2 What is the Multi- Disciplinary Team (MDT)? This leaflet provides information about the Gynaecological Oncology MDT. An MDT is a team of professionals who are involved in your care at various stages from diagnosis to treatment. The team consists of numbers of experts in different area who have specialist training and experience in caring for women with gynaecological cancers. They are able to provide you with the treatment options that are most effective in treating your cancer, if diagnosed. The MDT meeting is held weekly. A wide variety of cancer specialists are present at the meeting and we aim to come to a collective decision about the best way to proceed with your treatment. In some cases, it will be more appropriate to refer you to a specialist team at the Christie and we will advise you of this at your clinic appointment. We will notify you and your GP as soon as possible after the meeting. Members of the MDT Consultant Gynaecological Oncology Surgeon As part of your cancer treatment you may require surgery. The surgeon is a specialist who can perform the type of surgery to remove the cancer. Consultant Gynaecological Surgeon This surgeon is able to assess and treat some gynaecological cancers. The surgeon will discuss your condition with you and the different treatment options. It may be necessary for your treatment to be performed by a special cancer surgeon at the Christie hospital. The surgeon will make that referral. Consultant Oncologists Consultant Clinical Oncologist radiotherapy for different type of cancer but may also experience in chemotherapy. This treatment may be either following surgery or the only form of treatment required. Consultant Medical Oncologist chemotherapy and hormone therapy. This treatment may be either following or before surgery. Consultant Histopathologist examining cells/tissue under a microscope to diagnose disease and confirm the diagnosis of cancer. Consultant Radiologist interpreting CT, MR and special scan results and also carry out other diagnostic tests used to investigate your disease. MDT Coordinator This is an essential member of the team who ensures that all your investigations and results are available for the MDT meeting. The Gynaecological Clinical Nurse Specialist Known as your Key Worker, this nurse specialist s main role is to help women and their families to understand and cope with a suspected, new or recurrent diagnosis of gynaecological cancer. Being investigated for possible cancer or having a confirmed diagnosis of cancer can lead to feelings of shock, fear and bewilderment. A diagnosis may often come with a great deal of new information and it can be difficult to take it all in and remember everything you are told at your hospital visit. For this reason, your key worker will act as your point of contact and will provide written and verbal information, advice and 1 2
3 support during your time in hospital and via telephone after discharge from hospital. How do I contact the gynaecology specialist nurse (CNS) or the team? The CNS working hours are Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm. Gynaecology doctor/team via switchboard There is always an answering machine to leave your message. Your call will receive a response, although sometimes this may not be the same day. If you need help or advice at other times, you can contact: l l GP Emergency Department Your Key Worker will work with you in the following ways: l will be the central point of contact l will assess your needs and ensure that you receive the care you need and that you are involved as in decision about your care as much as possible l will ensure that you are referred to and receive different services as needed If you are currently receiving treatment at the Christie and have a medical emergency out of hours and need to speak to someone, please contact your GP out of hours service, or go to your local A&E or ring the emergency contact number given to you by your CNS. (This will depend on the treatment you are currently receiving). Name of Key Worker : Holistic Needs Assessment (HNA) We know that having investigations, treatment and cancer diagnosis can affect your quality of life in different ways. Holistic Needs Assessment (HNA) will involve questions relating to your general wellbeing, social situation and support network. It will also help to identify any particular issues or concerns you may have, to ensure we are offering you the most appropriate care plan and support.
