Fall 2018 Wegmans School of Nursing Junior Clinical (J2) Newsletter Information and announcements in this newsletter will guide you as you begin the next academic year. Please read carefully and save the newsletter for reference. Annual Clinical Compliance Requirements New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Students are required to submit the SJFC health history and physical exam (HPE) form, immunization history, PPD and CPR certification at least 6 weeks before the semester starts so documentation required by each agency can be completed before the semester starts. All compliance requirements must be current before the start of clinical and not reach the yearly expiration until after the semester is completed. All required dates and documentation must be uploaded by the student and verified through the Wellness Center Patient Portal. This is a new process starting April Keep the paper copies for your own records do not send paper copies to the WSON or the Health and Wellness Center. If you are starting the clinical program in the fall semester, documents must be uploaded to the Patient Portal before July 15; for a spring start in the clinical program or spring graduate clinical, documents must be uploaded by November 15.
Required NYSDOH documents for all students in all programs: All dates and supporting documents are entered on the Patient Portal by the student. Physical Examination: Before starting the first clinical semester (junior clinical year for UG students), students must have a history and physical examination (HPE) completed by a health care provider dated no more than 6 months prior to the semester start date, giving clearance for full participation for nursing clinical training. After the first clinical year, an annual health update that is completed by the student must be submitted (no provider visit or signature required: Health Update form is available on the nursing website). If you are employed in a clinical setting, you may use the health update form completed for your employer to indicate you continue to meet health requirements for clinical work. Enter the date and upload the HPE form to the Patient Portal. Latex allergy: Indicate on the HPE form if you are allergic to latex. CPR Certification: Complete the American Heart Association* (Basic Life Support) OR American Red Cross (CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers) for this requirement. Students with Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) must complete Basic Life Support (BLS) to meet this requirement. Check your CPR card for the expiration date. Most are good for two years but some require yearly recertification. Enter the date of your certification and upload a copy of your card to the Patient Portal and keep the original. * If you plan on working at the URMC either as a PCT or a nurse later on, they ONLY accept American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification. Tuberculin Skin test (PPD) must be done annually. Documentation is a two-step process and must include the date given and the date the PPD was read (48 72 hours later). For students with a positive PPD, documentation of treatment OR chest x-ray report must be uploaded to the Patient Portal. 2
Immunizations: Students must submit immunization records (including titers if needed) for measles, mumps, rubella, and Hepatitis B. If a student has not received the full course of the Hepatitis B vaccine, proof of the first administration or a positive titer must be provided. The college must also have a proof of meningitis vaccine within the past 5 years for any student who lives on campus. Commuters can waive this requirement and complete the meningitis waiver form. This form is on line and can be completed in the patient portal. Chicken pox (Varicella): Student must enter whether they had the chicken pox (disease) and the date or the date of the Varicella vaccination in the Patient Portal. Annual Flu shot: Get the seasonal flu shot in the fall when the updated serum is available, usually after August 1 st. If you are starting clinical in the fall, get the flu shot by Oct. 15. You will be ed dates of the fall flu clinics on campus. Clinical Compliance Documentation Instructions Enter the dates for each required compliance item and upload the supporting documents in the Patient Portal. Have the documents available and ready to upload. Use the link: go.sjfc.edu/patientportal or go to the Wellness Center web page and use the Patient Portal. Step #1: Before you access the Patient Portal: Scan and save your documents individually to your computer or take a picture of each document with your smart phone. If you are uploading multiple documents, you will need to scan/take a picture and save each page of each document as a separate file. After you scan or take a picture of your document(s) please check for clarity. Documents must be:.txt,.pdf.gif,.png,.tiff,.jpg, or.jpeg. File must be smaller than 4 MB. (Too big? Scan in black and white, or at a setting of 150 DPI to achieve a smaller file). Please make sure that your file name consists of only alpha and numeric characters in the file name. No extra spaces are permitted. For additional detailed information go to health-and-wellness-center/documents/patientportalinstructions.pdf 3
