Metaphors of Contemporary Caring Concepts May 31, 2013 Susan Driscoll MPH, MSN, ANP C, WHNP C Kathi Voege Harvey MSN, FNP C Alina Miracle MSN, FNP C BACKGROUND CONTEMPORARY CARING 1
S peak Out P H I A Propose nursing process as caring in the human health experience (p. E16). Propose nursing process as caring in the human health experience (p. E16). Unitary Transformative 2
Health, not only as the absence of disease, but rather the optimal life pattern for the individual, family, or community in the evolving now. Newman (2008) states that health is an evolving unitary pattern of the whole, including patterns of disease (p. 6). Caring is a quality of participative patterning It is sensing and moving synchronously with the dynamic rhythms of relating, following the lead of the other in the dance of human becoming (E19). Consciousness, as defined by the Maya scholar Arguelles, is the basic way of knowing through attunement, resonant receptivity, intuition, and revelation. A direct unfiltered index of communication (cited in Newman et al., 2008, p. E20). 3
In mutual process the self and other are engaged in an experience that promotes awareness of self and other and potentiates insight with new choices and actions (Newman et al., 2008, p. E21). Patterning is the dynamic relationship with human and non human environments. Presence is being with other in resonance, letting go, being open, and becoming one with another. 4
Meaning, as described in Parse s (2007) humanbecoming theory, is a co creative process. It is the reflections of patterns and interactions that lead to new meaning. It is ultimately argued that Caring is not a good candidate for a unifying concept for nursing. Cowling, Smith, and Watson (2008) Proposes a unitary caring science praxis. 5
Cowling, Smith, and Watson (2008) Fundamental competencies include: Wholeness Consciousness Caring Pattern Consciousness Transformation Transcendence Relationship Meaning Cowling, Smith, and Watson (2008) Dissolving boundaries between consciousness, wholeness, and caring Cowling, Smith, and Watson (2008) Caring is informed by five meanings: Manifesting intention Attending to dynamic flow Appreciating pattern Experiencing the infinite Inviting creative emergence 6

Carousel of Caring Caring is an essential feature and expression of being human (Boykin & Schoenhofer 2001) In the SOPHIA we were asked to think of an analogy in Boykin and Schoenhofer s Nursing as Caring dance of caring persons example which described being for and being with the nursed. I imagined a merry-go-round or carrousel where the patient is at the center of caring and all points are caring concepts. Inspiration for Idea Concepts Patient is the center point. Each spoke represents caring concept. Multiple or single person able to move around patient to provide caring concepts. Meeting patients needs goal of theme. 8
