Launched at the hospital about six months ago, CARE (Connect, Acknowledge, Recognize, Engage) is a project to train caregivers in the Swedish Emergency Department (ED) how to better connect with patients and enhance patient satisfaction. Part of the training has involved discussing things we can do to support the nursing staff so that they feel engaged, feel that their voices are heard and take that feeling and transfer it to the patient, says Heather Gutierrez, R.N., ED clinical nurse manager. Swedish is the first hospital in the Swedish/Providence systems to offer CARE training. The ED team was asked by Organizational Development at Providence to take part in the CARE pilot project. In 2013, the ED team increased Press Ganey patient satisfaction scores more than any other ED in the Swedish/Providence systems, says Heather. To ensure we continue to receive positive scores, CARE training is helping to show us how to sustain new ED policies and systems we have in place. Save the Date Quarterly Medical Staff Meeting Tuesday, April 21 Auditoriums A-C 5:30 p.m. dinner; 6 p.m. meeting Dinner provided. RSVP for dinner by Friday, April 17 The training involves twice monthly meetings with members of Organizational Development and staff members from the Swedish ED, hospital laboratory, patient registration and imaging all departments active in the care of emergency patients. Encouragement of nurse-leader rounding, use of whiteboards in patient rooms for communication between nurses, providers and patients, and how to use not only your head, but your heart when talking to patients have been among training topics. At the last meeting we concentrated on how thinking with your heart and acting with your heart translates to good patient care, Heather says. You want the patient to feel that they re heard and know that you care about them and want them to have a good experience. Acknowledging good work by caregivers is also an important. Staff is encouraged to write positive comments about coworkers on star-shaped cards which are posted on a Please see CARE on page 4 inside

3 Doctors Day Celebration March 30 National Doctors Day was officially designated as a national day of recognition in 1990 to honor physicians. In recognition of the talented medical staff at Swedish, we invite physicians to attend this year s Doctors Day celebration at Swedish. On Monday, March 30, a special buffet lunch will be served in the hospital s physicians lounge located on the third floor from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. In addition to lunch, messages of appreciation from hospital staff will be shared with physicians. Swedish physicians consistently apply their skills and talents in a way that makes lifechanging and often life-sustaining differences in the health of patients and their families. Thank you for your uncompromising commitment and dedication to the health and well -being of patients, and to the community served by Swedish. Participation in March for Babies Honored Pictured left: Sarah Zabel, vice president of operations at Swedish, accepts the hospital s award for the third highest amount raised by a corporate sponsor in Snohomish County for the 2014 March for Babies Walk held at. This year s walk is April 25 in Everett. Look for details on how to register or make a donation to this year s walk in an upcoming issue of Vital Signs. Support this year s Swedish March for Babies team at National Healthcare Decisions Day at Swedish National Healthcare Decisions Day is Thursday, April 16. This is a day to inspire, educate and empower the public and health-care providers about the importance of advance care planning. Events planned at Swedish include information sessions focused on the benefits of advance care planning and how to begin these difficult but important conversations. We will also have staffed information tables stocked with forms and brochures on the first floor of the hospital by the Eye Center elevators and in the cafeteria. At the end of each month, a random drawing of the stars is held and the caregiver named on the star that s drawn wins a free coffee. It s a nice gesture to make sure staff feels appreciated, explains Heather. According to Heather, CARE training will be ongoing and if it s successful at Swedish, the project may be rolled out to other Swedish/Providence campuses. I think the training concept is great reminding caregivers why we re in health care; to care for patients and to make sure they know we care, Heather says. 5 Register Now for Destination Swedish April 21 An estimated 43.7 million adults in the United States suffered from a mental illness in the past year nearly 20 percent of the population. And 1 in 5 children in the U.S., either currently or at some point during their life, have had a seriously debilitating mental disorder. Too often, the needs of these individuals with mental health concerns go unmet until their conditions worsen. The resulting increased problems and costs can become a serious burden for patients, families and the community. At this year s Destination Swedish fundraising luncheon, Tuesday, April 21 at noon at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel, you ll have the opportunity to help provide the start-up costs needed to embed mental health counselors in our primary care clinics. This will allow convenient, same-day care and help reduce the barriers many patients face when seeking care for their mental health concerns. Online registration and table captain information is available now at destination-swedish. Caregiver Forum Join Jennifer Graves, chief executive at Swedish, for a caregiver forum on Wednesday, April 15 from 7:30-8:30 a.m. in auditoriums A-C at Swedish.
