The Academy is the highly successful multi-professional education centre, situated within the Great Western Hospital, Swindon. The Academy boasts state of the art education facilities including telemedicine, video conferencing, extensive IT, an excellent multi profession Library as well as a full range of education rooms, clinical skills lab and lecture theatres. At the Academy we pride ourselves on the high standard of education and training we provide for health and social care staff and students from across the region. Our comprehensive range of courses, which you will find detailed in this prospectus, aim to ensure all individuals are supported in obtaining the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviour for their current or future careers. The courses offer excellent value for money and all courses are quality assessed to ensure all offerings reflect current best practice, and an excellent learner experience. Employers value our courses for their relevance and quality as well as the applied nature of learning which focuses on enhanced service delivery and improved patient experience. The Academy also offers a flexible approach with the employers designed course which allows employers to work with the education team to develop education events and packages delivered by experts to meet the employer s specific needs. Such courses or events can be held within the Academy or the employer s place of work. We have an expert team of clinical and non-clinical qualified trainers and educators who are on hand to deliver high quality education and training for those attending our courses. We also have an administration team dedicated to ensuring that from booking right through to evaluation, you are provided with the highest level of service so you can focus on the most important thing learning new skills. No matter where you start, through us you will have access to further training and the opportunity to stretch your abilities helping you provide the best care and advance your career. 4 The Academy Quality Assurance The Academy continually strives to assess and improve the quality of training we offer. We know that by setting high standards, we aim to perform well. We actively engage our students, partners and staff to encourage feedback. We strive to use our resources effectively and imaginatively thus ultimately contributing to improving opportunities and quality of care in the communities that we serve. Here at the Academy we ensure that our services are fair and accessible to all by compiling and examining equality data every year. The Academy is audited on a regular basis both internally and externally. We commit to: work to continuous quality assurance mechanisms, service standards and be monitored by external assessment. There is no charge to join and if you are unsure of your eligibility, please ask library staff. Opening Times The library is open from: 0830 to 1730 Monday to Thursday and 0830 to 1700 Friday 24 hour access is available via swipe card system. By Rail The nearest main line station is Swindon, located in the town centre. A Hospital Express Shuttle bus service (number 16) links the town centre to the hospital. Cycle parking is available outside the main entrance. By Road The Great Western Hospital is located to the southeast of Swindon Town Centre, close to Junction 15 of the M4 Motorway. If using a sat nav, use postcode SN3 6BB. From the M4 Exit at Junction 15 and head north on the A419 towards Swindon. Following signs to the Hospital, turn off the A419 onto the slip road before the Commonhead flyover and turn left into Marlborough Road, A4259. The entrance to the Hospital is 300 metres on the left. From the North On approaching Swindon join the A419 south following signs for the M4; this is the Stratton St Margaret bypass. Following signs to the Hospital, turn off onto the slip road before the Commonhead flyover and take the fourth exit at the roundabout into Marlborough Road, A4259. The entrance to the Hospital is 300 metres on the left. From the Town Centre Leave the town centre via Fleming Way to the Magic Roundabout and travel straight across into Queens Drive A4259. At the next roundabout take the third exit to remain on Queens Drive. Travel straight ahead at the next roundabout into Marlborough Road. The entrance to the Hospital is 1500 metres on the right. Car park charges apply so please bring change for machines. Refreshments Meals and snacks are available in the hospital restaurant. Café Blue offers a selection of sandwiches and cakes as well as Starbucks coffee. A WRVS shop is also available and offers a range of drinks, sandwiches and snacks. The Academy is situated on the lower ground floor of the main hospital. The Main is opposite the SwiCC Centre, although you can also gain access through the main hospital. 