Proposal From: Brian Garrett, MSN, CRNA Title: Nurse Anesthesia Curriculum and Program of Study Proposed Changes Date: November 11, 2013 Vote: Department: For: 15 Against: 0 Abstain School: For: Against: Abstain Proposal: The current nurse anesthesia program of study (POS)/curriculum has been in place since the inception of the program. For the Spring 2014 the Nurse Anesthesia Program Faculty has developed and approved a new program of study and curriculum design. The current program of study has 13 theory courses and 5 practicum courses. The proposed program of study has 7 theory course and 3 seminars along with 6 practicum courses and one laboratory practicum. The specific proposal includes: Spring I Delete NURS 6710 Fundamental of Anesthesia and NURS 6712 Chemistry and Physics for Nurse Anesthesia and replace it with NURS 6716 Basic Principles of Nurse Anesthesia I. NURS 6712 Chemistry and Physics content will be incorporated into the new NURS 6716 Basics of Nurse Anesthesia and NURS 6717 Pharmacology for Nurse Anesthesia courses A standalone Chem & Physics 3 credit course in not warranted (the amount of content on these subjects required by our accrediting body does not warrant an entire course). Delete 2 three credit Pharmacology of Nurse Anesthesia Courses NURS 6721 (Summer 1) and NURS 6731 (Fall 1) and replace these with a four credit course NURS 6717 Pharmacology for Nurse Anesthesia in this semester (move the program to front loading and allow pharmacology content to be taught prior to the clinical courses). Add NURS 6718 Nurse Anesthesia Laboratory Practicum course (feedback is to add more simulation and lab experience to the program). Summer 1 Delete NURS 6720 Technology & Techniques for Nurse Anesthesia I and replace it with NURS 6726 Basic Principles of Nurse Anesthesia II (revised objectives and description). Delete NURS 6721 Pharmacology for Nurse Anesthesia I (replaced with the earlier 4 credit course, NURS 6717 Pharmacology for Nurse Anesthesia in Spring I). Add NURS 6729 Nurse Anesthesia Clinical Practicum I (students into clinical setting earlier in the program). Delete NURS 6730 Advanced Principles of Anesthesia I and replace with NURS 6736 Advanced Principles of Anesthesia I (new objectives and description).

Fall 1 Delete NURS 6731 Pharmacology for Nurse Anesthesia II (replaced with the earlier 4 credit course, NURS 6717 Pharmacology for Nurse Anesthesia in Spring I). Delete NURS 6735 Clinical Practicum I and replace with NURS 6739 Nurse Anesthesia Clinical Practicum II (new sequencing with advent of earlier clinical experience). Spring 2 Delete NURS 6740 Advanced Principles of Anesthesia II, replace with NURS 6746 Advanced Principles of Nurse Anesthesia II (new objectives and description). Delete NURS 6745 Clinical Practicum II and replace with NURS 6749 Nurse Anesthesia Clinical Practicum III. Add NURS 6747 Advanced Practice Anesthesia Nursing: The Role in Healthcare Delivery (move course up to assist with front loading). Summer 2 Delete NURS 6750 Advanced Principles of Anesthesia III (this content had previously been covered in Advanced Principles I and II and was stated as redundant). Delete NURS 6751 Professional Aspects of Nurse Anesthesia (replaced with NURS 6747 Advanced Practice Anesthesia Nursing: The Role in Healthcare Delivery). Delete NURS 6755 Clinical Practicum III, replace with NURS 6759 Advanced Clinical Practicum in Nurse Anesthesia I (includes 15 hours of seminar, calling these clinical courses Advanced since students will be performing specialty cases such as cardiac, OB, regional anesthesia, pediatrics). Fall 2 Delete NURS 6760 Anesthesia & Co-existing Disease and (NURS 6760 content will be covered in 45 hours of seminar in the three advanced clinical practicum courses and material in the course was also covered in the Advanced Principle of Nurse Anesthesia didactic courses). Delete NURS 6765 Clinical Practicum IV, replace with NURS 6769 Advanced Clinical Practicum in Nurse Anesthesia II (includes 15 hours of seminar). Spring 3 Delete NURS 6770 Transition to the Professional Role and NURS 6799 Clinical Capstone, (content in NURS 6770 and 6799 are covered in the new two credit replaced with NURS 6747 Advanced Practice Anesthesia Nursing: The Role in Healthcare Delivery. In the