Getting Organized for the Semester WSON Nursing Student Handbook You are responsible for knowing the information and policies articulated in the Nursing Student Handbook and the undergraduate specific information. The link to this handbook is located on our website at handbooks/nursinghandbook.pdf Review the current Handbook ( ) prior to starting classes on 9/4/18; the handbook is posted in August. St. John Fisher College & WSON Mail Folders Remember to check both your SJFC account and mail folder that is located in the Undergraduate Learning Resource Center (WSON 208) on a daily basis during the semester. The faculty use these methods to communicate with students, return papers, assignments, and clinical work. Blackboard Course Management System Another important communication link is the course management system known as Blackboard (Bb). To access Bb you must have an SJFC network account (your ). Check each of your nursing classes on Bb prior to the beginning of the semester for updates on room assignments, special schedules, course syllabi, reading assignments, course materials, etc. During the semester, faculty will post a variety of documents on Bb that you will need: PowerPoint notes, class outlines, clinical documentation forms, as well as reminders for class preparation. You should check Bb daily for class and clinical announcements and updates. You are automatically registered in Bb when you register with the College. You are automatically added to or dropped from Bb courses as your registration status changes. Use the username and password you use for your SJFC to login to Bb. Link to Bb by going to the mysjfc portal and click on Some faculty make their course active in Blackboard a week or two before the semester starts. Do not panic if a course does not show up on your class list in Bb until the start of the semester. You should print the course syllabus from Bb and bring it to the first day of class. Get started on time management and enter your course schedule, assignments, tests, projects, etc. into your calendar! 4
Getting Organized for the Semester continued... iclicker This should have been purchased during your J1 semester as a required resource throughout the undergraduate nursing program. The Wegmans School of Nursing (WSON) faculty use IClicker for interactive exercises in the classroom. Faculty integrate IClicker questions in media used in classroom presentations, such as PowerPoint lecture slides, for student assessment and opinion polling. Students select a response to the question posed on the PowerPoint slide using their own personal media device (e.g., Smartphone, tablet, laptop, or computer). Group feedback is instantly collated and displayed on the PowerPoint slide with graphs. All undergraduate nursing students are required to purchase a license for IClicker and add IClicker to their device (s) for class use: macmillan.force.com/iclicker/s/iclicker-reef-students. For some classes student participation in IClicker is part of the course grade. You should have purchased IClicker in your J1 semester that covered 2 years. If you did not, you will need to purchase an additional 2 year IClicker license through the SJFC Bookstore to download the software to your device(s). The approximate costs for the license subscription for those that DID NOT purchase a 2 year subscription for the J1 semester is approximately $32.99 for 2 years. If you do not own a personal media device, you can purchase an iclicker device with the license at the SJFC Bookstore. There is an additional cost for the iclicker device. You must register your IClicker license through Blackboard as instructed by your course faculty. 5
Wegmans School of Nursing- ExamSoft and Required Technology The Wegmans School of Nursing administers student examinations through online testing software and requires all incoming students to have a laptop. The WSON utilizes a computer-based exam system, ExamSoft. The latest version of ExamSoft software is Examplify and should be downloaded well before the first exam. It is important to have the most updated version. Laptops must meet the specifications outlined by Exam- Soft. Windows-based computers are recommended for improved testing software compatibility. Please visit the ExamSoft website for current information on minimum PC/ Mac device requirements. Windows -- Minimum-System-Requirements-for-Windows Macintosh -- It is the student s responsibility to keep his/her computer in good working condition. It must be fully charged prior to testing using ExamSoft. As well, students may consider having a back-up second battery for the device during testing. Please note that all testing conducted through ExamSoft will be subject to the Policies and Procedures outlined in the Nursing Student Handbook. 6
