1 POSITION DETAILS: POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: REPORTS TO: Senior Medical Officer Consultant Hepatologist, Intra-Abdominal Transplantation/Liver Unit 1. Clinical Clinical Director 2. Non-clinical Manager Transplant service New Zealand Liver Transplant Department at Auckland City Hospital. LOCATION: AUTHORISED BY: Service Manager DATE: July 2014 PRIMARY FUNCTION: To provide both transplant and non-transplant Hepatology service. To ensure that the service provided is consistent with the vision of the service. Key Accountabilities 1. Clinical Practice: Provides specialised hepatology and liver transplantation care to the population of New Zealand. Provides clinical supervision to registrars and/or Fellows and Ward 71 Clinical nurse specialist Performs specialist hepatological procedures, including liver biopsy and Fibroscan procedures Participates in on-call roster (approximately 1: 4). Participates in biennial satellite hepatology/liver transplant clinics held in Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin Participates in the Multidisciplinary Hepatoma Service Participates in clinical audit, credentialling, peer review and accreditation. 2. Professional Development, Education and Support: Responsible for own ongoing professional development (Including meeting College MOPPS requirements) Responsible for ensuring updates required are undertaken (ACLS, Fire). Participating in relevant research activities. Responsible for assisting with the coordination and facilitation of formal Registrar teaching programme. Responsible for encouraging, supervising and assessing registrars and fellows research and audit activities 3. Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Provides feedback/updates on all patients to referrer. Liases with clinic co-ordinator and surgical bookings clerks regarding clinics and OR list compilation. Annual Leave and Conference leave is notified at least six weeks in advance and is co-ordinated with the other three Hepatologists within the Unit Ensures that registrars receive feedback during specialist runs as prescribed. 4. Team Contribution: Assists department to achieve objectives, including budgeted outputs. Ensures departmental resources are used effectively Support ADHB key goals to ensure the service is safe and effective 5. Qualifications All applicants must hold a primary medical qualification recognised by the Medical Council of New Zealand. They must also have undertaken a general training in internal medicine plus advanced training in gastroenterology, internal medicine or immunology. They should have completed a fellowship which is recognised by the Australasian College of Physicians or Clinical experience. Preferably, they should have completed a fellowship at a recognised liver transplant centre and have completed or are currently writing a thesis for a post-graduate qualification (MD or PhD).

MD or PhD (or in progress), desired Training in recognised liver transplant centre Current CV includes evidence of presentations at scientific journals and publications in peer-reviewed journals

Competent in the management of end-stage liver disease, including acute and chronic liver failure. Competent in the management of liver transplant recipients and able to participate in the regular revision of the NZLTU Liver Transplant protocol to reflect advances in management of liver transplant recipients. Competent in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma and able to participate in the regular revision of the NZLTU HCC protocol to reflect advances in management of liver transplant recipients.. Competent in performing liver biopsies and supervision of registrar training in this procedure Principal and co-investigator for clinical research projects conducted within the Liver Unit (both externally funded and investigator initiated), and supervisor to clinical research co-ordinators (x5). Commitment to improving the national and international reputation of NZLTU, as a centre of excellence in both liver transplantation and general hepatology. This will be through conduct of original research and through presentations of findings at international hepatology or transplantation meetings (AASLD, EASL, APASL, ILTS, ATC, TSANZ) and publication of original manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. Intermediate Computing Ability to use standard software application.