6 Clinical Skills Courses Clinical Skills Courses The training of all healthcare professionals in basic clinical skills has changed considerably over the past few years. The Trust has invested in a purpose-built, multidisciplinary training suite in which a wide range of clinical skills can be taught using realistic, life-like manikins in simulated clinical situations. Clinical Skills Courses This provides an opportunity for staff to practise their skills in a supportive environment. Initial training, refresher training or skills updates are all available within the Academy and can be delivered in clinical areas. Training can be organised individually or on a group basis. We also offer flexible hours across evenings and weekends to make training opportunities more convenient. You must keep your knowledge and skills up to date throughout your working life... You should regularly take part in educational activities which maintain and develop your competence and performance Good Medical Practice (GMP), GMC, Informal visits to the Academy and discussions with staff are encouraged. This might involve finding out more about particular training formats or just having the chance to talk things through with a skilled trainer. The Academy offers a broad array of clinical skills which are accessible to all disciplines. Our courses are regularly updated and developed to move with changing research and legislative drivers. We draw upon the skills of a range of experienced practitioners to deliver the highest standard of information and care related subjects. We also work in partnership with other educational facilities to enable us to provide access to specialist training within the local area. You must have the knowledge and skills for safe and effective practice when working without direct supervision...you must recognise and work within the limits of your competence... You must take part in appropriate learning and practice activities that maintain and develop your competence and performance. 7 Clinical Skills Courses CS1 I.V. drug administration Registered Nurses, Midwives and Operating Department Practitioners who are wanting to take on the role of intravenous medicine administration. To provide practical training in giving IV medicines, the recognition and initial treatment of anaphylactic shock as well as the risks and benefits of IV therapy. A study day involving lecture/ practical session with accompanying competency to be completed in the workplace. You will need to attend a drugs calculation test and complete a pre-course workbook. CS2 Central Venous Catheterisation (CVC) management Registered Nurses, Doctors, and Midwives. To provide knowledge in the care of a patient with a CVC including: what is CVC? complications dressing options sites what can a CVC be used for? maintaining catheter patency removing a CVC meds and fluid administration types of CVC patient management CVP measurement insertion of a CVC. A study day involving lecture/ practical session with accompanying competency to be completed in the workplace. CS3 Tracheostomy management For all members of the multi-disciplinary team, including Registered Nurses, Nursing Auxiliaries (NVQ Level 3 only), Doctors and Physiotherapists. To provide lectures and scenarios including knowledge and skills relating to caring for the patient with a tracheostomy including: what is a tracheostomy? types of tracheostomy contraindications patient care advantages and disadvantages methods of insertion complications oxygen therapy / humidification. A study day involving lecture/ practical session with accompanying competency to be completed in the workplace. CS4 Venepuncture Registered Nurses, Midwives, Operating Department Practitioners, EDAs, Assistant practitioners and Nurse Auxiliaries. To provide a combination of lectures and hands on practical skills including: legal issues professional issues infection control issues anatomy potential complications and risks patient safety equipment understanding the process of blood taking. A study day involving lecture/ practical session with accompanying competency to be completed in the workplace. Participants are required to complete some self directed learning prior to the day. To provide a combination of lectures and hands on practical skills including: legal issues professional issues infection control issues anatomy potential complications and risks patient safety equipment understanding the process of blood taking. A study day involving lecture/ practical session with accompanying competency to be completed in the workplace. CS6 Male catheterisation Doctors, Registered Nurses, Assistant Practitioners and Emergency Department Assistants. To provide a combination of lectures and practical skills including: reasons for catheterisation and patient assessment the implications risks and contraindications product selection infection control accountability and competence. A study day involving lecture/ practical session with accompanying competency to be completed in the workplace. CS7 Female catheterisation Doctors, Medical Students, Registered Nurses, Nursing Auxiliaries, Midwives, Paramedics, Emergency Care Practitioners and Emergency Department Assistants. To provide a combination of lectures and practical skills including: reasons for catheterisation and patient assessment the implications risks and contraindications product selection infection control accountability and competence. A study day involving lecture/ practical session with accompanying competency to be completed in the workplace. CS8 Diabetes and blood glucose monitoring Registered Nurses, Midwives, Nursing Auxiliaries, Allied Health Professionals, Paramedics and Emergency Care Practitioners. To provide competency based training with theory and practical demonstrations for the following: diabetes physiology control of blood sugar levels documentation. A study session involving lecture/ discussion / practical with accompanying competency to be completed in the workplace. 