2 MOST RECENTLY ADDED OPPORTUNITIES RSVP- Retired and Senior Volunteer Program 55+ Volunteers - If you are 55+, this is your invitation to volunteer service! Start with a discussion about your individual interests, skills and time available to volunteer. Explore the possibilities for service through a wide variety of local agencies, including many projects with limited or flexible commitments. End with a rewarding volunteer experience that fits perfectly into your lifestyle and comes with some additional perks because you re experienced at life! One-time events 55+ RSVP volunteers are asked to assist for a couple hours at a variety of onetime events in the community. From ticket taking at a performance to helping at a blood drive, from a school book sale to counting patrons at the public library. Pick and choose what fits for you. Warm Fuzzy Creators It s been a long, cold winter and the excess of handmade mittens for youth in need have been depleted. Would you enjoy knitting or crocheting mittens for school age youth? RSVP Warm Fuzzy volunteers create mittens year round to be distributed in the fall and winter to area agencies that work with youth. Use up your own excess yarn or get some from RSVP when it is available. (3/15) Abba Pregnancy Resource Center Office/Donation Assistant Help Abba Pregnancy Resource Center in Elk River with a variety of office and organization tasks, light general cleaning, labeling brochures & assisting with mailings. Breaking down boxes for recycling & exterior yard spring, summer and fall cleanup work. Needed on a weekly basis for 2-3 hours. One or more people can help with these tasks. (3/15) CAER Outreach Volunteers - CAER, the Food Shelf based in Elk River is looking for volunteers to help with a monthly outreach program taking food to the senior apartments in Zimmerman. Once per month 1-2 volunteers would do one of three tasks: Sign up clients in Zimmerman for that month and pick up client grocery request forms; serve at CAER to fill the grocery requests prior to delivery date; accompany staff to distribute the requests on delivery date. (3/15) Senior Dining Big Lake Kitchen Assistant - Help to serve weekday, noon meals to Big Lake area senior citizens. Meal servers needed in the Senior Dining kitchen in Big Lake on various days, 2-4 times per month. Time commitment for this position is 10:30 AM 12:30 PM on the scheduled day. (2/15) Meals on Wheels - Deliver noon meals to those unable to cook a nutritious meal for themselves. About one hour at midday. Meal delivery drivers needed on various weekdays. Midday time commitment of about 1 hour, 2-4 days per month. Volunteers can be individuals who deliver on scheduled days, or businesses/groups willing to offer a rotation of employees/members for delivery. (2/15) Senior Dining Zimmerman Meals on Wheels - Deliver noon meals to those unable to cook a nutritious meal for themselves. Meal delivery drivers needed on Wednesdays 11 AM Noon 2-4 times per month. Volunteers can be individuals who deliver on scheduled days, or businesses/groups willing to offer a rotation of employees/members for delivery. (2/15) 2

3 Angels On Main - Adult Day Services Share the Fun!- Angels on Main plans many day trips for their clients to places such as river boat rides, garden tours, or out to lunch. These trips are always more fun with volunteers along to assist the clients as an escort or simply visiting while staff tends to the needs of other clients. Assist with one or more trips per month, as your schedule allows. (2/15) True Friends Summer Friends at Camp Friendship/Camp Courage - True Friends is a non-profit organization that provides summer camp opportunities children and adults with disabilities (learning, physical, and/or developmental). Campers participate in fun camp activities adapted for every ability level, including fishing, bonfires, music, nature, and hayrides. Adult volunteers work in assigned cabins assisting staff and campers in a variety of camp activities including: arts & crafts, music, campfires, camping, boating, canoeing, swimming, and so much more! Youth volunteers (Camp Friendship only - ages 14-17) will be in our Leaders-in-Training program where half the day will be spent in cabins assisting with meal times and various camp activities. The other half with fellow volunteers learning about the population we serve, and participating in fun team building exercises. No previous experience with the population is necessary. True Friends will provide training, as well as housing and meals for the camp week. Groups welcome. Sherburne County Health and Human Service Transportation Drive Sherburne County Health and Human Service clients who have no other way to get to their doctor, employment, counseling or other necessary appointments. Drivers use their own cars and are notified in advance. Days and times are flexible. Mileage and start-up costs are reimbursed. Service depends on criminal background check, doctor s permission, and a personal interview. Drivers especially needed from the Becker/St. Cloud area who are willing to