2 Presenters Kayla Stewart Researcher, University of Otago Legal Issues Centre: Te Pokapū Take Ture Kayla has a background in both sociology and law and enjoys researching where these fields intersect. Kayla is passionate about social justice and social responsibility at a socio-legal research centre examining issues around access to NZ s justice system. She is also assisting on a pilot of a women s sexual violence prevention programme for university halls of residence. Dr Léonie Walker Principal researcher, NZ Nurses Organisation and Adjunct Professor, Graduate School of Nursing and Midwifery, Victoria University of Wellington Leonie s background is in applied immunology, health promotion and academic university research and teaching. Now leading a collaborative programme focusing on nursing workforce research. Léonie holds post-graduate qualifications in Health Science (health promotion) and Immunology. Dr Jill Clendon Nursing policy adviser and researcher, NZ Nurses Organisation Jill has a background in nursing education, teaching at undergraduate and post graduate levels, with specific interests in primary health care and nursing workforce issues. Jill s primary research focus is on workforce retention issues and the health of nurses. Amongst other qualifications, Jill holds a PhD in Nursing. Isobel Cairns School of Population Health, University of Auckland Isobel completed her Master of Public Health at the University of Auckland in 2016, with a thesis focusing on the ethical judgments made by health social workers when recording sensitive information in shared records. Her research interests include public health and applied ethics, the philosophy of mental health, and ethical issues relating to computers and information technology. Monique Jonas Senior Lecturer in ethics, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland. Monique is the Director of the Bachelor of Health Sciences, and has a Doctorate in Medical Ethics from Kings College London. Her research focuses on topics in bioethics, and questions relating to the role of the state in the family, and decision-making for children. She has been a member of the National Health Committee and is a new member of the National Ethics Advisory Committee. Katharine Wallis General practitioner and Senior Lecturer, Department of General Practice and Primary Health Care, University of Auckland Katharine developed an interest in health information privacy while studying for a Master of Bioethics & Health Law at University of Otago. Her other research interests include patient safety in primary care, safer prescribing for older people, and medical professional regulation. Katharine is currently a member of the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal, Medicines Adverse Reactions Committee, NZMA ethics committee, Maternal Mortality Working Group. Dr Sivadon Chaisiri Research Fellow, University of Waikato's Cyber Security Lab Sivadon works for STRATUS, the cyber security funded by MBIE, at the University of Waikato. He received his PhD degree in computer engineering from the Nanyang Technological University. Before pursuing the PhD, he worked in Sun Microsystems as a consultant and Thai universities as a computer science lecturer. He joined several R&D s such as cloud computing s funded by Singapore s A*STAR and cyber security s funded by Thailand s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission.
3 Dr Ryan Ko Head of Cyber Security Lab, University of Waikato Ryan Ko is a Senior Lecturer with the Computer Science department of the University of Waikato, New Zealand, and Affiliate Faculty Member of the Idaho State University National Information Assurance Training and Education Center (NIATEC), USA. Ryan established NZ s first dedicated Cyber Security Lab and Master of Cyber Security and serves as Science Leader of the $12.2 million MBIEfunded STRATUS research. Ryan contributes to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27 and cocreated the Data Privacy Matrix a global alignment of data privacy legislation. Alison Rahn PhD researcher, University of New England, Australia Alison is a practicing sex therapist based in Australia. She also has 20 years experience as an architect. She is currently undertaking a PhD on the research, 'Baby Boomer Sexuality: Exploring the Wants, Needs and Available Options for Partnered Individuals and Couples in Australian Residential Aged Care'. The is gathering data on the sexual and intimacy needs of partnered baby boomers and their expectations of residential aged care, should they become future customers. Several journal articles have already been published based on this research. Russell Burnard Government Chief Privacy Officer, New Zealand Russell began his role as the first GCPO at the Department of Internal Affairs in July He leads an all-of-government approach to privacy, and is responsible for 4 main functions: providing leadership, building capability, assurance and engagement with key stakeholders. He has previously been the change manager with the NZ Transport Agency. Before this Russell had a long career delivering regulatory and operational programmes in the public service. Anil John US Department of Homeland Security Anil is the Program Manager for the Identity Management and Data Privacy Research, Development and Transition Program in the Cyber Security Division for the Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency at the DHS Science and Technology Directorate. The Identity Management and Data Privacy Programs help government program managers with the public and private sector research and development expertise and resources needed to enhance the security and trustworthiness of their programs. Richman Wee Information Law and Policy Project Richman is managing the Law Foundation s newly created research initiative to adapt NZ s laws and policies for the Information Age. ILAPP aims to support NZ s growth, understanding and resilience for future digital competence. Richman was the manager and researcher for the Human Genome Research Project Law, Policy and Ethics for the Future that was led by the Faculty of Law at Otago University. He served as legal member and chair of the Multi-Region Ethics Committee, and was policy advisor for the Health Research Council. Gary Bulog General Manager, Office of the Privacy Commissioner Gary has been with OPC since 1997, and is based in Auckland. He manages all the Office's corporate service functions, such as HR, IT, finance, strategic and business planning and reporting and records management. He also oversees the office s administrative support. He holds an MBA from the University of Auckland and has previous experience as a management consultant and previously as a Director and shareholder in a start-up software company. Vanya Vida Office of the Privacy Commissioner, Auckland Vanya completed a Graduate Diploma in Law and is now working as Policy Adviser (Codes & International) at the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, in Auckland.