9 Clinical Skills Courses CS9 Basic ECG recording Nursing and Medical Students, Registered Nurses, Nursing Auxiliaries, Midwives and Emergency Care Practitioners. To provide competency based training with theory and practice of the following: recording an ECG & relevant documentation, accountability and competence. A study session involving lecture/ discussion/ practical with accompanying competency to be completed in the workplace. CS10 Interpretation of ECGs All staff who may be involved in recording and interpreting ECGs. To provide a competency based training with theory and practice of the following: reading and interpreting an ECG and relevant documentation accountability and competence in interpreting the results of an ECG. A study session involving lecture/ discussion/ practical with accompanying competency to be completed in the workplace. CS11 Discover the rhythm of life (Two days) All staff who are involved with in-depth interpretation of ECGs and diagnosis. To provide a combination of lectures and practical skills including: anatomy & physiology, performing an accurate ECG interpreting the ECG atrial rhythms ventricular & junctional myocardial infarction & ischaemia, bundle branch blocks AV block case studies & review. A study session involving lecture/ discussion / practical. CS12 Aseptic technique Nursing and Medical Students, Registered Nurses, Nursing Auxiliaries, Midwives, Paramedics, Allied Health Professionals and Emergency Care Practitioners. To provide a combination of lectures and practical skills including: aseptic technique and documentation infection control accountability and competence dressing selection cleansing irrigation of wounds. A study session involving lecture/ discussion / practical with accompanying competency to be completed in the workplace. CS13 Healthcare Support Workers and Nursing Auxiliaries intensive training (Three days) Health Support Workers, Nursing Auxiliaries or those intending to apply for post within the Health and Social Care sector. Intensive training to equip Nursing Auxiliaries / Health Care Support Workers with the range of knowledge and skills needed to safely and competently commence work in the clinical area. To provide competency based training. Theory and practice for the following: anatomy and physiology blood pressure respiration rate temperature pulse measurement SOS Scoring documentation of observations pain assessment. A study day involving lecture/practical session. CS15 Pressure area care All staff who work directly with clients/ patients in the Health and Social Care sector. This course is to improve knowledge, practical skills, influence positive behaviour and increase understanding of how to prevent and treat pressure sores when working in the Health and Social Care sector. Topics include: what is a pressure sore? what causes a pressure sore? grading of pressure sores prevention of pressure sores simple and technological interventions identifying who is most at risk how does having a pressure sore affect a client/patient? holistic treatment of the patient/client with a pressure sore. The programme is over half a day and involves lecture, discussion and examination of case studies. CS16 Falls prevention All staff who work directly with clients/ patients in the Health and Social Care sector. This course is to improve knowledge, practical skills, influence positive behaviour and increase understanding of how to identify those at risk and to prevent client /patient falls or fracture when working in the Health and Social Care sector. Topics include: who is at risk? a team approach the importance of risk assessment importance of taking a history how a fall affects a client or patient osteoporosis effective interventions to prevent falls or injury. The programme is over half a day and involves lecture, discussion and examination of case studies. CS17 Infection prevention and control All staff who work directly with clients/ patients in the Health and Social Care sector. This course is to improve knowledge, practical skills, influence positive behaviour and increase understanding of how to prevent and control infection when working in the Health and Social Care sector. Topics include: hand hygiene prevention and treatment of sharps injuries waste management universal precautions. The programme is over half a day and involves lecture, discussion and a practical hand washing session. This includes a self directed learning workbook. Clinical Skills Courses 18 19

11 Clinical Skills Courses CS18 Understanding dementia All staff in the Health and Social Care Sector who work directly with clients/ patients who have dementia. This course is to improve knowledge, skills, influence positive behaviour and increase understanding of dementia and of how to assist clients and carers in a dignified and positive manner. Topics include: what is dementia? signs and symptoms living with dementia how can we help? case studies. The programme is over a full day and involves lecture, discussion facilitated by a local expert in the field of Elderly Mental Health. CS19 Principles of stoma care All staff involved in the care of stoma patients. This course aims to improve knowledge and understanding of stomas and management of the stoma patient. The topics covered will include: anatomy and physiology of the digestive tract reasons for stoma formation the difference between ileostomy, colostomy and urostomy appliances and accessories care of the stoma patient. A study session involving lecture/ discussion/ practical. CS20 Nasogastric tube insertion Nursing and Medical students and all clinical staff involved in the insertion of nasogastric tubes. This