make trips to the Twin Cities metro area. (2/15) Guardian Angels Care Center Hospitality Assistant Offer reading material, word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, a deck of cards, a room visit or a visit in the coffee/gift shop to Guardian Angels Care Center residents recovering from a surgery, injury or illness on the Rehabilitation Unit. Tues, Wed or Fri 3:00-4:30. (2/15) Craft Assistant Assist Guardian Angels Care Center residents with fun crafts by helping residents cut, glue and assemble crafts. Many residents can use a little extra help since arthritis in the hands can make it difficult to create something that needs dexterity. Staff will supply the ideas and materials. Need the 2nd & 4th Wednesday s 1:15-2:45. (2/15) Coffee/Gift Shop - Guardian Angels Care Center in Elk River has openings for volunteers to staff their coffee and gift shop. A fun way to provide gifts, refreshments and friendly conversation to residents, visitors, and staff! The shop is open 7 days per week. Volunteers serve in shifts 1-4 times per month and receive a discount in the shop on their days of service. Especially needed Fridays 9:30 1:00 or 1:00 5:00; Thurs 1:00 5:00; Substitutes for any available shift. (2/15) Guardian Angels Elim Hospice Hospice Volunteer Guardian Angels Elim Hospice is looking for volunteers to join our Hospice Team the Buffalo, Monticello, and Princeton/Cambridge areas! Share your gifts of listening, friendship, emotional support, or music with our patients and families facing the end of life. If you are a veteran, please consider volunteering as Guardian Angels Elim Hospice participates in the We Honor Veterans program. If your pet is therapy certified, we would love to have you on our team. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Training completed in April 2015 so contact us now to get started! 4 Surgical Services Waiting Room Host(ess) Greet patients and family members when they arrive for surgery. Explain the process and tracking options, escort guests and offer activities as needed. Perform projects for surgical staff as assigned. Volunteers needed for a variety of shifts between 7 AM-8 PM, Monday-Friday. (2/15) Hospital Information Desk Be the initial, warm greeter for patients and visitors to Fairview Northland Medical Center in Princeton. Answer questions, give directions, deliver flowers and gifts, provide escort, as necessary. 2-4 hour shifts: AM, PM, evenings; all days. (2/15) City of Elk River Fix-It Mentor - Are you someone who enjoys fixing broken things so they are usable again? Are you handy with a soldering iron or sewing machine? Can you do electrical, small appliance or minor furniture repair? If any of that is true for you perhaps you d be perfect as a volunteer Fix-It Mentor. Volunteers with any of these skills are needed to provide guidance for community members who want to learn how to fix their own broken items, but need assistance to do it. Be part of the April 2015 Elk River Fix-It clinic. Join others to spare the landfill and save the earth! (2/15) Open Doors for Youth - Open Doors for Youth is a drop-in resource center where youth experiencing homelessness can fulfil basic needs and acquire resources to become self-sufficient. Immediate needs such as clothing, food and hygiene supplies, as well as essential services such as medical, legal, education and employment support will be available. Drop-In Center On-Site Team The On-Site Team works directly with young people stopping by the resource center. Volunteers help to provide a safe, warm and welcoming atmosphere for the youth who visit. Duties include listening to youth, providing referral information for services, distributing needed goods and assisting with various programmed activities. Drop-in hours are 2-6pm Monday - Friday. (Full shift - l:45-6:15pm; Half shift - l:45-4:15pm or 4-6:15pm) (1/15) Donations Team - Are you a good organizer? Do you like things neat and in their place? If so, this is your team! The Donation Team is responsible for managing the Donations Room which contains clothing, duffle bags, hygiene products and the food pantry. They are also responsible for keeping the donation request list current and posted. This team will coordinate with organizations who wish to conduct specific supply drives for Open Doors. Minimum of 3 volunteer hours service per month. Time can be scheduled from 12-l:45pm, or 6:15-8pm. (1/15) Fund Development Team - Do you enjoy putting the "fun" in fundraising? Do you have professional skills in grant-writing, or marketing? This vital team is responsible for keeping our doors open for business with financial support from grants, businesses, organizations, individuals and special events. (1/15) Meal Team - It is our intent to provide a meal for youth at the facility. It is the hope that meal donations will be made by local restaurants on a rotating basis. Volunteer will be needed between 4:00 and 5:00 pm to transport the donations from the restaurant to the center. (1/15) Senior Dining Elk River Noon Meal Delivery- Deliver noon meals to those unable to cook a nutritious meal for themselves in the Elk River area. It takes about an hour at midday to makes someone s entire day brighter! Volunteers can be individuals who deliver on scheduled days, or businesses/groups willing to offer a rotation of employees/members for delivery. Regular drivers and subs are needed, especially in the winter months. (12/14) Wash Dishes for Smiles Volunteers needed to collect up many friendly greetings and smiles from diners in exchange for assisting to clean up after a noon, weekday meal at the Elk River Senior Dining Site. Along with meeting new friends, volunteers use a commercial dishwasher to 4

