Program Schedule Day One 8:30AM Registration for Day One 9:00 Norah Bostock Communicating Within an Inter-Professional Team It is well known that the best work gets done by teams. In hospitals and community settings, teams of inter-professionals work together to achieve patient outcomes. Although much lip service is paid to the success of teamwork, really effective teams are hard to find. This introductory session will focus on a cornerstone of inter-professional collaboration - communication in teams. Includes: Learn about your own communication style did you really say what you thought you said? Why do people seem to misinterpret some very simple ideas? Why must you use a range of communication styles if you are to really be understood? Learn the dynamics of team communication The power within your mind how to improve your listening skills 9:45 Elizabeth Obersteller Correctly Injecting Insulin: The Facts It has now been evidenced that many people incorrectly inject their insulin. This finding, has huge ramifications for those who are insulin dependant as well as nurses who may instruct patients on the correct use. This session reviews the correct injection technique for insulin. Includes: What is the correct method to use to inject insulin? If insulin is injected into muscles what are the consequences? What happens to glucose levels if it is injected incorrectly? How lypohypertrohy formed and what is are the impact on patient health? How frequently should a nurse check the technique of a person with diabetes who injects insulin? 10:45 Morning Tea 11:15 Rachel Longhurst How to Recognise a Blood Clot Blood clots are a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that must be immediately recognised. While much of the focus is often on prevention, nurses must also feel confident that they can assess the patient for the signs and symptoms of a blood clot. This session will go back to basics to help you understand how to perform a detailed assessment for DVT and PE so that you can immediately recognise them should they develop. Includes: What physical signs may indicate a DVT?

What changes in patient observations must make you immediately suspicious of a PE or DVT? What should I do after an assessment? How does immediate and accurate assessment improve patient outcomes? 12:00 Rachel Longhurst To Give or Not to Give: What s Changed About Oxygen? Oxygen therapy represents an area of clinical nursing where evidence has changed, therefore clinical practices must reflect this. No longer is oxygen always considered necessary or always safe. This session will bring you up to date on modern evidence about oxygen, including how oxygen therapy and various devices can be safely and correctly chosen. Includes: Understand the role of oxygen within the body Identify what factors affect oxygenation Understand hypoxia and what not enough oxygen is dangerous Understand terms respiratory distress, respiratory failure and how we treat these problems Understand the newer concept of hyperoxia and why too much oxygen is also dangerous 12:45PM Lunch Break 1:30 Anne Blunn What is Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease? Could you be at risk? Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease affects up to a third of the global population. While some degree of fat in the liver is normal, it only takes a small increase in percentage of fat for disease to occur. Many people with this disease have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cirrhosis and liver-related death. This insightful session will discuss: What are the types and causes of fatty liver disease? What are the multi-system effects of liver damage? Diagnosis and staging - how do these correlate to symptoms? What are recommended evidence-based treatment options? Prevention and lifestyle - is this the key? How can nurses provide education to people with fatty liver disease to improve health outcomes? 2:30 Zoë Routh Grace Under Fire: Staying Strong And Keeping Cool Working with difficult people sometimes results in conflict. This is likely to be detrimental to health, wellbeing and patient or client outcomes. Clear communication and a calm head when faced with hostility can help YOU manage conflict better. This interactive session looks at: Why people are difficult and what to do about it How to stand your ground and stay safe Three communication tips that defuse tension and build bridges Essential body language moves you need to know to stay calm and strong Hot buttons: how to keep yours from being triggered

3:30 Afternoon Tea 3:45 Zoë Routh Leadership Skills for the Age of Robots, Droids and Drones Robots and artificial intelligence are two technologies that will affect medical services in a profound way - first for patients, and second for service providers. If we are to lead through this disruption, we need to develop new leadership skills. In this dynamic session, you will: The latest trends that are are on the medical professional horizon Discover the key potential benefits (and pitfalls) that will rise with the machines Three emerging leadership skills that are fundamental to future workplace success 4:30 Close of Day One of Program Day Two 9:00AM Commencement of Day Two 9:00 Norah Bostock Time Management and Interruptions: How To Create That Cone of Silence! The pressure is on to get more done and then some, and then there are those pesky s that just keep on coming and the incessant interruptions. This session looks at principles of time management and how not managing your time is not an option. Includes: Understanding time management Tips on managing time - prioritising and streamlining What to do when people are always interrupting you How to say no! 9:45 Wendy Beckingham Prevention of Infection with Central Venous Access Devices Central venous access devices (CVADS) are essential in many acute care settings. However, their use in the community is also becoming more frequent. The type of catheter involved, its placement and management are essential to reduce the risk of complications such as thrombosis, as well as promote longevity of lines. This session reviews key considerations relating to the management of CVADs and includes: Review of devices - what goes where? 1. Peripheral IV devices 2. Central venous access devices (CVCs and PICCs) Catheter selection - choosing appropriate devices Complications - during and following insertion

Management principles - blood sampling, flushing, medication/fluid administration and dressing and line changes Common troubleshooting tips 10:45 Morning Tea 11:15 Dr Jenny Fothergill Therapeutic Communication and People with a Mental Illness People with mental health conditions may also experience difficulty communicating, particularly when they are unwell. Nurses who work in general settings may not have had formal education in how to communicate with someone who is depressed, experiencing hallucinations or highly anxious. However, all nurses need to feel comfortable speaking with people in these situations and with relatives and carers of those with a mental illness. This session looks at the very important considerations surrounding therapeutic communication in these challenging circumstances. Includes: Golden rules of therapeutic communication Cultural considerations to consider Body language - practical examples of what makes a difference Communicating when health literacy is limited or non-existent How much should I say? Disclosure and confidentiality with family members 12:15 Wendy Bonython The Use of Restraint: Whose Need is Being Met? If patients are confused or behaving aggressively, the use of restraints may be considered necessary. However, restraining a person using a device should only be used as a last resort. Only if the risks of not restraining are outweighed by injury or harm may restraint be considered. This session reviews the legal ramifications for the use of restraint and will include: What is the legal definition of restrictive practices? On whom can restraint be applied, and in what circumstance(s)? What types of restraint can be used? Is restraint an incident, and should it be documented? 1:15PM Lunch Break 2:00 Jane Kellett Weight Loss and Food The global weight loss industry generates billions of dollars, but this is not translated into billions of kilograms lost nor kept off by individuals. This session provides an overview of the evidence underpinning various approaches to weight loss. Includes: Dietary therapy: macronutrient content, carbohydrate and fat quality, nutrient density and amount of energy deficits

Other dietary weight loss strategies (e.g. meal timing, portion controlled meal replacements) Should an obese woman diet during pregnancy? Review of current clinical practice guidelines 3:00 Afternoon Tea 3:15 Norah Bostock Listen Up: How to Deal with Complaints No matter how good the provision of care or service, there will always be someone who is not satisfied. Conversely, if healthcare is under par, complaints are justified and will give a health provider an opportunity to address a problem about which they were not previously aware. In your position as a nurse, you may be the first person to receive the complaint. How you respond at this early stage has important ramifications. This session arms you with insights into the appropriate management of complaints. Includes: First line response - what to say and do initially How to know when to offer support - should you apologise? Reading the signs - when to listen, when to speak How to remain calm - appropriate use of language Follow up documentation and other actions required 4:00 Close of Day Two of Program Presenters Norah Bostock Norah Bostock is a highly qualified clinician and educator working in private practice in South Australia.