course aims to improve knowledge and understanding of insertion of nasogastric tubes and feeding regimes. The topics covered will include: anatomy and physiology of the digestive tract types of tubes available insertion of naso-gastric tubes best practice and care. A study session involving lecture/ discussion/ practical examples. CS21 Multi disciplinary palliative care study day Nursing and Medical students and all clinical staff involved in the palliative care of patients. This course aims to improve knowledge and understanding of the palliative management of the dying patient. A study session involving lecture and discussion. CS22 Cancer care study day Nursing and Medical students and all clinical staff involved in the care of cancer patients. This course aims to improve knowledge and understanding of the undergoing treatment for and with a diagnosis of cancer. A study session involving lecture and discussion. 12 Clinical Skills Courses CS23 Bariatric care study day Nursing and Medical students and all clinical staff involved in the care of bariatric patients. This course aims to improve knowledge and understanding of the care issues of the Bariatric patient including contributions from UK leaders and experts in the field. A study session involving lecture and discussion. CS24 Clinical mandatory training Practice Nurses and Nurses working in Nursing Homes. This course aims to improve knowledge and understanding, change behaviours regarding maintenance of a safe environment and safe practices when working clinically. All training meets national guidelines and legislation for level 1 mandatory training for subjects as follows: adult basic life support fire training manual handling theory and practice/ equipment training medical equipment training falls awareness infection, prevention and control and hand hygiene transfusion of blood and blood products information governance safer practice in medicines administration health and safety/major incident/ Incident reporting and investigation child protection level 1 conflict resolution. A study session involving lecture and discussion and workbook completion. You will sent and asked to complete a pre-course workbook to cover the theoretical subject matter. CS25 Return to the acute setting nursing course Who is it for? Registered Nurses who have not recently worked in an acute setting. This course provides a structured process for the induction and development of Registered Nurses who have not recently worked in an acute setting in the UK. We recognise that the role of an acute nurse today requires a significant level of specific knowledge and skills delivered autonomously with confidence and competence. If you wish to pursue a career in the acute hospital environment, have a current NMC live registration but lack confidence or recent acute experience then this is the course for you. You will also be allocated a placement and supervisor in the clinical setting who will: demonstrate best practice provide support, guidance and encouragement positively challenge aspects of your practice identify and discuss concerns facilitate reflection on your work feedback observed practice establish areas of competence identify areas for development agree and plan future activity. The course is run over 15 weeks in total, mostly evenings. The Return to the Acute Setting (RAS) Course is a comprehensive programme including the following: organisational awareness clinical skills development including drug administration, aseptic technique, catheterisation, observations, pain management and much more personal Professional Development practical and academic assessment certification of successful completion The programme includes lectures, discussion and practical sessions. There are Trust competencies available which, after a period of supervised practice, may be used to assess competency in the workplace. Clinical Skills Courses 22 23

13 NVQ Programmes National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) The Trust provides access to NVQ programmes in a variety of subjects. The service is overseen by a dedicated VQ Manager, plus a team of qualified assessors. The programmes are available to employees from a variety of work backgrounds. NVQ Programmes 24 Within the Trust, we have an approved centre which offers NVQs in the following areas: Health and Social Care at Levels 2 and 3 Health at Level 3 Customer Service Level 2 NVQs represent national standards recognised by employers throughout the country and reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively. It is a government recommendation that all care workers achieve Level 2 as a minimum qualification. If a person has a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) it shows that he/she can do the work for which it has been awarded, to national standards. It means that a person is competent in this kind of work. NVQs are qualifications for work and show that a person can actually do a job, and not simply that he/she knows how to do it in theory. They are made up of units which describe the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively. They are divided into five levels of achievement. Benefits for Individuals NVQs can help a person to prepare for work or help his/her career development. NVQs are achieved through the demonstration of skills. Getting an NVQ shows that a person can do a job to national standards and have the up-to-date skills employers are looking for. With NVQs the practice is as important as the theory -they show what a person can do as well as what he/she knows. NVQs are therefore much more than courses. A person does not have to sit through hours, days, weeks or even years of a course, and there are no exams at the end. NVQs are about putting learning into practice. 25