5 wash dishes from the meal. Dishwashers work from 11 AM 1 PM on a team of three volunteers per day. Needed Mondays or Thursdays through April (12/14) Great River Area Faith in Action The Gathering Great River Area Faith in Action (FIA) is seeking volunteers to help with a fun, social respite group called The Gathering. It is held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month located in Becker. This is a place for caregivers to bring their loved ones, so they can have time for appointments, and sometime for themselves. Come be a light in your community! (12/14) Sherburne County Sheriff s Office Bailiff Assistant Be present and available in a courtroom at the Sherburne County Government Center to deliver documents within the building to and from the court and perform other clerical functions. Provide an escort to those attending court (who are not in custody) to other areas of court services, such as the cashier or the probation department. Volunteer may also serve in the court check-in area to direct those reporting for court and relay messages among court staff. Volunteers are needed to serve one full day per week. Training, uniform shirts and lunch provided. Applications are being taken now for future openings. 55+ preferred. (12/14) CHILDREN & YOUTH ACTIVITIES Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central MN Youth Mentor - Big Brothers Big Sisters is a 1:1 youth mentoring organization that reaches out to children facing adversity by providing them with a caring, qualified volunteer mentor. Mentors meet with their Littles three to four times a month. Matches enjoy playing board games, bowling, going to movies, doing arts & crafts, playing sports, fishing, and many other fun activities. Serving Stearns, Sherburne, Morrison, Benton and the upper tier of Wright County. Opportunities to be a Big Brother, Big Sister, Big Couple or Big Family. (9/14) Reader s Theatre * See entry also in Education - Children & Youth Reading With Gusto! Use your expressive voice and smiling face to demonstrate to young children just how important and fun reading can be! Readers will do reading events as a group in local elementary schools as requested. Must be available for daytime practices 1-2 times per month and events 2-4 times per month. Two Sherburne County groups one based in Becker, one in Elk River. (8/14) Rivers of Hope Play Time - Rivers of Hope, a support center for those dealing with domestic violence, is seeking volunteers to play with and supervise children in a nursery while their parent(s) attend a support group in the same building. One or more evenings per month from 6:15 8:15 PM. Needed Tuesdays in Elk River and Thursdays in Buffalo. Permission for Rivers Of Hope to conduct a criminal background check is required. 6 Sherburne County Health and Human Services Public Health Preparedness Mental Health Volunteer - Assist Sherburne County Health and Human Services as they plan for any potential public health emergency. Use your experience as a mental health professional to serve on a diverse planning committee which meets four times per year for planning meetings. Mental Health Professionals are also needed to register for availability to respond in the event of an actual public health emergency in Sherburne County. (5/14) $ AARP Tax Counseling ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY Tax Preparation Assistant - Assist those with low income, disabilities and the elderly to prepare their taxes. Training and materials provided by AARP in Nov and Dec each year. Five days of training and testing in Jan will prepare volunteers for the following tax season. Most taxes are e- filed at a public location. Reimbursements provided. (8/14) EDUCATION ADULT & COMMUNITY Metro North Adult Literacy Adult Basic Education Classroom Assistant- Assist adults in Elk River who are learning to read, working on their GED certification or learning English as a second language. Volunteer works along with classroom instructor at the Handke Family Center. Volunteers assist with a variety of topics, including reading, math, science or social studies. 