Uniforms The complete Professional Appearance Guidelines are available in the WSON Nursing Student Handbook available at nursing/resources/documents.dot and the guidelines are included at the end of this newsletter. New juniors were mailed information regarding uniform purchase. Students must purchase the uniform top and pants from the SJFC Bookstore. This includes a white top with the Wegmans School of Nursing/SJFC logo embroidered on the sleeve and burgundy uniform pants. The white tops tend to run small, so pay attention to the recommended care instructions. You might want to order a larger size to accommodate any potential shrinkage. Scrub pants, denim, jeans, stretch pants, leggings, sweat pants and shorts are not allowed. Clean white or black shoes with adequate support are to be worn as part of the uniform. These shoes should be dedicated only for clinical use and not for every day wear. The following types of shoes are unacceptable: open-toed shoes, sandals, platforms, clogs, Crocs, canvas or nylon shoes (like Keds). Sneakers are acceptable if they provide good support they should be white (or mostly white) or black and easily wiped clean if contaminated with body fluids. 7
The Wegmans School of Nursing ID consists of a retractable badge holder with an alligator clip and a clear badge holder where you put your SJFC student ID. The badge holder and clip are available for purchase ($10) through Ms. Beverly Deason in the WSON Dean s Suite. Your SJFC student ID has your first and last name, your picture, and the word student on it, which meets the identification requirements for the local hospitals. If you are a new commuter student, you can get your picture ID done at Security at any time (located in Haffey Hall). If you are a resident student staying on campus, your picture ID will be handed out by Residential Life along with your room keys, etc. Required equipment each student needs to start clinical nursing courses: (All are available at the SJFC bookstore, online, uniform shops or medical supply vendors). Stethoscope (Littman or MDF are a good brands; 28 inch tubing; diaphragm and bell capability or high/low frequency with one head; something in the $60-$80 range is adequate). Inexpensive stethoscopes make it difficult to hear! Blood pressure cuff (aneroid gauge; nylon cuff; price range usually $15-$30) Bandage scissors (4 or 6 inch) E-Textbooks Contact the Barnes and Noble bookstore at SJFC for more information on which nursing textbooks are offered electronically, the benefits, cost, etc. Their phone number is Student Resources for Academic Assistance From Professor Tara Sacco I am the faculty advisor for the Fuld Scholars program at the WSON. The Fuld Scholars offer some mentorship in selected courses for your success. I wanted to review available resources and process/expectations with you as you are starting a new semester. 8
Smarthinking Tutoring: is an online tutoring program available to SJFC students, at any time Smarthinking is accessed through the mysjfc portal page - click on. Resources include drop-in tutoring, scheduled tutoring (nursing topics include pharmacology, med-surg, OB, peds, mental health and others), and offline questioning. This resource is FREE for you to use any time. There is also writing assistance through Smarthinking. ATI and Evolve Resources: There are many resources offered to you, electronically, through both the ATI and Evolve textbook/online resources. Fuld Scholar Mentor Open Group Exam Reviews: The Fuld Scholars will offer open exam reviews for their assigned courses prior to each unit exam. These are open to any student to attend, regardless of how you are performing in the course. Your faculty will post sign-up sheets for these sessions. Keep in mind -- the Fuld Scholars WILL NOT be re-lecturing content NOR will they know what is on the exam. You should come with questions about areas you are struggling with and practice questions you are having difficulty with. The Fuld Scholars will bring resources with them to help with the review and share tips for studying. Fuld Scholar Small Group Mentoring: If after the first exam your course average is 76 or less, your course faculty may refer you to a Fuld Scholar Mentor for small group review sessions. This process is only initiated after a meeting with your course faculty. As with the open group reviews, you should come with questions and identified areas that you are struggling with. The Fuld Scholars WILL NOT be re-lecturing content NOR will they know what is on the exam. College-Based Resources: On campus resources include the Math Center ( and Writing Center ( APA Resources: The required format for writing papers in the School of Nursing is APA as defined by the American Psychological Association. All students are required to purchase the most current Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association to refer to for correct APA formatting. Additional assistance with APA is available through the: 1) Lavery Library, 2) SJFC Writing Center, 3) Smarthinking, and 4) APA writing guide posted on the WSON website Writing Support at: nursing/documents/study-resources/apaexpectationsguide.pdf 9
