Newsletter EBA PAM, Burn Camp and Prevention committees Autumn 2017 Volume 9 Dear Colleagues, The congress in Barcelona was well attended and it was good to meet many of you! One of the best things about the PAM newsletter that follows the congress is the introduction to the new committee members and the sense of an exciting two years ahead and thoughts of what can be achieved. I N T H I S N E W S L E T T E R PAM news 1 PAM prizes 2 Congress 3 report Of course the downside to new committee members if the fact that some of the old members have left us, this year was no exception and at the Barcelona congress we had to say goodbye to four of our members. All of these people have made an enormous contribution to the work of the PAM committee and they will all be missed by those of us that remain. We would all like to say a goodbye and thank you to Romana, Anna, Diane and Tobias for all of their hard work and commitment to furthering the work of the PAM members of the burns care community and that we will miss not only your commitment but your friendship. I hope that we can continue the good work and that we will see you in Helsinki. Enjoy all of your new found free time!! New members Prevention news Pictures of congress 4 7 8,9 Best wishes from all of us on the PAM committee. Teresa Tredoux Thank you Anna!!! Report of EBA congress in Barcelona Special interest PAM Every congress the PAM committee gives a special interest meeting. In the PAM we have committee members with experiences in providing care in Asia and Africa like Renate Pfann, our occupational therapist, Helma Hofland, nursing care and even more important, prevention activities, Carolyn Cripps. Also Jacques Latarget is still working as a anaesthetist in remote areas for teaching purposes. In January 2017 some members of the PAM committee have participated in a meeting in South Africa ( newsletter winter 2017). This was the reason to introduce the theme Challenges of providing burn care in a multicultural society outside but also inside Europe. PAM NEWS PAGE 1

The session started with a theoretical background from Renate. She presented ways to put cultural competence, diversity and inclusion into practice. A very nice kick off, and it gave us ideas of what was to expect the rest of the session. The next presenter was Veronica Cortes from Swiss. She guided us through a very difficult case in their burn centre in Zurich, looking after a child coming from a Bedouin family. The problems this team experienced, such as miscommunication due to language problems, noncompliance of hospital rules and even physical and verbal abuse by the family was recognized by several people in the audience and gave many others food for thought. Two colleagues from the Red Cross Hospital in Cape town, South Africa, presented their experiences trying to manage to keep up high standards of care in a resource limited environment. Mrs. Pursad, the occupational therapist presented a pathway of the recovery from a burn injury within the diverse South African context. The head nurse, Mrs. Goosen, talked about overcoming burn unit nursing challenges with the accent on infection prevention. The next presenter, Mrs. Hammink, psychologist from the Netherlands, looked with us into the cultural background and context of patients with burn injuries, how different worlds meet in a hospital. She introduced a valuable approach: Watch, Wait and Wonder. Several examples were given, again recognized by the audience. Our last presenter was mrs. Fanstone, physiotherapist from the UK, who gave us 10 effective rehabilitation lessons learned from all her work and journeys overseas. But sometimes pictures have more effect then words. She finished her presentation with a slideshow of burn patients who recovered from the injury and some patients who did not. These impressive photos were accompanied with the song from Labi Siffre: Something inside so strong. The touched audience left, in thought, quiet the room after this impressive special interest meeting. Helma Hofland PAM PRIZES at EBA Congress Barcelona 2017 Congratulations! 3 PREVENTION NEWS Prevention at the EBA congress September 2017 Eva van Zoonen, EBA prevention committee The Prevention section at the EBA Congress consisted of two parallel sessions and one business meeting. The business meeting was used for presentations about the work of the Prevention Committee and announcements of change. Carolyn Cripps gave us some insight into the Cape Town PAM Prevention exchange project and Jacques Latarjet kept us busy with a new app predicting TBSA. Eva van Zoonen explained the online prevention survey that was sent to all EBA members to complete. We welcomed our new member Ilalaria Tocco Tussardi from Italy. Carolyn Cripps said goodbye as Chairman and introduced Koen Maertens as our new chairman. We also said a sad farewell to Tobias Tandrup, our valued committee member from Sweden, whose IT expertise and skill in website design gave the EBA its Prevention website. The first parallel session was used for presentations on studies of epidemiology and risk factors. Our own committee member Jacques showed us how to realize a national data collections system for inpatients, a system that might be possible to implement in every country. Mr. Vieira from Portugal presented the epidemiological characteristics of non-accidental burns. Mr. Huss from Sweden presented his epidemiological