14 NVQ Programmes Benefits for Employers Employers play a vital role in deciding the standards for NVQs. NVQs can help you improve productivity and competitiveness and many major companies use NVQs and find them valuable tools for business and employee development. They report significant benefits in terms of improved employee performance and motivation; lower staff turnover; provide better staff-supervisor relations; improve staff recruitment and give employers the opportunity to benchmark standards and provide training which can be more specifically targeted to needs. NVQs make sure the employees have the skills and knowledge to meet the company s business needs. Target Groups NVQs are available to anyone at any age or stage of their career and there are no entry qualifications. NVQs are flexible and accessible (within reasonable limits), you can decide the pace, place and way in which you learn. Achievement of NVQs NVQs are achieved through assessment and training. Assessment will normally be through on-the-job observation and questioning. Candidates have to have evidence to prove they have the competence to meet the NVQ standards. Assessors sign-off units when achieved -they test a candidates underpinning knowledge, understanding and workbased performance to make sure they can demonstrate competence in the workplace. When a new candidate starts, their assessor will usually help them to: identify what they can do already agree on the standard and level they are aiming for analyse what they need to learn choose and agree on activities which would allow them to learn what they need. Candidates compare their performance with the standards as they learn. They look at what they have achieved, how much they still need to do and how they should go about it, until they are assessed as competent for a unit or a whole NVQ. The system is right for workers who already have skills and want to increase them, but also for those who are starting from the beginning. As the system is so flexible, new ways of learning can be used immediately, without the more lengthy process of taking courses. NVQ Programmes Assessors can be in-house (fully trained) employees or external people brought in specifically to conduct assessments. They are appointed by an approved Assessment Centre

15 NVQ Programmes Health & Social Care Level 2 All unregistered staff who work in the Health and Social Care sector. To provide theory and practice of the following: Introduction to NVQ; policies and procedures; case studies specific to patient care; how to reflect; basic life support. Three study days and internal assessment by an NVQ assessor. Prior to attending the study day you will be invited to an interview including an assessment of your learning needs and you will be provided with an overview of the qualification requirements. Customer Service NVQ Level 2 All admin and clerical staff. To provide theory and practice of the following: delivering good customer service; how to provide customer service; recognise and deal with customers queries, requests and problems and giving a positive impression. Two study days and internal assessment by an NVQ assessor. Prior to attending the study day you will be invited to an interview including an assessment of your learning needs and given an overview of the qualification requirements. QCF Quality Credit Framework From January 2011 all NVQs will be replaced with QCFs. The QCF is the new framework for creating work related qualifications. The qualifications are designed to allow candidates to learn in a way that suits them, and giving them the skills that employers are looking for. QCFs are designed to be much more flexible than other work-related qualifications. They are made up of units, so you can study at a pace that suits you. Over time, you can combine units in different ways to make up a full qualification. This means that no learning you do is ever lost or counts for nothing. It also means you do not have to repeat learning unnecessarily. If you take vocational qualifications on the QCF, your learning is banked over time and stored on your own personal learner record. This shows what training you have done and helps you to see how you can progress further. The Academy will be offering QCF in Health at Level 2 & 3, Health & Social Care Level 2 and Customer Service Level 2. Assessors award (A1) Any person who has achieved a recognised national qualification. If you are not registered, you must have achieved a minimum level 3 qualification. To provide theory and practice of the following, assessment of learners needs; judging evidence against a criteria; providing feedback and support to learners; contribute to the internal quality assurance process. A study day; assessment of NVQ candidates and internal assessment by an A1 assessor. Applicants will need identified registered NVQ candidates within their field of competence to work with. Internal Verifier s award (V1) Those people who have achieved the A1 qualification. To provide theory and practice of the following, evaluate internal assessment and quality assurance systems; supporting assessors; monitoring the quality of assessors performance meeting external quality assurance requirements. A study day; assessment of NVQ assessors and internal assessment by an V1 assessor. You will also be required to attend Internal Verification panel days and External Verifier visits. We hold a large supply of manikins and equipment to provide training for emergencies of all ages from baby to adult. Simulation Training Great Western Hospitals has both a SimMan and a SimBaby which offers more exposure to simulated critical incidents in a controlled and supportive environment. These highly technical training aids provide realistic anatomy and clinical functionality so that they can be used to simulate a variety of emergency scenarios. There is also a video de-brief capability

