atient Information Service Bristol Heart Institute Visitors to the Coronary Care Unit Respecting everyone Embracing change Recognising success Working together Our hospitals.
Welcome to the BRI We hope this leaflet will answer some of your questions and make your visit to your relative or friend easier. Welcome to the Coronary Care Unit The Coronary Care unit (CCU) is located on level 6 of the Bristol Heart Institute (BHI). This can be accessed by the corridor on level 5 of the main Queens building in the BRI Telephone: direct line to ward Visiting times: 2.00pm pm and 6.30pm pm Due to the nature of this unit you may be asked to wait outside at any time. What can I expect when visiting the Coronary Care Unit? CCU is a nine bedded unit that cares for people with a range of heart conditions. When visiting the unit you may see your friend or relative connected to a heart monitor. They may also be connected to a drip. 2
Can I telephone the hospital for information? Yes. The CCU doctors round is usually between 8.30am to 9.30am so it is useful to ring after this time. There may be many friends and family who want news of the patient so it would be helpful if you could choose one spokesperson to make the call on behalf of everyone else. How can I get detailed information? In order to maintain confidentiality the ward nurse will be unable to give you detailed information about your friend or relative s condition over the telephone. They will be able to talk to you more fully when you visit. You may also want to see the doctor and this will usually be possible to arrange if you ask the nurse. Where can I park? The closest car parks are located at Level four on Marlborough Hill, and Level five next to the Oncology centre. There is also a pay and display car park located on Trenchard Street. Details are available on the ward of the Hospital Free Bus service. This runs between the city centre, car parks, bus station and the BRI. 3
What should I bring? Toiletries and change of underwear/nightclothes. Light reading - newspapers and magazines. Small change for telephone/papers. Fruit and drinks if appropriate - check with the nursing staff. lease do not bring in any other food. We cannot offer to store food, re-heat it or keep it in a fridge. Where will I find refreshments? The WRVS has a number of shops and kiosks where visitors can get refreshments: Level 5 Atrium in BHI Queen s Building - Level 2 WRVS Coffee Shop Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6pm Saturday closed. Sunday 2.00pm pm WRVS Shop 7am to 7pm Monday - Friday 11am to 4pm Weekend 4
Important points for visitors lease Use Alcohol hand gel when entering and leaving the unit. Do not visit if you have had any symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting. Tell staff you are a visitor. Do not bring children under the age of 11 to visit. Do not use the patients toilet. There are toilets for public use on level 6 and level 5 of the BHI. No smoking Anywhere on the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust site. lease do not use mobile phones on the unit as this can disturb the other patients and possibly interfere with medical equipment. 5