2-3 hours per week, day or evening, following training. Volunteers also needed at other ABE sites in the northern metro region, including Ramsey and Anoka. Orientation and training provided by Metro North Literacy. (9/14) Adult Basic Education Clerical Assistant- Assist the Adult Basic Education instructor at Handke Family Center in Elk River to process a variety of clerical projects which may include filing, copying, word processing, data entry and organization of materials. Volunteer needs to be a selfstarter and able to quickly interpret how a task can best be done. 2-3 hours per week, Fri AM, Wed/Thurs PM or Tues eve best. (9/14) EDUCATION CHILDREN & YOUTH Central Minnesota Foster Grandparent Program Foster Grandparent- Make a Difference in the Life of a Child! Experience every day the love and wonder of children eager to tell you their special stories! At local schools or day care centers, Foster Grandparents become friends and mentors to children. They connect with kids by sharing experiences, supporting learning, and offering encouragement. Serve 15 or more hours per week. Training, benefits and tax-free stipend ($2.65 per hour). (8/14) Sherburne County Area Schools Elementary Student Support The earlier educators can identify young students at risk of falling behind in their education and match them with others who can give them extra support, the better. There are several areas where elementary students will need extra help this school year. Just a few hours a week spent with a volunteer can make a big difference to a child s success. Some sample positions are: help students practice math facts; read 1:1 with struggling readers; mentor at-risk students. Needs vary by school. (8/14) Westwood Elementary School Zimmerman Math Fact Practice Serve on a one-to-one basis with students in grades 3-5 at Westwood Elementary School in Zimmerman who need some caring, individual attention to practice math facts. As little as 2 hours/wk. (9/14) Read-With-Me - Serve on a one-to-one basis with students in grades 3-5 at Westwood Elementary School in Zimmerman who needs some caring, individual attention to practice reading skills. Serve 2-3 days/week about 2 hours/day. (9/14) Student Mentor Visit on a one-to-one basis with a student at Westwood Elementary School in Zimmerman who is in need of extra attention from a caring adult. May involve working on classroom skills. May also simply be a friendly visit for the day if that best meets the child s needs. 1-2 days/week for 1 hour/day/student. Volunteer could visit more than one student, if desired. (9/14) ENVIRONMENT & OUTDOORS Dist 728 Early Childhood Family Education Garden With a Group - In the gardening months, the Handke Center in Elk River is needs garden lovers to help maintain the Nature Classroom gardens. The group of willing volunteers will be notified of 1-2 work group gatherings each month. Each gathering will be for 2-3 hours. Attend the sessions that work well for you. Gardens consist primarily of perennial flowers. Bring your favorite garden gloves and a kneeling pad if you like. Direction about garden plans provided. (6/14) Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge Think Outdoors! Think Wildlife! Do you love the outdoors? Are you a wildlife watcher native plant supporter? If so, get ready for spring by offering to volunteer at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. Volunteer positions include Wildlife Interpreter, Litter Pick-Up, Outdoor Classroom Leader. Seed Collector, Wildflower Tender, Education Assistant, Photographer and more. Trainings are held each April/May. Outdoor Classroom Leader Share your love of the outdoors with students in grades Kindergarten through 5 th grade at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge in Sherburne County. When school groups visit the Refuge, volunteers are needed to staff an outdoor learning station and share the topic information with students as they rotate into the area, or while the volunteer escorts them through. Volunteers needed primarily in the fall and spring for about 3 hours 1-2 times per month. All topics, materials and training provided. (8/14) Event Planning/Promotion Do you enjoy putting your planning and organization talents to use? Do you value our local natural resources and wildlife? The Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge holds many free, educational events for both adults and children each year. From 7

8 Migratory Bird Day to Butterfly Tours, from the spring Celebration of Nature to the Christmas Bird Count. These events need additional volunteers willing to attend to the details of planning and promotion. Staff at the Refuge will be available to give guidance, direction and a historical perspective on past events. (8/14) Wildlife Interpreter Do you love the outdoors? Are you a bird watcher? Would you like to encourage others to see the joy in nature? If so, come spend 3 hours per week at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge doing just that. Volunteers should have some knowledge of birds, good communication skills and the ability to help a variety of people visiting the Refuge. (8/14) Invasive Plant Work Crew Volunteers work in teams for the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge to remove invasive plants such as buckthorn from the refuge. Training given on plant identification. Work sessions average 3 hours, one