To provide the assessment of the unconscious adult, assessment of airway, breathing & circulation, the skills required for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation including artificial ventilation and chest compressions and the use of pocket mask/bag valve, mask ventilation /resuscitation trolleys/recovery position/choking procedure, SOS and the chain of survival Do Not Attempt Resuscitation (DNAR) is also discussed. R2 Immediate life support Registered Nurses, Doctors, Dentists and Cardiac Technicians. To provide ABCDE assessment, basic life support, simple airway management and safe defibrillation (manual and/or AED) enabling the management of patients in cardiac arrest until arrival of the Medical Emergency Team and to participate as a member of that team. A one day course consisting of lectures and practical sessions. This course is accredited by Resus Council (UK). Annual update required by attending ILS re-certification course. R3 Advanced life support This course is designed for healthcare professionals who will be expected to apply advanced life support in their clinical role. Appropriate participants include Doctors and Nurses working in critical care areas (e.g. A&E, CCU, ICU, HDU, operating theatres, medical admissions units) or on the cardiac arrest/ medical emergency team and paramedics. All applicants should hold a current clinical appointment and professional healthcare qualification. To prepare senior members of a multi-disciplinary team to manage peri-arrest situations and to treat the patient until transfer to a critical care area. The complexity and management of cardiac arrest situations, including decision making and effective communication with the team and the patients relatives, is included. Two day course consisting of lectures, teaching scenarios, demonstrations, skill stations, group discussions and workshops. Continuous assessments with further practical formal assessment and multiple choice questions paper on the second day. This course is accredited by Resus Council (UK). R5 Paediatric basic life support All Doctors, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals that have direct paediatric patient contact. To provide an assessment of the unconscious infant/child including assessment of airway, breathing and circulation. Skills required for performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, the use of simple bag valve mask and choking procedure. A lecture and a practical session. Annual update required. R6 Paediatric immediate life support All Nurses and Allied Health Professionals who have direct paediatric patient contact. To provide Paediatric Basic Life Support and skills in foreign body obstruction; airway management and ventilation; BLS with adjuncts, emergency circulatory access; fluid administration and medications; paediatric ALS algorithm and management of cardio-respiratory arrest; scenario practice and optional targeted training. To provide a look at how we can improve the recognition and treatment of the acutely ill adult patient. One day course consisting of lectures, group work and scenarios. This is a nationally recognised certificate. R9 Swindon Adult Trauma (SwAT) Doctors, Nursing staff, Paramedics and Emergency Care Practitioners in the Emergency Department and Doctors in Surgery and Orthopaedics. To provide the underlying principles required for the management of adult trauma, with an emphasis on good communication and team work. One day course consisting of lectures, interactive workshops and scenarios. R10 IMPACT course (Ill Medical Patient Acute Care and Treatment) Doctors and Nursing staff in all specialities. To teach key skills in acute medicine such as chest pain management, chest drain insertion, non invasive ventilation, blood gas and ECG interpretation. Two day course consisting of lectures, interactive workshops and scenarios. This course is supported by all Medical Colleges, the Royal College of Anaesthetists as well as the Resus Council (UK) and Intensive Care Society. R11 First Aid at Work The Academy will shortly be running full Health and Safety Executive (HSE) approved First Aid at Work courses, in accordance with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations Who is it for? This course can be adapted to suit a particular audience, for example, clerical or engineering staff. Once qualified, holders of this First Aid at Work certificate can be used as First Aiders in the workplace in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act The First Aid at Work Syllabus Includes: first aid priorities managing incidents basic life support examination of a casualty unconsciousness control of bleeding fractures burns and scalds common illnesses heart attacks eye injuries dressings recording and reporting regulations first aid kits.