study on fire fatalities and his study on the role of smoking in burn injury during long-term oxygen therapy. He showed us the influence of legislation on accident figures. Eva reviewed risk factors that are of influence on the increased mortality in the elderly and pointed out the interesting risk factors to influence. Finally, Mr.Palmu from Finland showed us how impulsiveness and burn accidents are related to each other. The second parallel session was reserved for presentations on prevention strategies and their evaluation. Mrs. Persson from Sweden demonstrated the cooperation project with IKEA to teach parents how to be safe, an interesting cooperation with the industry. Mrs. Lucena from Sweden showed us how to empower schools to work together on a safer community and to reduce the number of burns in young children. Last but not least, Mrs.Harriet Quinn Scoggins from the UK told us the details of her PhD project into the prevention of burns in children. She showed us a safe tea campaign, a feasibility study and a costeffectiveness study. Nice examples of how to make burn prevention more evidence based. The prevention section was closed by an award ceremony. Harriet Quinn Scoggins received the Prevention Award for her excellent research into burns prevention: Abstract: Learn About Burns: A Feasibility Study of a School Based Burns Prevention Program (see Abstracts_20_901.html) Prevention NEWS PAGE 3

New members at the PAM and Prevention committees New chair of the PAM committee: Teresa Tredoux My name is Teresa Tredoux and I am the Lead Nurse for the St Andrew`s Burns Service in Chelmsford, United Kingdom: I qualified as a Nurse in 1988 and have worked within the burns speciality since I joined the St Andrew`s Burns Service in 1993 and have held a number of different roles within the service which provides care for adults and children, I became a lead nurse in Having recently graduated with an MSc in Healthcare Leadership I am particularity interested in how we support members of the multidisciplinary team to work together to provide the highest standard of evidenced based care. I have been a member of the PAM committee since 2013 and am delighted to be taking over as chair. My aim is to continue to build on the good work that the committee has already undertaken and to increase the involvement of PAM members across Europe in the work of the EBA as well as continuing to work on the guidelines, verification and congress preparation. All of the committee would be delighted to hear from any one who like to be involved in the work that we are doing or would like to hear more about it. New member PAM committee: Christine Rosch Christine Rosch, BScN, clinical nurse specialist, Intensive Care Burns Unit, UniversitätsSpital Zürich I completed my training as a pediatric nurse 1989 in Berlin and worked for the following years in different pediatric units. After I moved to Switzerland, I specialized in adult intensive care in 2000 in Zürich. In 2013, I finished my studies in Nursing Science with a bachelor degree. Since 2002, I am working on the Intensive care Burns unit at the University Hospital of Zürich. Over the years, I worked in different roles on this unit, since the last 8 years as a clinical nurse specialist. Burned patients and their families for me are a very interesting group of people and I carry on to learn from and about them. My focus is not only on intensive care, I participate also in follow up. We organize meetings with our former patients or peer support to visit them in the hospital. In partnership with the rehabilitation clinic we stay in regular contact, based on our pathway for burned patients. Reason for joining the PAM committee: For burned patients and their families it is very important to be treated by an experienced multiprofessional burn care team. I expect that with joining the PAM committee of the EBA, I will get many new ideas and a deeper insight of what can be done for this group of patients. Current focus in relation to the EBA PAM committee: As a new member, first of all I am very interested in getting to know the PAM committee members and to experience how the committee works together. As intensive care nurse, I am focused on the interprofessional work of burn care teams. How to prevent the Post Intensive Care Syndrom and how to support the families of burned patients are other topics I focus on. NEW MEMBERS PAGE 4

PREVENTION COMMITTEE new members Towards a firesafe Europe! Koen Maertens (Belgium), Chair EBA Prevention committee From 2013 till 2017 I was a member of the Professions Allied to Medicine (PAM) committee at the European Burns Association. At the EBA congress in Barcelona I was pleased to join the EBA Prevention committee. It's with great pleasure and a huge honor to succeed Carolyn Cripps as the new chair of the prevention committee of the European Burns Association. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Carolyn for her great contributions and her hard work in the committee. I m very glad she will stay on board for the following term and feed the committee with her insights and good practices throughout her large network. During my period as chair of the Prevention committee, I would like to focus on following points together with the other committee members Carolyn (UK), Eva (The Netherlands), Jacques (France) and Ilaria (Italy): 1. Collect resources & prevention materials and share & promote good prevention practices through our prevention website 2. Collect reliable data on causes of fire incidents where upon adequate prevention intervention strategies could be alienated. 