4 Becci Whitton Office of the Privacy Commissioner, Wellington Becci manages the Policy and Technology team at the Office of the Privacy Commissioner which provides advice to government and private sector agencies about any proposals or initiatives, including those involving new technologies that involve the use of personal information or affect people s privacy. Convenor: Blair Stewart, Assistant Commissioner (Auckland), Office of the Privacy Commissioner Blair s responsibilities at OPC are principally in the areas of international privacy, codes of practice and special s. One recent special has been the design and launch in 2015 of the Privacy Good Research Fund. This symposium was conceived as one means of publicly disseminating the fruits of the 1st funding round. Blair is also a member of the Asian Privacy Scholars Network and is NZ s delegate to the OECD SPDE and APEC ECSG DPS. Introducers to speakers: John Edwards, Privacy Commissioner John was appointed to the independent statutory position of Privacy Commissioner in February 2014 for a term of five years. He provides independent comment on significant personal information policies and issues. Prior to his appointment, John practiced law in Wellington for over 20 years specialising in information law while representing a wide range of public and private sector clients. Dr Nicole Moreham - School of Law, Victoria University of Wellington Nicole specialises in the law of privacy. She is the principal editor and contributor to leading English privacy work, The Law of Privacy and the Media and has published numerous articles on the protection of privacy in England and Wales, New Zealand, and Europe. Sean Goltz - School of Law, University of Waikato Sean s current research focus is virtual environments and gaming with a particular emphasis on children s rights and privacy. He is also interested in the areas of machine learning and big data. He believes in developing technology-driven legal tools and employing legal entrepreneurship to regulate the harmful effects of technology, and harness technology for the benefit of the law. Professor Paul Roth Faculty of Law, University of Otago Paul teaches in the areas of labour law, international human rights law, and information and data protection law. His principal areas of research interest are employment law and data protection law. Professor Ken Barker - University of Calgary, Canada Ken s current interests are in the area of Privacy Preserving Data Repositories. He is specifically interested in investigating how to build a privacy-aware database management system and then to determine ways to ensure privacy is preserved when it is being mined. Dr Catherine Cook, Massey University Catherine s main research platform is researching vulnerable and marginalised populations. Catherine is keen to use research findings to make pragmatic recommendations for clinical practice. As a secondary research focus she explores tertiary teaching and learning, including nursing post-graduate educational and workforcerelated issues. John Edwards, Privacy Commissioner John was appointed to the independent statutory position of Privacy Commissioner in February 2014 for a term of five years. Annelies Moens - Managing Director of Information Integrity Solutions Pty Ltd From an Australian base, Annelies provides strategic privacy advice and engages with clients to deliver a privacy suite of services. Annelies co-founded the International Association of Privacy Professionals in Australia and New Zealand in 2008 and was President between 2011 and 2012.
5 Dr John Selby - Macquarie University, Australia An academic who applies New Institutional Economics theory to Internet law issues, John practiced law at Mallesons Stephen Jaques for 3 years prior to joining Macquarie University's Division of Law in John is currently researching and writing a history of the regulation of the.au domain name space. Associate Professor Gehan Gunasekara - University of Auckland Gehan specialises in the areas of franchising law and information privacy law. He has published widely in these areas both locally and overseas. He is currently researching the development and application of cross-border privacy rules for companies and the issues that arise when personal information is transferred from one country to another. Tim McBride, Privacy and Information Law Consultant Tim has had a long-standing involvement in privacy law and issues from the 1970s and was the author of two highly influential reports in the 1980s that contributed to the eventual enactment of NZ s Privacy Act. He has published widely on the topic including the New Zealand Civil Rights Handbook. Tim established and taught the first privacy law course at a NZ university and currently is a Privacy and Information Law Consultant.
