2 Union GYN is now Union OB/GYN Important obstetrics services as well as gynecology care available in our community Women in Cecil County now have expanded access to comprehensive obstetric care close to home. The addition of two new physicians to the medical staff of Union Hospital makes these important health services available for expectant and new mothers. Meet our new OB/GYN physicians Jessica Nunez, MD, FACOG, received her medical degree with high honors from Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica. She completed her internship and residency at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore. Boardcertified in OB/GYN, Dr. Nunez has practiced at Donalsonville (Georgia) Hospital Women s Center for more than four years. Yi Li, MD, earned her medical degree at Beijing (China) Medical University and completed a residency in OB/GYN at Wayne State University in Detroit. She received her Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. She is boardcertified in OB/GYN and comes to our area from North Hills Medical Center in Greenville, S.C. Dr. Li joins the practice in August. UNION MULTI-SPECIALTY PRACTICES PRIMARY & SPECIALTY CARE PHYSICIANS Drs. Li and Nunez join Russell A. White, MD, FACOG, in practice at Union Obstetrics & Gynecology. Dr. White, who is board-certified, earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, in Richmond; completed a residency at Christiana Care Health Services in Newark, DE; and joined the medical staff at Union Hospital earlier this year. In addition, Anne Torna, MD, continues to provide gynecology services in our Elkton offices as well as a second location in Perryville. Board-certified, Dr. Torna received her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania and has been in practice for 26 years. Union Obstetrics & Gynecology is located in the Union Hospital Medical Professional Building at 111 West High Street, Suite 203, in Elkton. All of the physicians are accepting new patients and those wishing to transfer their care. For an appointment or more information, call (443) Start your family at the Maternal & Infant Center If you re expecting or you are ready to start a family, you ll want to consider many factors when choosing the right place to have your baby. Where can you receive the best medical care? Where will you find a team of professionals who care about you, your baby and your loved ones? Where can you find amenities such as private suites for labor, delivery and recovery? The Maternal & Infant Center at Union Hospital offers all of these benefits right here in Cecil County. All of our patient rooms are private, with special touches such as a whirlpool tub, rocking chair and bassinet and plenty of room for the new dad to stay, too. In addition, specially trained perinatal nurses will teach you how to care for your baby when you are ready to go home. To learn more about our educational programs for expectant and new parents, or make an appointment to tour the center, call (410)

3 New urgent care center is open Easy access, expert care for health problems You spend enough time waiting in your day-to-day activities. So when you have an urgent health concern, why wait? The Urgent Care Center at Principio, an affiliate of Union Hospital, offers prompt, expert treatment for non-emergency illnesses and injuries at a lower cost than what you would pay if you visit a hospital emergency room. Save time, money and hassle Urgent care is a better choice than the emergency room for non-emergency health problems. Here s why: Cost savings Urgent care costs less than emergency care. Many insurance plans will not pay for emergency care for minor illnesses and injuries, resulting in higher costs for you. Speed For many ailments, urgent care is usually faster than emergency care. In the ER, patients with more serious injuries get treated first. So, you may wait a long time before getting help for a sore throat or skin rash. Convenience Our urgent care center is open in the evenings and on weekends. So you can get care when your doctor s office is closed or busy. And you don t need an appointment. Need quick care close to home for a non-emergency illness or injury? Visit the new Urgent Care Center at Principio. IMPORTANT: For medical emergencies such as heart attack symptoms, serious injury or severe allergic reactions, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Principio Health Center 4863 Pulaski Highway, Suite 110 Perryville, MD (443) Hours: Monday Friday: 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Saturday Sunday: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Visit the Urgent Care Center at Principio for concerns such as: Allergic reactions Asthma attacks Cough and colds Ear infections Fever Headaches Minor burns and cuts Rashes Respiratory infections Sore throat Sports-related injuries Sprains and strains Urinary tract infections Vomiting and diarrhea 3

