1 PROGRAM STRENGTHS PROGRAM: Health Care Assistant/Nursing Assistant DATE: 2/25/13 UNIT MISSION STATEMENT: To be responsive and accessible to those in our community that wish to learn more about providing basic health care. Our goal is to help students to complete certifications for professional health employment. STAFF PRESENT: PROGRAM STRENGTH Number 1 Sheila Fetherlin, Laura Jarry, Pat Roby and Eppie Rivas Our Faculty are highly qualified and knowledgeable 1. Our faculty are Registered nurses with Bachelor Degrees or Higher 2.Our faculty regularly attend professional development for both instruction and nursing practice. 3.Our faculty have real life work experience in the areas they teach PROGRAM STRENGTH Number 2 Our courses are in high demand 1. Nursing assistant students completing one semester courses are able to sit for the state competency exam to become Certified Nursing Assistants. 2. Phlebotomy & Electrocardiography students completing one semester are able to sit for National Certification in their respective specialty area with National Healthcareer Association. 3.Jobs are readily available in our community for the courses we provide PROGRAM STRENGTH Number 3 Provide education to our students in holistic care and in practice of ethics 1. Our students learn to provide care for patients as a whole; Physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs. 2. Our students learn to care for patients with moral courage; identifying and putting the patient needs first. 3.Our students learn to provide safety measures including infection control, body mechanics, and to observe for changes in patient condition. PROGRAM STRENGTH Number 4 Our program works well with a diverse group of learners 1. Our program works with students of all age ranges, and diverse cultures. 2. Our program reach out to diverse group of learners by attending various college sponsored recruitment fairs 3.Currently working with ABE program (IBEST) to build better educational foundations for college education advancement
2 PROGRAM CONCERNS PROGRAM: Health Care Assistant/Nursing Assistant DATE: 2/25/13 PROGRAM CONCERN Number 1 Health Care Assistant Certificate does not translate into the workforce as an employment option Possible Activities 1.Revise the Health Care Assistant Certificate to become Patient Care Tech Certificate 2.Develop patient care course to align with the PCT position hospitals in the community need filled. 3.Develop a cost effective medical assistant certification/associates degree to provide trained employees to the community. PROGRAM CONCERN Number 2 Laboratory space and teaching space Possible Activities 1.Request two practice labs and one lecture room 2.Be more creative with current scheduling of lab and lecture room 3.Click here to enter text. PROGRAM CONCERN Number 3 Quality Nursing Assistant Pass Rate increased to at least 90% on first attempt Possible Activities 1.Create Program Committee to review course content, books, and processes. 2.Streamline course requirements, documentation, and grading. 6 PROGRAM IMPROVEMENT OBJECTIVE Number 4 Collection of Pre-registration clinical documents Program Actions Planned to Achieve Objective 4 1.Update web pages with current information 2.research possibility of clinic to provide one stop shop for students to get requirements done at once 3.Do not let students register for courses until clinical paperwork is complete Do not know if we hold a clinic for shots, fingerprints, and drug screens if or what it would cost financially and in labor. & 1.Attend mango training work with nursing advisor to update web pages 2.Contact student services about holding a clinic and student health services and possibly the NMSU police 3.Register students for 104 only if have only one thing missing otherwise wait to register for 105 and 109 What Assessment Techniques/Tools will be Used to Determine Whether Objective 4 is Achieved? Use a rubric to assess web page completeness, successful clinic, and improved registration without having to chase students to get documentation, will use clinical logs to measure progress.
7 PROGRAM IMPROVEMENT OBJECTIVE Number 5 Increase program enrollment Program Actions Planned to Achieve Objective 5 1.Attend community recruitment events; assess health care providers current skilled employment needs 2.Update web site 3.Offer more workforce relevant courses more employment opportunities such as PCT and MA. May need more supplies, lab space and equipment for skills for MA and PCT in conjunction with already existing courses. May need more faculty to instruct in advanced skills. 1.Up dated web page 2.Submission and approval of new course curricula. 3.Begin new certification and Associate Degree courses & What Assessment Techniques/Tools will be Used to Determine Whether Objective 5 is Achieved? Courses in progress with enrolled students by 2015.