time per month June - October. (8/14) Wildflower Gardener Nurture a 3 X 15 plot at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. Weed and water plot weekly on a flexible schedule. Watch the flowers grow, bloom and produce seed. Harvest the seed for replanting on the Refuge to spread the beauty! (8/14) Litter Ridder Do you enjoy walking in the outdoors? Consider helping Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge be clear from litter by adopting an area of the refuge in which to do litter pickup. Your commitment can be during spring, summer or fall on an annual or one time basis. You may also commit to monthly clean up on a year round basis. Choose a section of road, a trail, a fishing area, a parking area, a river, or an information kiosk. Can be done individually or in groups.(8/14) Seed Collector Assist in the collection of native, flowering seeds or grasses growing on the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. Training provided. Flexible schedule. Individuals or small groups. 1 2 hours, twice per month, June September. (8/14) Special Events Assistant Do you enjoy the fun of a festival? Assist with one of the special events offered at Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. Serve on the planning committee for in depth involvement, or simply help out for a couple hours at the festival itself. Activities needing helpers include nature crafts, parking, hospitality, lunch, and snowshoe check-out, just to name a few. (8/14) Data Entry/Clerical Assistant Volunteers will either help with general clerical activities, such as copying, filing, mailings or data entry. Data entry requires a comfort level with computer operation and attention to detail. Volunteers are scheduled on an as-needed basis. (8/14) Environmental Education Program Volunteer Work as an leader with groups of students that wish to learn more about the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge either on the refuge or in the classroom. Good communication skills, enthusiasm about the refuge s plants and wildlife, and teaching experience are required. Group leader assistants are also needed. Serve on as asneeded basis. (8/14) News Assistant Scan local newspapers for articles concerning the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge and clip the articles to be given to the refuge staff for history. (8/14) Photography Assistant Take digital photography of all aspects of the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge plants and animals, landscapes, visitors and special events. Volunteers use their own camera and give the photos to refuge staff to be used for Refuge promotion of many types. All activities will be coordinated with refuge staff. (8/14) Bird Count Volunteers At several times during the year, volunteers assist with estimating the population of a specific bird species on the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. Volunteers can be trained to help with the counts. Counts generally take just a few hours on one, specific date at a specific time. (8/14) Sherburne Soil and Water Conservation District 8

9 Community Tree Pruner - If you enjoy being outdoors, love trees and your community, this is an opportunity you need to check out. The cities of Becker, Big Lake, Elk River and Princeton are partnering with the Sherburne Soil & Water Conservation District and the U of M Tree Care Advocate Program on a pilot program that aids in increasing local capacity by working together and engaging citizens in community forestry. Citizen Pruners receive 8 hours of training in tree identification, biology, and pruning techniques. After attending training the volunteers will prune at "events" on public property with trainers present. 10 hours of service per volunteer per year required. (Volunteers pay $20 for the local U of M training.) Contact Sherburne SWCD for 2015 training dates. (8/14) Rain Gauge Reader Help the Sherburne Soil and Water Conservation District keep track of local rainfall amounts right from your backyard. Rain Gauge Readers needed in a variety of spots throughout Sherburne County. Call to see if you backyard is one of them. Training provided. (Esp. needed in Becker and southern Clear Lake Townships.) (8/14) Stream Monitor (Spring 2013) Assist the Sherburne Soil and Water Conservation District and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to gather data about water quality on a weekly basis from a stream crossing near you. Volunteer takes and observes a simple water sample from a designated location on a steam, then records and reports findings. Samples are generally taken from a bridge or culvert. April Sept. All training provided. (8/14) Lake Water Monitor (Spring 2013) Do you live on a like in Sherburne County? Or is there a lake that you frequent at least once per week? The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency needs volunteers to regularly monitor lake water quality on as many lakes as possible. June Sept. Training is provided. Contact Sherburne SWCD to see of you lake needs a monitor. (8/14) FOOD & CLOTHING