSELF GUILTY OF SUCH AN OFFENCE WILL BE EVICTED FROM THE HOSTEL IMMEDIATELY. 14. TV AND RECREATION ROOM 14.1 No duvets, blankets or mattresses will be allowed; 14.2 After the lights out sign no learner will be allowed to watch television; 14.3 No pornographic or oculist material/videos/dvd s will be allowed on the premises All lights will be switched on whilst learners are present in the facilities. 15. DRESS AFTER SCHOOLHOURS All learners will be dressed properly, tastefully and neatly at all times. Pajamas, slippers or boxers may not be worn outside the dormitories at any times. 4

DURING EXAMINATIONS 16.1 All school regulations still apply No learner will be allowed to visit another learner during the week, even if they are not writing exams Learners are only allowed to go to their parental homes on off days, after the signing procedures has been followed and suitable arrangements were made with the Hostel Superintendent, as well as the personnel on duty. 17. FINAL EXAMINATION FOR GRADE 12 LEARNERS 17.1 All school- and hostel regulations still apply Learners will write their examinations in school uniform The night before exams are written, learners must report to their hostel no later than 18H To obtain study leave is not a right but a privilege! There will be yearly discussions between the principal and educators in regards to this matter No vehicles will be kept on the school s premises by any learner with the written permission of the principal 18. SCHOOL- AND HOSTEL ATTENDANCE 18.1 Permission to be excused will only be granted if the parent / guardian has arranged same with the headmaster All learners leaving the school premises must be collected at reception In the case of sickness, the following procedures must be followed: In the case of absence of a learner without permission, they must provide a letter from the parent / guardian on the first day back For any absence during examination or tests a medical certificate must be handed in to the office All medical- or any other appointments must as far as possible be arranged for the afternoon. TAKE NOTE: The school will make ordinary doctors appointment. Parents / Guardians must please not make appointments on behalf of the learners as they do not know the school s daily routine. 5

6 19. SCHOOL- AND HOSTEL FEES 19.1 It is a requirement that it must be paid on time Should a cheque be dishonored once, only cash will accepted and a fine of R 50 will be payable In the case of a learner leaving the school or hostel in the middle of the month, costs will be calculated at R 30 per day No discount will be given in the case of a learner sleeping out during examination. 20. PRACTICAL 20.1 All learners are obliged to attend practical classes Should a learner not be able to attend a practical class due to an acceptable reason, he / she is obliged to excuse himself / herself at the relevant personnel on duty and find someone to go in their place Learners are on duty certain weekends. In the event that they want to exchange their duty, they must make arrangements with the relevant personnel on duty and are responsible to find a replacement to take their place A senior learner cannot exchange his duties with a junior learner Learners may attend to their errands in old clothes, but must still display neatness Schedules will always be available to the learners as to enable them to see when they are on duty The learners must wear shoes at the practical Shooting of fireworks are forbidden; and hitting with whips on and around the school premises will not be allowed.
