1 University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust East Midlands Children s Integrated Cancer Service (CICS) An integrated service for the investigation of children and young people with suspected cancer and the treatment of those diagnosed with cancer. Our Vision All children and young people with cancer/suspected cancer and their families will have: access to high quality, safe and effective clinical care including emotional and practical support and well co-ordinated care provided in friendly environments that are helpful to healing and as close as to home as possible.
2 Welcome... Children and young people What you can expect Children and young people rarely develop cancer and most of these are treatable.. If your doctor thinks cancer may be the reason for you / your child being unwell, a team of professionals will guide you through the right tests. The team has experts in the Children s Hospitals in Nottingham (Queens Medical Centre) and Leicester (Leicester Royal Infirmary). We work closely with local hospitals and community teams and other specialist services throughout the East Midlands. Your doctor will contact the CICS team who will direct you to either Nottingham or Leicester depending on which tests are required. You / your child may need to be admitted to undergo these tests or will be asked to attend hospital during the day for tests and appointments. We will explain what the tests involve and tell you the results as soon as possible. Sometimes it can take several days, even a few weeks, before it is clear exactly what is wrong. lease ask the nurse or doctor caring for you / your child if you have any questions at any time. The way we work We work in teams across the East Midlands to look at your results and make sure the right treatment is recommended. If you / your child is found not to have cancer we will let your G know or put you in touch with the right services. If you / your child is diagnosed with cancer we will take time to talk you through what this means and plans for treatment. We work with teams around the UK and the world to develop the most suitable treatments for your condition. Often we give you the opportunity to take part in national or international trials for life saving or life prolonging treatment or drugs. We will provide additional information on all these aspects at that everything you need to know and will assign a key worker (paediatric oncology outreach nurse) who will help to guide you through the treatment. In line with national guidance we endeavour to provide you with the highest quality care as close as possible to your home. Due to the rarity of childhood cancer and the complexity of its treatment some treatments are only available in certain hospitals and we will discuss the most suitable option for you as soon as it is clear what your / your child s treatment will involve.

6 Accommodation on the wards We do encourage one parent or guardian to stay with each child at all times. One parent or guardian is welcome to sleep on a camp bed next to their child s bed. Our Values The core values of CICS and its partners are to work as an effective team to provide the best family-centred care. Visitors are always welcome on the wards. There are no strict visiting hours. However, a relaxed and calm atmosphere is created in the evening by turning down the ward lights at pm. We therefore ask that you restrict your visitors after 8pm. Brothers and sisters are welcome onto the ward too, but must be supervised by an adult at all times. Billy s House is a home from home for families of children with cancer made possible by a major fund raising effort led by parents. It is run by CLIC Sargent and is offered to all families making long journeys (more than 45 minutes) when their child is having treatment. Billy s House offers selfcatering accommodation close to the hospital. If your child is well enough then they may stay there too. There are six bedrooms, some with en-suite facilities, and all have bed linen provided. There are two kitchens, a number of washing machines, tumble driers and irons as well as a seating area, teenagers room, TV s, books and indoor and outdoor play facilities. Siblings, grandparents and friends are welcome to stay at the home providing there is a spare bed available in the family s room. The home is run on a daily needs basis so rooms may not be pre-booked. All referrals for use of this service are made directly through the CLIC Sargent team. lease ask a member of the ward team for further information. Billy s House (Nottingham) In line with these values, the following principles will guide us: Our aim is to provide high quality clinical care as well as emotional and practical support to children and their families. We will offer children /young people and their families the opportunity to take part in appropriate clinical trials. We will actively participate in or contribute to a range of laboratory and clinical research projects that aim to improve the outcome for children/ young people and their families in the future. We will provide family-centred care. Our services and care will be age appropriate. We will always talk to children/young people and their families to ensure that we are all in agreement about decisions made. We will identify and meet the needs of the individual child/young person and family. We recognise that this can be a difficult time for children/young person and their families. We will develop ways to reduce distress for our patients and their families wherever possible. We will work with community care providers to optimise services for the care of children/young people;e and their families. We recognise and support our staff and help them gain the skills and support they need to enable them to offer the best care for children/young people and their families.