SERVICES Big Lake Community Food Shelf Grant Writer Do you have experience with grant writing or grant reviews? Are you interested in helping those in need in the Big Lake area? The Big Lake Community Food Shelf would like assistance with grant writing when an opportunity to apply for funds for the food shelf comes up. Volunteer schedule and commitment to be determined by volunteer and food shelf director as grants need to be written. (9/14) CAER (Community Aide Elk River) Food Shelf Donation Transport CAER, the food shelf in Elk River, needs a weekly, early morning volunteer with a larger vehicle to pick up produce donations from one of three grocery store locations in Elk River. About a 1 hour per week time commitment before 9:00-9:30 AM. Needed Monday, Wednesday or Friday. (9/14) Freezer Rotation Assist CAER, the food shelf located in Elk River to ensure that frozen products are properly placed and rotated in all freezer locations. Help unload truck deliveries, sort and separate product by date. Tidy cooler. Dispose of expired items. Volunteer receives direction from the CAER Warehouse Manager. Volunteer should possess basic understanding of common warehouse practices and procedures, have the ability to lift 50 lbs, have a pleasant and compassionate manner, patience, problem solving ability, and be dependable. Volunteers needed for shifts on M-W-F, 9AM 3 PM. Training provided. (9/14) Inventory Redistribution - Assist CAER, the food shelf located in Elk River, to ensure that products for distribution are restocked in a timely and efficient manner. Sort, monitor and restock deliveries and donations following sound inventory rotation practices. Volunteer should possess basic understanding of common warehouse practices and procedures, have the ability to lift 50 9

10 lbs, have a pleasant and compassionate manner, patience, problem solving ability, and be dependable. Volunteers needed for shifts on M-W-F, 9AM 3 PM. Training provided. (9/14) GOVERNMENT & PUBLIC SAFETY Sherburne County Attorneys Office File Prep- Assist the Sherburne County Attorney s office by preparing old case files to be scanned into a computer. To prepare files volunteer will remove fasteners, check for documents that are unclear, make copies, and mount small papers on to a size that can be scanned. Hours are very flexible and can be served at any prearranged time M-F when the Government Center is opened. (9/14) Sherburne County Sheriff s Office Safe Roads Coalition Member Give your time and energy to contribute to the Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) initiative in Sherburne County. Offer to serve on the Sherburne County Sheriff s Office Safe Roads Coalition. Members of the coalition will meet 6 times over the next year. This group will plan and implement ways to educate the public about traffic safety. Help to preserve lives in the community by becoming active in this way to increase awareness of the issues involved in safe roads. Activities with patients may include helping with life reviews, memoirs, reading or listening to music together, preparing light meals, running errands, giving manicures, writing letters or making phone calls. Visit patients in their home or a care facility. Training, flexibility, ongoing support and education are offered to volunteers. Especially needed are veterans to share their time and talents with veteran patients, and volunteers certified in massage or pet therapy. Deliver mail within the hospital accurately and in a timely manner. Conduct medical supply inventory using a hand held scanner as directed. Remove expired products and enter any supply changes in a computer database. Attention to detail, comfort with computer operation and the ability to stand for the majority of a volunteer shift a must. Needed Monday and Friday afternoons. Volunteers are responsible for greeting patients, collecting information, gathering and filing paperwork, notifying staff of patient arrival and other clerical duties. Volunteer will complete some clerical, cleaning and errand tasks on the unit, as well. Needed for 2-4 hour shifts between 7 AM and 7 PM, all days. Must have an outgoing and compassionate personality, including strong communications skills. Must be willing and able to be responsive and sensitive to each patient s needs. Volunteers must be able to demonstrate proper technique after training and have the ability to stand and perform massage accurately for the time needed. A variety of times are available. Do this creative service in your own home at your own pace.