past the certification exam covered professional aspects of nurse anesthesia but that content has been removed from the exam). Delete NURS 6775 Clinical Practicum V, replace with NURS 6779 Advanced Clinical Practicum in Nurse Anesthesia II (includes 15 hours of seminar). Proposed Program of Study and New Course Syllabi: see attached. Rationale: Each year, the nurse anesthesia program performs its own strategic assessment of strengths and weaknesses. From this assessment, changes are made to the program to respond to the feedback of the students, faculty and clinical partners. In addition, the program must demonstrate change based on feedback to the Council on Accreditation for Nurse Anesthesia Programs (aka COA). Data from the strategic planning session is embedded in this section. In addition, the program will receive an onsite visit from the COA in the spring of 2015 (paperwork for this visit must be completed by February 2015). This will be our initial 5 year accreditation visit. During this visit, the program must demonstrate that it meets the standards outlined in the COA manual. Below are several standards we are addressing with this change: C1. The program s curriculum builds upon prior nursing education and professional experiences, is congruent with the mission of the institution and is designed so that students benefit from the program. C3. The program sets forth the curriculum in a logical manner with sequential presentation of classroom and clinical experiences. C8. The program designs, when appropriate, an experimental/innovative curriculum that enables graduates to attain certification in the specialty. D1. The institution and/or program utilizes systematic evaluation processes to assess achievement in the following areas: a. The quality of the didactic, clinical and research curriculum. D2. The program has a written plan for continuous self-assessment that promotes program effectiveness, purposeful change and needed improvement. E1. The program evidences truth and accuracy in the following areas: advertising, student recruitment, admissions, academic calendars, program length, tuition and fees, travel requirements, catalogs, grading, representation of accreditation, and faculty accomplishments.

There are two compelling reasons for this change. The program is marketed as a front loaded program, however the current program of study (POS) in an integrated curriculum. Second students and clinical faculty provided feedback that having course work during the entire POS, students were missing key clinical learning opportunities and having difficulty preparing for board examination. Curriculum Comments More simulation Move to front loaded program Less redundancy of content Instruction of NA classes (who teaches them) Anatomy & physiology course for NA Integration of more seminar and less PPT Course evaluation system redundancy Lack of understanding of NA role by non nurse anesthesia faculty Integrate review course (i.e. Prodigy) earlier in program After careful review by the faculty and feedback from 2 cohorts of students, both the faculty and students were keenly aware of redundancy in the course work. Hence 3 didactic courses were deleted. The content is covered by adding two additional credits to the Basic Principles courses in Spring I and Summer I and removal of redundant content, and streamlining of extant content (anesthesia machine content, resp content) Based on feedback from students, they received minimal simulation laboratory simulation and laboratory experience during their program. This laboratory experience was extremely compresses and condensed in the summer I term. Multiple student cohorts have requested more laboratory and simulation experience earlier in their POS. Faculty also concurred with reasoning. Clinical case numbers and hours are lower than the national average. In the current POS, clinical course work does not start until the third semester. In the proposed POS clinical course work begins in the second semester. In addition, students will gain additional clinical time with the front loading of the curriculum. (last three terms students are in clinical five days per week, instead of 4 days per week in the current POS due to integrated course work).

AVERAGES: 2013 AVERAGES: National Averages Total Anes Cases Total Hours Anes Time Chemistry and Physics was a free standing 45 hour requirement for nurse anesthesia accreditation and certification. This content was already embedded in the NURS 6717 Pharmacology for Nurse Anesthesia course content and NURS 6716 Basics of Nurse Anesthesia I content. The new requirements for certification do not justify a free standing 3 credit hour course. Thus the content is placed in existing nurse anesthesia theory courses (Basic Principles of Nurse Anesthesia I & II). Certification Exam Requirements ( pdf) Applied chemistry, biochemistry, physics 1. Chemistry (taught in Basics course) a. Aqueous solutions and concentrations b. Acids, bases and salts 2. Biochemistry (taught in pharmacy course) a. Hepatic metabolism b. Cellular mechanisms for action c. Drug receptor interaction 3. Physics (taught with anesthesia machine content in Basics course) a. Units of measurement b. Gases and gas laws c. Solubility, diffusion and osmosis d. Pressure and fluid flow

e. Electricity and electrical safety f. Vaporization and humidification g. Measurement of oxygen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen ion Assessment: No changes Academic Support: No changes Staffing: The nurse anesthesia program is co-owned by Otterbein University and Grant Medical Center. The program relies on its own budget outside of both budget entities. All staffing compensation for the nurse anesthesia courses is paid by Grant Medical Center and will not affect faculty load or needs at Otterbein University. No changes in nurse anesthesia faculty workload will occur. Communication: Once approved, students will be informed of the course changes via . New curriculum plans will be distributed to students impacted by the change. The nurse anesthesia web-page will be revised so that prospective students are informed of the changes. Approval: Nurse anesthesia Faculty: Brian Garrett, MSN, CRNA Kacy Ballard, MSN, CRNA Greg Stockton, MSN, CRNA Department of Nursing Curriculum Committee Chair: Susan Butz, DNP, RN, CCRN Department of Nursing Faculty Meeting: All in favor
