2 Dear exchange student Great that you are interested in an exchange experience with the nursing or midwifery department at Thomas More campus Turnhout. Most of you take part in one of the European Commission s educational programmes, such as Erasmus. +. Others are visiting Thomas More in the framework of an exchange agreement at faculty level between your home university and Thomas More University of Applied Sciences. As an exchange student, you remain enrolled at your home university while spending a few weeks or months at Thomas More, free of charge. You can only study at Thomas More as an exchange student if your home institution has a formal exchange agreement with Thomas More. Besides the possibility of doing a traineeship we offer two types of courses: Interdisciplinary courses offered to all Thomas More University of Applied Sciences incoming students, and Specific courses in the bachelor of nursing / midwifery education. 3 COURSES 1. Compulsory course unit # ECTS / / / 2. Elective courses We don t offer a compulsory course. But besides a traineeship in nursing or midwifery of 10, 15 or 20 ECTS, students can choose courses for a maximum of 30 ECTS per semester. We offer two types of courses: Interdisciplinary courses offered to all Thomas More University of Applied Sciences incoming students, and Specific courses in the bachelor of nursing / midwifery education. As (intercultural) communication is very important in nursing and midwifery practice we advise you to choose the course Survival Dutch. We recommend strongly to attend the course Tour of Flanders (only in the second semester). As you get a broader view on health care in Flanders and you will get to know other Erasmus students in Flanders. For more information and application please go to the website: associatie.kuleuven.be/flandershealthcare The course Medical English, is created especially for those students who are not native English speakers. Please read the entry of every course in the course list carefully before applying. Thomas More remains the right to change the learning agreement upon arrival if the student doesn t meet the to enter the course. The combination of courses can be restricted by planning issues (as courses will be provided in different campuses) and will be communicated in forehand! Welcome days will be organized in campus Geel and Mechelen in September 2018 for the first semester. And at the beginning of February 2018 for the second semester ( ). 3

Purpose of (a foreign) clinical placement: - integrate your theoretical knowledge into the practice - adapt new skills - improve teamwork - broaden your vision - on a different culture - on a different way of health-care - on the different tasks as a nurse, comparing to your own country to develop initiative and a sense of responsibility -... More information can be found on a separate sheet concerning the traineeship. The link tutors will coach and evaluate your learning process, based on your individual learning goals and based on the information from the mentors and the head-nurse of the ward / organization. The final evaluation will be made at the end of a period on the ward by the link tutor and the mentors. This evaluation will be made on evaluation forms from your home institute or will be based on our own evaluation system. There will be a written evaluation report and Erasmus students will receive an ECTS grade according to the grading system in Thomas More. 5

Written assignment: Discuss your patient case in two pages (1 A4 sheet front and back). - Give some general background information on the patient. - Discuss the patient s medical history. - What is the patient s current medical problem? 7 - Give some background information on the medical condition or the disease itself. - How is the patient treated? - What is your role in the treatment? - 2. Oral assignment : - Your presentation should take about minimum 3 minutes. The course can be attended to dig in the language without an obligation to do the oral presentation. In case the student chooses not to do the oral presentation, the student will not gain the ECTSpoints and has to pay 50 euro. 8 The programme Tour of Flanders intends: To be open to diversity and unity in nursing/midwifery care in Europe To be open to economic, ethical and social policy in healthcare in Belgium and other countries To deepen and explore the cultural sensitivity: to deepen and explore earlier professional knowledge, insight, skills, attitudes and competences in nursing/midwifery care, to deliver nursing/midwifery care from an evidence based perspective to improve the knowledge of medical English to make English literature more accessible to form many, various attitudes: e.g. open mindedness; tolerance; critical thinking, global engagement To practice skills: e.g. communication; teamwork To enter into a professional nursing/midwifery relationship with the patient and the interdisciplinary team. 10 ELECTIVE COURSE: Interdisciplinary course code Z13456 (sem 1) & Z13455 (sem 2) title SURVIVAL DUTCH Niomi Kelly (Mechelen) Hans Geerts (Geel) 3 ECTS English / Dutch Period Autumn: Geel & Mechelen Spring: Geel & Mechelen Content This language course Dutch for foreign students focuses on the basic language skills one needs to survive in a Dutch speaking region. Gradually your competence and confidence in speaking, reading and writing Dutch will be built up, starting from the day to day life. ICT is used in order to give everybody the opportunity to follow his/her own tempo. Communication exercises in and outside the classroom are very important in this course. 11 ELECTIVE COURSE: Interdisciplinary course code title YR0349 ETHICAL MANAGERIAL PROBLEM SOLVING Patrick Geussens 4 ECTS English Period Autumn (Mechelen) Spring (Mechelen) Content By the end of this course, students should be able to: recognize and anticipate ethical issues in a range of business activities; use appropriate concepts and methods of reasoning to understand ethical problems and dilemmas in management; feel confident in explaining the importance of ethical considerations to stakeholders in business; use ethics imaginatively to enhance business decision making; recognize the value position they bring to management; identify some common forms of ethical failure and success in corporations; recognize that arguing for an ethical position is not mere preaching; explain in their own words what they mean by moral leadership; diagnose situational or organizational factors that work for and against your leading with principles; explain the value of organizational and professional ethics. Ethical managerial problem-solving is a course designed to survey various controversial problems, dilemmas and quandaries encountered by managers in the contemporary organization. The course will share a number of strategies, approaches and models of reasoning about ethical issues which those in management can employ as problem-solving techniques. 12 ELECTIVE COURSE: Interdisciplinary course code title YR0129 INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION To be confirmed 3 ECTS English Period Autumn (Mechelen) Spring (Mechelen) Content The student reflects on his / her own cultural frame and examines what impact this has on one s performance in group The student shows respect for cultural differences The student has knowledge and understanding of some basic concepts of intercultural communication The student demonstrates understanding of (inter) personal, situational and cultural factors in intercultural communication The student translates these insights into the analysis of a concrete case Daily interaction with colleagues, clients / patients, managers, parents, students from other cultures can be exciting but not always so obvious. This course provides the necessary knowledge, skills and practical handles to effectively deal with diversity in your future work, but also in daily life: Obtaining insight in -, and learning the cross cultural communication competences with examples, cases and group exercises. Putting into practice the cultural dimensions in communication according to Geert Hofstede, learning the TOPOI model as an instrument of detecting and anticipating crosscultural miscommunications in intercultural communication. Making our students aware of the filters in communication and of the potential culture shocks in an international context; recognizing the different culturally defined organization and communication models, - also reflected in the media. All the theory is put into practice and mirrored against the setting of an international media life.
