1 University of Southern Indiana College of Nursing & Health Professions L ea r n in g Ca r in g Co mmu n it y Volume 15, No, 3 March 2007 Dr. Nadine Coudret, Dean Diane Utley, Editor Jennie Hiam named Indiana Nurse Practitioner of the Year ennie Hiam, clinical coordinator for the Family Nurse Practitioner program at USI, has been named Nurse Practitioner of the Year by the Indiana Chapter of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Mrs. Hiam has been a licensed family nurse practitioner since She came to the University of Southern Indiana in According to a colleague, she is well-liked, well-respected, and is a very familiar face in the health care community. She teaches a graduate nursing class and is involved in several other graduate courses; she has been instrumental in the development of the FNP program at USI. Mrs. Hiam has helped to develop a number of clinical sites for undergraduate nursing students. When she is not on campus, she is speaking to youth at an area school, seeing inmates at Vanderburgh County jail through the CNHP Jail Grant, or volunteering at the ECHO Community Health Center. Over the last ten years, Mrs. Hiam was chosen Volunteer of the Year by the Red Cross, YMCA, and United Way. She is considered a dear friend and a mentor to both faculty and students. Our heartfelt congratulations! ANNUAL HONORS CONVOCATION SET FOR MARCH 19 The College of Nursing and Health Professions and University Division Honors Convocation will be held on March 19 at 4:00 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium. Nearly two hundred students will be honored and awarded scholarships and grants from eighty presenters. Family members, friends, and staff are invited to share in this momentous occasion for these students. A punch and cookie reception will be held immediately following the program in the vestibule of the Health Professions Center. Student Government Association Sponsors CN HP Town Hall March 13 and March 15 Dr. Nadine Coudret, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions, will host an open student forum at 12:30 p.m in the Student-Faculty Interaction Room (HP 0110) on Tuesday, March 13 and again at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 15 in the same location. Dr. Coudret will present a brief update on current and future programs in the college. The major portion of the forum will be used for students to ask questions and offer comments on college programs and initiatives. Pizza will be served.
2 FACULTY A N D STA FF N EWS Tenure Awarded to Three Faculty Dr. Beth Johnson, Nursing, Dr. Martha Sparks, Nursing, and Dr. Kevin Valadares, Health Services Program Director, have been granted tenure by the University of Southern Indiana. Dr. Valadares has also been promoted to associate professor. Dr. Sparks Dr. Valadares Dr. Johnson Jennifer Bartek Honored Jennifer Bartek, instructor in Dental Hygiene/Dental Assisting, has been selected as the Bower-Suhrheinrich College of Education and Human Services Outstanding Graduate Student in Secondary Education for Ms. Bartek will be recognized at the College Honors Convocation on March 22, FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP Mary Ann Wehmer, nursing has been selected to write a chapter in Fundamental of Nursing, 7th edition, textbook to be published in She also has written an article on perioperative hypothermia for the January issue of OR Nurse Manager, a nursing journal. Dane, Jake, and Cole Wilson at Jake s first wrestling match (first school sponsored wrestling match, that is). These are the sons of Amy Wilson, Imaging Sciences faculty. Spring s the thing! Stephanie Ziliak, along with Kim Orth, students in Gale Hoehn s N465 Chronic Nursing class, demonstrate proper hand washing and care to USI elementary education students who are about to begin student teaching for grades 3-6. Marlene Olsthoorn, mother of Sara Olsthoorn, nursing student, died on Sunday, February 25, following a 10 year battle with cancer. We extend sympathy to Sara and her family.
3 Student News CNHP Nursing Students Win Scholarships Natalie Whitehead, Jennifer Hight, Rachel Scheu and Emily Abaray, nursing students, have been named recipients of Deaconess Foundation Nursing Scholarships. Larry Pile, director of human resources for Deaconess Hospital, wrote that these students exemplify the character, patient dedication, and commitment necessary to sustain Deaconess leadership role in tri-state health care. Jessica L. Elpers, graduating senior in Radiologic and Imaging Sciences, has been accepted at St. Louis University for the fall semester. Jessica will be seeking a Master s degree in Medical Science with a concentration in physicians assistant studies. A native of Haubstadt IN, Jessica has attended USI and has maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout her four years here. Congratulations, Jessica! Respiratory Care students are planning a very busy spring. They will be participating in two health fairs; their booth seeks to inform attendees about the hazards of smoking and to offer smoking cessation options. The health fairs will be conducted in April at PPG and the Vanderburgh County Safe House. Six Respiratory Care students will be participating in the Asthma Day Camp at Delaware School March RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE There is a collection box for aluminum drink can tops in the kitchen areas of the Student Interaction Room, HP The can tops will be contributed to the Ronald McDonald House at Riley Children s Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. March is the third month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and one of seven Gregorian months with the length of 31 days. In ancient Rome, March was called Martius, so named after Mars, the Roman god of war. Students from the Food and Nutrition Club spent Sunday afternoon decorating a display case on the first floor of CNHP. STUDENT FUNDRAISERS Occupational Therapy Assistant students are raising funds for attendance at the SOTA Conference in St. Louis in April. They are selling Peelers, a $10.00 coupon card for use in many local restaurants. See Susan Ahmad, program director, to purchase a card for McDonalds and Papa John s Pizza; a variety card is also available. Dental Assisting students are selling McBloom s Garden Therapy hand lotion and lip balm in a variety of sizes and prices. Students will be using the funds to defer costs of a trip to the Dental Theatre in Saint Louis, Missouri. Dental Hygiene students are selling Sprinkle s Celestial Candles in an array of wintry fragances Macintosh Apple, Caramel Apple, Banana Nut Bread, Sugar Cookie, and Snickerdoodle. Celestial Candles cost $8.00 and are available in the Dental Clinic and at Kim Shelton s desk. in HP 2068.
