The role specialties are nurse administrator, nurse educator, and family nurse practitioner. Clinical specialties are adult and family. In addition, the School of Nursing offers the gerontological and psychiatric mental health (adult and family) nurse practitioner programs of study through the Mississippi Education Consortium for Specialized Advanced Practice Nursing (MECSAPN). MISSION The mission of the Delta State University School of Nursing is to prepare students for professional nursing practice in a multicultural society as either a generalist at the Baccalaureate level or in an advanced practice role at the Master s level. The program will prepare graduates to pursue advanced study. ACCREDITATION Delta State University School of Nursing is accredited by The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Smith School of Nursing Delta State University Master of Science in Nursing Program ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Students considered for Full Admission to the Graduate Program in the School of Nursing must meet the following requirements by April 1st for fall admission: A. Apply to Delta State University Graduate School and meet admission requirements as outlined in the Delta State University Graduate Bulletin. B. Meet admission requirements to the Robert E. Smith School of Nursing Graduate Program as follows: Baccalaureate degree in Nursing with a minimum GPA of.00 overall. A combined verbal and quantitative score 800 and analytic score of.5 on the Graduate Record Exam. A grade of C or better on an introductory course in statistics. At least two years of continuous clinical nursing experience as a Registered Nurse for Nurse Administrator and Nurse Educator. At least two years of continuous clinical nursing experience with patient contact as an RN within the past five years for Nurse Practitioner. Completion of School of Nursing Master of Science in Nursing Program Application. Completion of written mission statement as noted in the School of Nursing Master of Science in Nursing Program Application. A copy of current licensure or privilege to practice nursing as a Registered Nurse in Mississippi. Individuals who hold a restricted license may or may not be eligible for admission. Three letters of professional/academic reference. At least one reference must be academic in nature. Completion of an interview with School of Nursing faculty prior to admission (application packet must be complete before an interview is scheduled). A grade of C or higher on a graduate level pathophysiology course (applies only to nurse practitioner and educator tracks). After being accepted for admission, each student will be required to submit a completed health and immunization form provided by the School of Nursing, evidence of personal health insurance and malpractice insurance, and CPR certification (infant, child, adult) on the MSN orientation date. Applicants must comply with Mississippi legislative statues and regulations regarding criminal background checks by having fingerprints taken at an approved health care agency (not a police or sheriff s department) and a criminal background check completed. Any cost of this requirement will be the student s responsibility. Applicants who want to receive credit for prior nursing course(s) from another program must submit a request and credit be negotiated before admission to the School of Nursing and not after the student is enrolled. All students must have computer and Internet access. NON-DEGREE SEEKING STUDENTS Enrollment in the following courses as a non-degree seeking student is allowed prior to full admission: NUR 601 Advanced Theoretical Issues in Nursing and Ethics NUR 60 Advanced Pathophysiology NUR 604 Advanced Health Care Policy and Politics NUR 607 Instructional Methodologies. Upon acceptance into the Master s program, these courses could apply toward completion of degree requirements needed to complete the Master of Science in Nursing Degree. 10/19/009

Smith School of Nursing Delta State University Master of Science in Nursing Program Gerontological Nurse Practitioner (GNP) Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) These Track Options are offered through the Mississippi Education Consortium for Specialized Advanced Practice Nursing (MECSAPN). The mission of the MECSAPN is to serve the needs of the vulnerable populations for specialized healthcare by: providing advanced practice nursing leaders to improve access to quality health care and reduce health disparities in vulnerable populations; and, optimize access to specialized education for advanced nursing practice leaders. Graduates of this program are prepared to take the Gerontological Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (adult or family) certification exam and to function as an advanced practice nurse upon successful completion of the exam. The aim of the MECSAPN is to provide an innovative, collaborative model of advanced specialized nursing education in Mississippi.
