Clinical Rotation: Clinical Dates: May 13-15, 20-22, 27-29, June 3-5, 10 Clinical Hours: Clinical Site s: To include: Colonial Vista Care Center, Cashmere Conv. Center, Highline Care Center Course Description: This eight (8) credit course introduces the basic skill and knowledge required for competency as a caregiver. It includes instruction in personal care skills, roles and responsibilities of the nursing assistant, communication skills and safety and emergency procedures. Successful completion of the course allows the student to take the licensure exam under OBRA; fulfilling requirements as set forth by the State of Washington for health care professionals. Nursing 090 meets the requirements as a prerequisite for entry into the Wenatchee Valley College Nursing Program. (Please NOTE: HIV and CPR requirements included in the course must be successfully met prior to clinical rotation.)

2 Required Text: "Nursing Assisting; A Foundation in Caregiving Diana Dugan, RN Hartman Publishing Inc CPR textbooks will be signed out to students. Damage or loss of textbook will result in a $20.00 replacement fee, damage to be determined by instructor. Payment of damage/loss fee is mandatory. Grades will be held until full payment is received. Payment will be made to Rhonda Yenney, Secretary Allied Health. First Aid : You will be required to purchase this textbook at WVC Bookstore in order to receive a First Aid card. The textbook must be purchased at the beginning of the quarter. Course Requirements: Mandatory attendance is required during both theory and clinical portion of the course in order to comply with the requirements set by the State of Washington to meet the expectations for the Nursing Assistant Certified. (Includes being on time, and remaining throughout classroom/clinical hours.) Any absences from the theory/clinical portion of the course will be addressed with instructor, Patti Kyle, RN on an individual basis. Failure to meet this requirement may result in noncompletion of course. Exceptions may include illness. In event of illness or crisis situations a student would be required to contact instructor to correct absence based material at instructor s discretion/supervision. Loss of points: Five (5) points will be taken from overall points for the course (400 points) for each day that the student is absent or more than 30 minutes late during the theory/clinical portion of the course. NOTE: Attendance expectations include: Call AND instructor in a timely manner if you are going to be absent or unable to attend any portion of the class. (Please note and phone contact info in syllabus.) Additional Course Information/Expectations: Close-toed shoes/name tags required while working in the Simulation Lab setting WVC provided lab jackets. The student must wear the WVC provided lab jacket (or individual scrubs ) during all lab learning experiences. A $20.00 fee will be required for any lost or damaged lab jacket damage to be determined by instructor(s). Payment of damage/loss fee is mandatory. Grades will be held until full payment is received. Payment will be made to Rhonda Yenney, Secretary Allied Health. "Journal" type notebook is required for journal assignments. Loose leaf paper will not be accepted. Late written assignments (Journals and Case Study) will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor. Journals turned in late will receive a 50% late penalty, Patient Case Studies will receive a 20% late penalty. Journal assignments/case Study will not be accepted more than one day after assignment is due except at instructor s discretion.

Testing: The student must notify the instructor if s/he will be absent for a quiz or exam. Five percent(5%) of the unit grade will be deducted, per day, for completion of exams or quizzes at a time other than that scheduled at the discretion of the instructor. Testing will be scheduled for the day following the missed exam unless otherwise specified. Quiz Material: In order to demonstrate comprehension/competency in the theory portion of the course, the student must receive a cumulative 80% or higher in all Quizzed material. Students who receive less than 80% will not be allowed to advance into the clinical portion of the course, and would be required to withdraw from course, repeating the course in its entirety if they chose to enroll at another date.

4 NOTE: A compiled score of 80% is required for satisfactory completion of course. It will also be mandatory to receive an 80% score or higher in clinical competency. Quizzes - (25%) Clinical Competency - (25%) 100 points 100 points Written Skills/Personal Learning Skills Case Study" 50 points (25%) Journal 50 points Final Test(s) - (25%) 100 points Theory Final Tuesday May 13, 2014 Clinical/Course Final Thursday June 5, 2014 Grading: A = % A- = 90-93% B+ = 86-89% B = 83-85% B- = 80-82% Clinical Rotation unless otherwise noted! Please refer to clinical rotation dates/time. A more detailed clinical schedule will be given at orientation to clinical site. Clinical Expectations: Your clinical instructor will provide you with one on one guidance and instruction. Clinical competency expectations will be reviewed with you frequently and you will be graded on a daily basis. Your questions are encouraged. Please expect and seek out a positive learning experience during your clinical rotation. Professional conduct while working within your scope of practice is imperative. This will include the following:

5 Mandatory attendance- Clinical rotation: PLEASE READ!! Attendance includes timely attendance and remaining throughout clinical hours. (Please refer to course requirements.) The first unexcused absence will result in a 10% reduction from your clinical grade. A second unexcused absence may result in a failing grade. (Note: An unexcused absence is defined as failing to notify your instructor PRIOR to the start of the clinical day to report: an earlier occurring emergency, illness, or inability to meet clinical expectations.) Calling in appropriately (prior to the start of the clinical day) more than two (2) times during the clinical rotation with personal related issues will result in a 10% reduction from your overall clinical grade. Calling in appropriately is done by calling/ ing instructor and calling and leaving a message at assigned clinical site. Inclement weather related issues will not affect your grade if you have communicated appropriately with your instructor. (See above for appropriate communication)all attendance issues will be addressed with you by your instructor (Patti Kyle, RN) and/or your clinical instructor. Professional appearance/expectations (Clinical rotation): White uniforms (must be washed daily). Sox, and undergarments must be white or neutral colored. Lab jackets are acceptable. No sweatshirt/sweater type or any outer garment is acceptable. Long sleeve/short sleeve solid white knit/cotton T-shirts may be worn under short sleeved uniform top. All T-shirts worn under uniforms must be solid white without any design or print. Hair: Neat, pulled back and away from collar. Beards neatly trimmed Shoes: White, close toed, clog type shoes must have back strap. No open heels/toes. No aeration type openings on shoes. Watch with sweep second hand. Black pen, small note pad. Miscellaneous - No artificial nails. Nails short without polish. No visible tattoos. NO visible body piercing. Student will be requested to cover piercing. One set of stud type earrings only. No necklace, bracelet type jewelry. Please limit fragrance, and makeup. Good personal hygiene/grooming No body odor, with good oral hygiene. Gait belts/transfer belt: - A transfer belt will be assigned to each student for the duration of the clinical rotation. Loss or damage (as determined by instructor(s)) to the transfer belt will result in a $15.00 fee. Payment of damage/loss fee is mandatory. Grades will be held until full payment is received.
