Introduction to Theory as a Guide to Caritas Practice Vision and Overview: Transform self and systems with an intentional Caritas Consciousness/Caritas Ways of Being that integrate and restore Caring-Healing and Love into our life and work/world.
Renowned Nursing Philosopher, Theorist and Author Distinguished Professor of Nursing & Endowed Chair in Caring Science at University of Colorado Denver & Anschutz Medical Center Campus Former Dean of Nursing at University Health Sciences Center, Denver Past President of National League for Nursing (NLN) Fellow of American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) Founder of the original Center for Human Caring Founder and President of not-for-profit: Watson Caring Science Institute Boulder, CO World leader and luminary in field of Caring Science We are the light in institutional darkness, and in this caritas model we get to return to the light of our humanity Watson, 2008
Seven Blunders of the World Mistakes that lead to violence: 1. Wealth without t work 2. Pleasure without conscience 3. Knowledge without character 4. Commerce without morality 5. Science without humanity 6. Worship without sacrifice 7. Politics without principle 8. Rights without responsibilities Ghandi
The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn, the bird waits in the egg. And in the highest vision of a soul, a waking angel stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of realities. -James Allen The public needs and wants so much more an authentic deeper level connection versus merely an industrialized service orientation. A true congruence between theory and practice!
Theory means - To See Research Theory Practice
Caring Science Terminology as a Foundation for the Discipline of Nursing 1. Ontology = A World View of Being What does it mean to be? Separatist or Relational 2. Epistemology = Ways of Knowing Physical, Objective, Empirical, Technical, Uni- dimensional (Scientific/Medical Model) Body, Mind, Spirit, Multi-Dimensional Informs our Profession, Values, Ethic, Education and Meta-Messages Messages in Traditions that Ground Us
Knowing, Being and Doing 3. Methodology = Our ways of knowing, inform our methods of being, doing and teaching: Pedagogy: Our current ways of teaching/informing limited, dull, boring, technical & outdated 4. Praxis = Our Methodology in Action Practice is informed by our world view and our knowledge base, which ultimately informs our methods of practice

LOVE the old un/familiar name... Behind the hands, not known because not looked for. But hidden in the stillness, behind the scenes. T.S. Eliot
Centering Exercises Consciousness Presence Inner Chatter - Ego Cleansing Forgiveness Healing Acknowledgement Gratitude All that brought you to hear & now Light, Joy, Love! We are the light in institutional darkness, and in this caritas model we get to return to the light of our humanity Watson, 2008
Nursing involves a sense of presence higher than human, a divine intelligence that creates, sustains, and organizes the universe and our awareness of an inner connection with this higher reality Caring Consciousness & Intentionality Florence Nightingale
Transpersonal Caring - Healing Relationships Held in reverence; Considered sacred space; not a technique or something one does to other a process related to philosophic, moral and spiritual foundation; a relational ontology that is life giving and life enriching for both nurse and the one being cared for.
Jean Watson s 10 Caritas Processes as Philosophical Guide to Clinical Practice m, Inc. Baptist Health System 2009 by B
The Caring Moment A heart-centered loving energetic field; a turning point; A call to higher/deeper consciousness, intentionality; An authentic choice of caring/living; requires presencecentering-search for meaning; New level l of authenticity- ti it potentiating ti ti healing and wholeness.
Linking Caring Science with Heart Science Honoring our connection with the sacred work and nature of nursing Compassion, Wisdom, Love & Caring! Re-patterning of self and healing systems From Chaos to Coherence Creating space for new/restorative views to inform us, our practice, our environments: i.e.., HeartMath & Science Understanding that we cannot be something new or different, if we do not see something different! Transform healing beyond a Fix-it it curing model to merge with caring models of Being and Becoming WCSI 2009 HeartMath
Universal Consciousness Field: Nurses around the world bring this loving heart-centered caring energy of Love and Caring to their individual work every day. However, nurses may be silently unaware of their actual energetic linkage and connection they have with others in their environment, and their natural capability of unlimited expansive potential ti to affect the universal consciousness field of humanity.
Universal Field of Cosmic Love: The electromagnetic field radiating from the heart is the basis of an energetic environment that is not only within us, and around us, and many believe is the source of life sustaining energy and our humanity; the source of inner truth, beauty, compassion, creativity, love and caring, and our connection with life force. This universal field of Cosmic Love has limitless capability for healing, especially when focused from an intentional collective heart centered loving consciousness.
Nursing as an Archetype for Caring: Nurses and nursing exemplify an archetype for human caring in the world. Collectively nurses can radiate intentional heart-centered coherent fields of Love by simultaneously connecting through a guided heartcentered Caring Field meditation. Indirectly nurse s heart-centered Caring-Love vibrations would be contributing to elevating and expanding the electromagnetic energy field that in turn would increase the human health - healing consciousness at this point in human history.
Million Nurse Global Project: This Million Nurse Caring Connection would be a scheduled series and committed synchronized events. Global meditation connections would be radiating around the world each month; the first one initially led by Dr Jean Watson, and would include other professional international ti colleagues and organizations. This project is open to expansion and on-going growth as world commitment and communities evolve toward a Global Caring Consciousness. WCSI
Million Nurse Launch Date: The formal launch of the Million Nurse Global Caring Field Project is planned for January 1, 2010 at 12 pm / Noon - Eastern Standard Time (EST/ UTC -0500). A series of heart-centered meditations and events led by Dr. Jean Watson and other dignitaries will be scheduled and broadcast around dthe world.

Core Concepts of Watson s Theory of Human Caring 1. Practice of loving-kindness and equanimity 2. Authentic presence: enabling deep belief of other (patient, t colleague, family, other) 3. Cultivation of one s own spiritual practice toward wholeness of mind/body/spirit beyond ego 4. Being the caring-healing g environment 5. Allowing miracles (openness to unexpected Please read the document (PDF) on Core Concepts of Jean Watson s Theory of Human Caring/Caring Science available in the CCEP orientation online files!
Questions to Ponder: 1. Identify 2 concepts found in this presentation that you believe you can apply to your own clinical / professional practice? 1. Describe the relationship between science and heartcentered caritas nursing?
We hope this presentation will be helpful l in guiding you on your new journey as a Caritas Coach! In Love, light and blessings: Your CCEP Faculty