( 10/14) Infusion Therapy Volunteer Greet patients, give directions, tidy waiting area and treatment rooms, assist with patient comfort items, run department errands and perform clerical tasks in the Infusion Therapy Department at Fairview Northland Medical Center. (10/14) Heartland Home Care and Hospice Hospice Volunteer There is a need for caring, compassionate volunteers, who are willing to spend time with Hospice patients and families, who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Volunteers provide the extra love and care the clients and their families need at this time in their lives. They offer support by running errands, staying with the patient so the family members can take a break, reading to patients, or holding their hand. Volunteers are not asked to become a family counselor, just a non-judgmental listener and friend. Orientation is provided. Volunteers donate as much or as little time as desired. (11/14) St. Croix Hospice Support. Comfort. Companionship. This describes St. Croix Hospice volunteers in how they provide kindness and respect to individuals and families dealing with the challenges of a lifelimiting or terminal illness. Volunteers visit patients and families by offering emotional support, listening skills, and often a quiet calm presence. St. Croix Hospice serves over 50 patients within a sixty (60) miles radius of St. Cloud and Brainerd areas. Comprehensive training provided; volunteer time/ visits are flexible. The following Volunteer opportunities are available: (9/14) Hospice Companionship - A companionship volunteer provides socialization, companionship and support to Hospice clients by visiting, looking at pictures together, encouraging the client to share their stories and memories, reading or playing music for the client, playing card games or sitting together quietly. Volunteers provide respite to the family taking care of their loved one at home by allowing them time to do errands, shop, go to appointments, or just have some quiet time to relax. Most visits range from 1-2 hours a week. (9/14) Pet Therapy Companions - Pet therapy has been shown to reduce physical and emotional pain. Certified therapy dogs bring joy to patients who love animals. We accept dogs that have gone through a training program such as Therapy Dogs International, Pet Partners and Therapy Dogs Incorporated. Visits are typically minutes in length. There is opportunity to visit with additional patients when residing in the same facility. When the pet can t stay in the shelter where its master is, a temporary home is needed for the pet. Be the temporary, caring home for a displaced pet while the master is involved with Great River Family Promise homeless services. Maximum foster time is 8 wks. All pet supplies provided. Call for details about the commitment and the specific pets needing homes. (9/14) Van Driver Help Great River Family Promise homeless day service center in Elk River in the early morning or late afternoon to drive the organization van (no special license required) to transport clients to and/or from a local host church where the clients spend the night. Volunteers also needed to transport clients to appointments during weekdays. Volunteers needed 7 days a week on a flexible basis as available and needed. (9/14) Day Center Volunteer Great River Family Promise, assisting local homeless families, needs volunteers to assist in the Day Center in Elk River. Volunteers will complete a variety of organizational and hospitality tasks, including phone reception, filing, data entry, organization of donations, copying and generally assisting guests participating in the Family Promise program. Volunteers must have good people skills, comfort/accuracy with computer data entry, and a willingness to be task flexible as the daily needs change. Shifts are scheduled for 2.5 hours each and are needed any day of the week. (9/14) Evening Substitute Be on a list for rotating host churches to call to fill in at the location where families are spending the night. Volunteers might help to prepare a meal, entertain the children or tidy up the church after the stay. (9/14) Family Mentor Receive training from Great River Family Promise to assist a homeless family with housing and job searches, skills to care for a home, or parenting skills or assistance. (9/14) Opportunity Partners Mentor - Opportunity Partners, supporting the choices for people with disabilities, invites volunteers to their Elk River LaVine Residence to spend time with the wonderful people they serve who live at that location. Mentor may visit on site or assist with community outings with staff. Come share a skill, an activity, or simply your time while you encourage and support the residents. Flexible times to fit volunteer schedule on weekday evenings or weekend days. (8/14) Senior Dining - Becker MEAL SERVICE/DELIVERY Meals on Wheels - Deliver noon meals to Becker/Clear Lake/Clearwater area senior citizens unable to cook a nutritious meal for themselves. Meal delivery drivers needed on various weekdays. Midday time commitment of about 1 hour, 2-4 days per month. Businesses/groups willing to offer a rotation of employees/members for these positions are welcome. (1/15) Kitchen Assistant - Help to serve weekday, noon meals to Becker area senior citizens. Breaking down boxes for recycling & exterior yard spring, summer and fall cleanup work. Needed on a weekly basis for 2-3 hours. One or more people can help with these tasks. (3/15) Samaritan Way Thrift Store Greeter - Greet customers at the front door. Welcome them to the store to tell them the sale of the day