NURS 312 (theory component) -Mental Health Nursing Practice Introduces the theory and concepts of mental health nursing and examines the role of the mental health nurse in northern nursing practice settings. Attention is given to historical, current and projected trends with a focus on the unique concerns of the north. Prerequisites: must be in 3 rd or 4 th year NURS 315 (practice component) - This course provides an opportunity for students to integrate concepts and theory related to mental health as they care for individual and family clients in a variety of acute and community settings. Working with families and groups that support individuals dealing with specific mental health conditions is highlighted. Co requisites: NURS 312 NURS 4130 Professional Growth: Research (Douglas College Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree Program, 4 th year) [3 hours lecture/classroom weekly] Role: Instructed and continued to refine development of second and subsequent offering of course. Added WebCT online communication and student support resources to run contemporaneously with classroom instruction in supporting student learning and engagement. Redeveloped course material. Enrolment: 60 per term (2 sections of 30 students) NURS 4130 Professional Growth: Research (2 credits) The intent of this course is to enhance participants' abilities to comprehend, critique, and utilize nursing research. Participants critically reflect on various research methodologies. Participants experience ways to critically examine their practice in relation to nursing research and to pose researchable questions to inform evidence-based practice. Prerequisites: ENGL NURS 2300 PNUR4575 Psychiatric Nursing Research (Douglas College Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing Degree Program, 4 th year) [13 week online course offering] Role: Responsible for content development and presentation/instruction of course in online format for students across Canada. Developed the first research course offered in the Psychiatric Nursing program at Douglas College following curriculum approved by CRNBC. Enrolment: per term. PNUR 4575 Psychiatric Nursing Research (3.0 credits) Students will begin to understand and critique psychiatric nursing research in such a way as to begin to demonstrate the ability to integrate research and practice from an evidenced based paradigm. In addition, students will develop a beginning understanding of the various research methodologies used in conducting research which informs evidenced based psychiatric nursing practice. Responsible for supervising students in praxis seminars and clinical placements where students are conducting change projects with various community and health agencies. Serve as faculty contact for agency personnel participating with students in various projects. Enrolment: per term. NURS 4100 Nursing Practice VII (4.5 credits) This nursing practice experience provides opportunities for participants to engage in influencing change for the promotion of societal health within the Canadian health care system. The nursing practice experience focuses on participants' growth in their practice as professional nurses. The philosophy, theoretical foundations and the foundational concepts of the program are explored. The history of nursing, including a gendered analysis of the profession is examined. The role of the nurse in the health care system is emphasized, as is the relationship among theory, practice and research. Participants are introduced to the process of critical thinking, critical reflection, and critical writing.
