Greenville Technical College Radiography Program Assessment August 2016 July 2017 Student Learning s Goal #1: The student will graduate with the necessary skills to function effectively as an entry-level radiographer. Assessment Time Responsible Instrument Frame Person 1A: The students will Average a 2.5 on a scale Radiation During Program demonstrate the application of of 1 3 on the radiation Protection Room 3 Faculty 2.93 radiation protection principles. protection rubric. Rubric Check off Use of : Met 1B: Students will demonstrate the ability to maintain the flow of patients in an assigned radiographic room. Use of : Met Average a 90% on items 8-11 of the Area Assessment Form for Room 3 at GMH. Items 8-11 of the Area Assessment Form. During Room 3 Check off Clinical Coordinator 95.22% 1C: The graduates will exhibit entry-level mastery of overall clinical skills. Of the returned graduates surveys, the overall rating of graduates overall preparation level will be 3.5 on a scale of 1-4. Exit Survey Q19-24 Annually Program Faculty Use of : Not met-students still feel like they are lacking in the ability to select exposure factors to achieve optimum radiographic techniques with minimum radiation exposure to the patient. In RAD 268 a technique chart project was added
Goal #2: The student will provide quality patient care. Assessment Instrument 2A: The student will be able to provide basic patient care to patients encountered in the radiology department. 2B: The student will demonstrate the necessary skills for general assessment of patients including vital signs, proper infection control and documentation. Of the returned exit surveys, the graduates will average of 3.25 on a scale of 1-4 on the patient care skills listed under Competency Self- Assessment (questions 22-24). Exit Survey questions under Competency Self- Assessment. (2017) Time Frame Annually Responsible Person Program faculty Use of : Met-We moved all the patient care labs to the beginning of the radiology program before the students ever go to clinic, so it will be interesting to see if this score improves next year. Will continue to monitor and see where improvements can be made. Use of : Met Average of 2.5 on a scale of 1-3 on the Nursing Rotation Assessment grade form. Nursing Rotation Assessment questions 1-6 Annually; completed during nursing rotation Clinical Faculty
Goal #3: The student will effectively communicate in a professional manner. Assessment Time Instrument Frame 3A: Students will be able to Annually communicate effectively in the RAD 268 clinical environment. The overall rating of the communication skills characteristics of students on the Room 3 Area Assessment will average 3.5 on a scale of on questions 5, 9 & 13. Room 3 Area Assessments, Q5, 9 & 13. Responsible Person Clinical Faculty Use of : Met - This is in their final semester, expect for their communication skill to be superb. We will continue to look for ways to increase our scores. 3B: Students will demonstrate professional verbal communication skills in taking a patient history. 95% of all students will pass the Patient History and Communication check-off on the first attempt. Patient History assessment questionnaire IVU 1, 17-25; Ba studies 1, Annually, RAD 175, RAD 268, or RAD 278 Faculty % Use of : Met - Students are required to get history on every simulation for RAD 130, RAD 136, and RAD 230. Also, while in clinic students are supposed to get a history on all patient that they x-ray. The history for IVP, BE, and upper GI are more in depth. 4
Goal #4: The student will demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills. Assessment Time Instrument Frame 4A: The student will apply theory and practical knowledge to given scenarios to determine best clinical solutions. Use of : Met Students will demonstrate the ability to problem solve given scenarios by averaging a 3.5 on a scale of 0-4 on the Clinical Critical Thinking Exercises Clinical Critical Thinking Exercise Rubric Annually - End of Fall Semester RAD 257 Responsible Person Clinical Coordinator 3.5 4B: The student will demonstrate the ability to accurately evaluate images for overall radiographic quality (positioning, technique and diagnostic acceptability). 100% of students will score 80% or higher on the Radiographic Quality Evaluation. Radiographic Quality Evaluation RAD 268 Faculty 76.5% Use of : For 4A-will give scenarios in the 2nd semester and then in the 4th semester (where this is assessed), to see if we can improve their critical thinking skills. Also, for 4A added a technique chart project in their final semester. 4B in RAD 114 dedicated an entire lab to exposure limits, and image evaluation and a practical on image evaluation as well. 4B-not met. Students continue to struggle with image analysis. In RAD 114 there is lab dedicated to just image analysis, also in RAD 136 and in RAD 230 the student evaluate each other images and receive feedback from the instructor. We added image analysis to the weekly clinical paperwork. Going forward in RAD 225, we will do an image analysis review towards the end of the course, then we will have the students take their RAD 278 final shortly after that review. We will continue to look at ways to improve Image Analysis. 5
Goal #5: The student will be able to model professional behaviors that are appropriate for the academic and healthcare environment. Assessment Time Responsible Instrument Frame Person 5A: The students will demonstrate professional behaviors. Clinical Faculty Use of : Met 5B: The student will evaluate the various opportunities for professional growth within Medical Imaging Sciences. Achieve an overall average rating of 3.50 on a scale of 1-4 on the affective characteristics evaluated on the Room 3 Area Assessment during the RAD 267 course. Students will average a 2.5 on a scale of 0-3 on the Professional Development Portfolios. Room 3 Area Assessment Questions 5, 8, 11, 12, & 13 (Class of 2017) Professional Development Portfolio Rubric During Room 3 Check off RAD 220 Semester of Phase II Course Instructor Use of : Met - Added a color coded flowchart for the students to follow and to use to check their work before submission.