along with handing out any sale promotional item. When the customer leaves, thank customers and offer them a sale calendar for future use. (9/14) Fitting Room Attendant - Monitor fitting rooms. Remind customers of the five item/clothing-only limit for the rooms. Replace clothing customers do not want back into the appropriate place in the store. (9/14) Clothing Hanger - Hang, size and tag the clothing in the back room getting them ready for prices to be assigned. (9/14) Books Handler - Price books and put them place them on shelves in the store their correct location. Pull old books, as needed, as well as straighten books. (9/14) Merchandise Rotation and Tidying Systematically go through the store tidying merchandise that is to continue to stay on display and ensuring that it is in the appropriate location. Volunteer will also remove merchandise from display that is to be rotated out based on item tag colors. (9/14) Sherburne County Area United Way Campaign Ambassador Be a local United Way Champion by serving as the messenger to area businesses about the good they can make happen in the community through a workplace United Way campaign. Receive training from Sherburne County Area United Way (SCAUW) about the impact being made on the community and how many businesses are already supporting the effort. Work with the SCAUW Executive Director to target businesses for invitation to participate. Volunteer must possess excellent interpersonal, organizational and documentation skills. Volunteer will work independently at their own pace, but maintain regular contact with United Way. Estimated commitment is approx. 3-8 hours per week. (8/14) Sherburne History Center Tour Guide- Receive training from the Sherburne History Center about conducting tours on an on-call basis. Greatest need is for school tours, mostly elementary age children, both outdoors (e.g. on our Legacy Trail) or indoors (e.g. the exhibit gallery, hands on activities showing kids objects from our education collection). Must be friendly, outgoing and able to master information to be covered and make a clear presentation. Training provided. Tours are most common in the fall (September-October) and spring (May). (8/14) Historian/Researcher Serve under the direction of the Sherburne History Center staff to assist with specific research tasks, using resources from the history center library and archives. Answer specific research questions or carry out on-going research assignments. Ability to work 14

15 with minimal supervision using a variety of research materials including the internet. 4-8 regularly scheduled hours per week when the History Center is open. (8/14) Transcribing Assist the Sherburne History Center with transcribing recorded oral history interviews indo a word processing format. Volunteers can complete the task at the History Center location in Becker during the hours the center is open or may make arrangements to do the project at home using their own computer. (8/14) Collections Cataloger- Volunteer 3-4 hours per week or more as an artifact cataloger for the Sherburne History Center. This is a long-term volunteer position. Write descriptions of historic objects following specific guidelines. Ability to follow detailed instructions and handle artifacts with great care. Good eyesight and neat handwriting necessary, as well as attention to detail. Will have to wear nitrile gloves when handling collections objects. Training provided. (8/14) Event Host- Serve as an ambassador of the History Center at a variety of special events at the History Center or at community fairs or expos as your time allows. Duties may include greeting visitors, serving refreshments, giving directions or answering questions. (8/14) Computer Data Entry- Use your typing skills and basic knowledge of Word, Excel, or Access programs to enter History Center data in a variety of forms. Commitment is flexible during History Center hours. (8/14) Carpenter/Woodworking- Be on-call to assist with various projects at the History Center, including exhibit or education program prop creation and general maintenance of historic building exteriors. Some work may be done on-site, but home woodshop will be necessary for other projects. (8/14) SENIOR SERVICES Angels On Main - Adult Day Services Craft Group Coordinator- Suggest craft or beading ideas for client group at Angels on Main Adult Day Services. Gather supplies, demonstrate craft and help individuals with their project. Craft groups on Tuesday or Wednesday once per month. (9/14) Painting A room at Angels on Main Adult Day Services is in need of a fresh coat of paint. An individual or group is needed to freshen up the walls. Flexible schedule. All supplies provided. (9/14) Guy Trippin Are you an adult male with experience in health care or care giving? Your help is needed when Angels on Main Adult Day Services takes male clients on day trips. Hours are flexible throughout the year, 18 hour training required. Next training in summer/fall Volunteers set the radius from home they are willing to travel to do in-home counseling.