3. Follow different trends in EU according the refugee stream and the impact of cultural differences concerning fire safety. 4. Increasing awareness in burns prevention & fire safety in the media by setting up a European campaign on fire safety. 5. Reach out to our main stakeholder and partner, being Firefighters, who can help us spreading our prevention messages. Let's go all together for less burns victims! Let s go towards a firesafe Europe! #preventionisbetterthancure New member of the Prevention Committe: Ilaria Tocco Tussardi, MBBS (MD) Short autobiography: Dr. Ilaria Tocco Tussardi is a young Italian Plastic Surgeon with a genuine interest in burns and wound care. During her Residency training at the University Hospital of Padua Padua Burns Centre (IT), she progressively implemented her knowledge and competence in this field, visiting quite a number of Burns Centres both in the developed World (California, Pennsylvania United States of America; Sweden) and developing countries (Kenya). While being exposed to burn care, she became quickly aware of the fact that prevention is the best medicine in burns and she developed a passion for the public health side of burn injuries, e.g. large scale burn prevention programs, prevention campaigns, and strategies for increasing public awareness. This topic was a great part of her final thesis when she graduated Plastic Surgeon ( Plastic reconstructive surgery volunteerism in developing countries: an international hospital based-experience from central Kenya ). Currently, she is employed as Acute care Physician and Clinical Instructor in Wound Care in the Public Healthcare System in Padua, IT. Reason for joining the prevention committee: I hope to give contribution and add value to the work of the EBA prevention committee by offering my international high-quality education, my solid background in burn care and my enthusiasm for spreading education and awareness. Special interests: burn awareness campaigns, clinical data management and analysis, life restoration after burn injury, health care and training services in underserved communities. 7 PREVENTION NEWS European conference on Injury Prevention and Safty Promotion 2017 Eva van Zoonen; EBA prevention committee The fourth European conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion was held in Amsterdam in September As a follow up to the 2016 World conference in Helsinki. Researchers and policy officers in the field of injury prevention from all over Europe came together to discuss the latest developments in their field. The program was divided into sessions on injury data analyses, prevention strategies and prevention policies. Burn injuries play an important role in injury prevention. According to WHO data, approximately 10% of all unintentional injury deaths are due to fire-related burns. However, strategies for burn prevention are frequently similar to prevention strategies for injuries with other causes. For example. the aging process in high income country s and the associated rise in morbidity is not only an important topic in burns prevention, but also in fall prevention. The conference was therefore a great opportunity to learn from each other and to build interesting networks. One of the important outcomes of the conference was the call for reliable and connectable causes of injury (aetiology) data. Reliable aetiology data is most important when insight into the causes and circumstances of injury is needed in order to develop interventions based on these insights. Another important outcome was the call for evaluated interventions. Too many interventions are not well evaluated. This makes it impossible to learn from previous interventions and to learn whether they are effective. As an important stakeholder in burns prevention, the EBA needs to stimulate the collection of reliable aetiology data and the development of well evaluated prevention strategies. Prevention survey We have sent you a short survey. Please help us by filing this in. It will only take you a couple of minutes. Click on this link: to open the survey. Thank you very much for your help! PREVENTION NEWS PAGE 7

Burned surface calculation application on smart phone The burn unit in Saint Joseph Saint Luc Hospital in Lyon, France, has developed a free mobile application to measure the TBSA of burn wounds. The app, called e-burn, is designed for use in emergency departments or under prehospital conditions and available free on Android through the Play Store and on IOS through the App store (no charge for the app). It allows the calculation of TBSA by painting on a body image with one finger. One can specify the depth of the burns and adjust the size of the brush. The app can be used both in children and adults as it uses the Lund and Browder chart, depending on the areas burned. Moreover, the app estimates the fluid resuscitation volumes according to Parkland or Carvajal formulae, depending on the age and size of the patient (the Parkland formulae can be adjusted to fit special clinical conditions). Finally, the results and image can be easily shared via your favorite secure mailing system. Pictures of the congress PREVENTION NEWS / PICTURES CONGRESS PAGE 8
