7-B THIRD The Role of Caring in the Human Health Experience: Magic, Medicine, and Healing Joyce B. Perkins PhD, MS, MA, RN, AHN-BC, CHTP, RMT-P is an Assistant Professor at Augsburg College Department of Nursing in Minneapolis and Rochester, MN. She teaches in the graduate program, at the Master s Degree and Doctor of Nursing Practice level. She is an Advanced Practice Board Certified Holistic Nurse (AHN-BC) with certifications in Healing Touch (CHTP), Reiki (RMT-P) Therapeutic Touch, and Qigong. She has developed and taught group fitness programs for 29 years. She also has a Master s degree in Psychiatric Nursing from the UMN, and a PhD in Nursing from the UCHSC, Denver. She practiced as a psychiatric nurse at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. for 12 years, on an in-patient depression, mood disorder unit. She has recently aligned her efforts with Dr. Jean Watson s International Institute of Caring Science as an adjunct faculty member, where she will develop and expand her work in Unitary Caring Science.

The Role of Caring in the Human Health Experience: Magic, Medicine, and Healing Joyce B. Perkins PhD, M.S., M.A., AHN-BC, CHTP, RMP-T Augsburg College Department of Nursing Minneapolis, MN. 1. Define Unitary Caring Science. Smith, M. (1999). Watson & Smith. (2001) Perkins (2004) 2. How does caring as love and compassion relate to healing? Objective: Understand the role of caring in the human health experience Margaret Newman, Marlaine Smith, Fran Reeder, & Joyce Perkins 1

Rogers Leininger Newman Smith Reeder Watson Leuning Perkins Historical Overview Clarify ambiguity surrounding the concept of caring. Situate caring within one conceptual system.unitary world view. Analyze the dialogue in Nursing. Purpose of the Smith Article (1999) Manifesting intentions Appreciating pattern Attuning to dynamic flow Experiencing the infinite Inviting creative emergence Five Constitutive Meanings of the Concept of Caring from the Perspective of SUHB(Smith, 1999) 2

This trans-theoretical position moves nursing toward theoretical integration of SUHB and Caring Science and creative synthesis, vs. separation A tipping point from looking at difference to looking at commonalities. Reconciling caring dissonance. Toward Clarification of the Concept of Caring: Watson and Smith( 2001) SUHB-Resolving Dissonance-TCS Shared notions of the concepts in both SUHB and TCS (Watson, Smith, 2001, p.459) Paradigm I: Deals with the physical, concrete objective information. i.e. medical model Paradigm II: Deals with emotion and social, cultural conditions interacting. Adds a subjective, subtle level of information dealing with meaning. Paradigm III: Energy field and nonlocal time and space. Levels of In-formation Paradigms of Nursing(Newman et al. 1991) 3

Human Heart Traveling Waves Standing Waves Harmonic and Dampening Effects The Shape of Resonance 5

Cochlea of the Inner Ear Forms a Golden Spiral Golden Ratio Standing Waves in the Human Form (Merrick, 2011) Harmonic Evolution of All Creation Harmonic Shapes in Nature Building Upon the Energetic Template 7

How Energy Leaps Across Dimensions (Merrick, 2011) Understanding Resonance, Coherence, and Harmonic Patterns Everything has a frequency to which it is naturally tuned. Called the prime resonant frequency (PRF) At this frequency, an object will, more readily absorb energy. Each component of your body has its own PRF. Human body 7-10 Hz Heart 100Hz Cell 1000Hz Principles of Resonance Role of Intention and Attention 8

From the Universal Still Point to Dimensions & Symmetries Nursing: The Beauty Way A Unitary Caring Science emerges. Advances contributions to humankind. Creates synthesis of TCS, SUHB, and other theoretical frameworks Facilitates new directions for trans-theoretical knowledge development. Integrates and extends two previously disparate trees of nursing knowledge development (art & science) Invites ethical, ontological, and epistemological scholarship Awakens awareness of deep relationship, and engaged practice. Brings balance, harmony, healing, and wholeness as the spirit is honored, and the sacred returns via conscious, loving participation in all that is. Ultimately, feelings of care, love, compassion, gratitude sit at the gate/doorway of human potential and infinite expression. We are the creators we have been waiting for. Conclusions: Cosmic Consciousness is with us now! 10