6 New providers bring new expertise and new perspectives to medical staff Union Hospital and Union Multi-Specialty Practices welcome a new physician, and a former registered nurse who is taking on a different role as a family nurse practioner, to our medical staff. Fahd Rahman, MD, Medical Oncology and Hematology Dr. Rahman is board-certified in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine and joins the medical staff at Union Hospital. Dr. Rahman earned his medical degree from the University of Peshawar in Pakistan, where he also completed internships in internal medicine and pediatric surgery. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Darby, PA, and a fellowship in hematology and medical oncology for the National Institutes of Health. As we expand our oncology program, our focus will be on guiding the department toward exceptional, precise, specialized care, Dr. Rahman said. It s a unique opportunity for me and an exciting experience for the community. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Rahman, call (410) Jackline Nanga, MSN, RN Jackline has been a registered nurse at Union Hospital since In 2014, she completed her Master of Science degree in nursing at Wilmington University and is now a family nurse practioner at Union Primary Care in Elkton. While she loved working as a registered nurse, Jackline wanted to advance her education and career. Being a family nurse practitioner is ideal for me, she said. I love that I can now take care of patients of all ages and be involved in their growth and health progress throughout their lives. To schedule an appointment with Jackline, call Union Primary Care of Elkton at (410) UNION MULTI-SPECIALTY PRACTICES PRIMARY & SPECIALTY CARE PHYSICIANS 6 Respite Care at Adult Day Services Exceptional care for your loved ones a welcome break for you I love caring for my mother, but once in a while I need a break. If only I had a day to get a few things done. Isn t it time for some me time? If you are a caregiver for an elderly or disabled loved one, you may have experienced feelings like these. After all, caregiving demands time, energy, focus and patience. That s why Adult Day Services at Union Hospital is proud to offer respite care for caregivers in our community. Respite care is temporary support for caregivers of people with chronic health conditions. It is an opportunity for caregivers to attend to personal concerns or just take a break. Our respite care program provides nutritious meals, group activities, supervision for personal care and medication reminders in a friendly environment staffed by caring professionals. Respite care offers significant benefits such as reduced caregiver stress and improved family relationships. Many caregivers like to set up regular respire care appointments, says Charlotte Temple, manager of Adult Day Services. That keeps the tension from building up and provides a break for caregivers to look forward to. For more information or to schedule respite care, please call (410) , adultday@uhcc.com or visit

7 Staying healthy at summer BBQs By Jenna Ferguson More often than not, a good old-fashioned summer cookout is not the healthiest affair. The typical menu consists of chips and dip, hot dogs, hamburgers and various desserts all of which are not the healthiest of choices. Although it s okay to indulge (everything in moderation,) you may not want to stray too far from your healthy eating regimen. So, how can you stay healthy at summer cookouts? Bring your own side dish or dessert Prepare your own healthy side dish or dessert. The host will appreciate the gesture, and you ll have a guaranteed healthy dish to put on your plate. Stay active Instead of sitting around with the other guests, get the group together for a game. Throw a Frisbee, set up a volleyball game or take a walk together after dinner. You ll burn off some of those appetizers and stir up some additional fun for the guests. Go for the greens When you re scanning the food table look for the salads, vegetables and fruits first. Try to load half of your plate with these healthier options. Be a grill master If you re hosting, you can easily throw some healthier alternatives on the grill. Pick up some veggie burgers or marinate chicken breasts in a salad dressing. Your guests will appreciate the variety of options, too! Chickpea Summer Salad For the salad: 1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, rinse and drained 1 (15 ounce) can yellow sweet corn, rinsed and drained 1 English cucumber, finely chopped 1 small pint red cherry tomatoes, sliced into halves ½ yellow sweet onion, finely diced For the dressing: 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 4 tablespoons lime juice 1 tablespoon cilantro paste or finely chopped fresh cilantro 1 tablespoon garlic, minced Add all salad ingredients to a large bowl. For the dressing, add all ingredients into a medium size bowl and whisk until all ingredients are well mixed. Pour dressing evenly over the salad and toss salad mixture gently to mix ingredients together. Refrigerate for 1-2 hours before serving. Jenna Ferguson is a graduate student at the University of Delaware working towards her Master s Degree in Health Promotion and a Health Coaching Certificate. Jenna will be completing her Health Coaching Practicum at Union Hospital this summer. She will be providing individual health coaching services for employees focusing on healthy lifestyle changes. Don t show up hungry Don t allow yourself to forget to eat before the cookout or tell yourself you want to save your appetite for the cookout. If you do, chances are you will end up overeating, gravitating toward unhealthy options and ultimately consuming more calories than you would have liked to. Below are examples of a healthier side dish and a healthier dessert for your BBQ. Easy Peach Blueberry Crisp For the filling: 4-5 peaches, sliced (peeled, if desired) 1 cup fresh blueberries 2 teaspoons cornstarch ¼ cup honey or maple syrup ¼ cup lemon juice (1 lemon) For the crisp topping: 1 cup rolled oats ½ cup almond meal/flour ¼ cup coconut sugar or brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon ¼ cup coconut oil, melted Preheat oven to 375 degrees and spray a 9-inch pie plate with a natural cooking spray. Combine all filling ingredients in a medium bowl, and combine all crisp topping ingredients in a medium bowl. Next, pour filling ingredients into pie plate and sprinkle the oat mixture over the top. Bake for 40 minutes, and then allow to cool slightly before spooning out. Serve warm and with vanilla ice cream or coconut cream, if desired. 7
