Course Description: Integration of advanced health and physical assessment, pathophysiology and pharmacology of common conditions across the lifespan in order to improve population health in a safe, cost-effective manner. Prerequisite: Admission to MSN Time/Location: Online with the exception for synchronous web videoconferencing meetings cited in course schedule. Apply principles of health assessment to relevant public health issues. 2. Apply current research-based pharmacotherapeutic knowledge to the management of conditions relevant to public health. 3. Apply current research-based knowledge of pathophysiology to the management of select conditions relevant to public health. 4. Synthesize current research-based knowledge of health assessment, pharmacology and pathophysiology to develop a cost-effective plan to improve population health. 2 Course Requirements: Weekly assignments: Modules will be posted in Blackboard weekly. Assignments are due by Tues, 7pm of the assigned week unless otherwise noted in the assignment. A grading rubric is attached. Paper Directions: The paper will be based on a case chosen by the student. The paper will include the following sections. Use APA format and document with appropriate professional sources. (7-10 pages) Due date: 1. Epidemiology of health issue including risk factors (15%) 2. Assessment findings (15%) 3. Relate assessment findings to pathophysiology including typical signs and symptoms and disease trajectory (20%) 4. Prescribed medications (adherence challenges including cost and side effects) (20%) 5. Cost-effective strategies to improve population health for this issue. (20%) Well written, appropriately documented. (10%) Physical Assessment: (grading rubric to be developed) Evaluation Methods: Evaluation will include weekly module assignments, a formal paper, and policy of the Graduate School and the Department of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing. The grade will be based on the following assignments: Paper 30% Physical Assessment 10% Weekly module assignments 60% Grading Scale for the MSN Program: = A = D = B 59 and below = F = C Teaching Methods: Lecture/videos, assigned readings, discussion, case studies. Test/Assignment Procedures & Policies: Students are expected to take exams (and submit assignments) at the scheduled times. As this is an online class, cancelation or delay of University classes due to adverse weather or other unexpected events will not affect the assignment schedule (i.e. dates and/or times). In the event of a documented circumstance which prevents a student from submitting assignments at the scheduled time: 1. The student must communicate with the course faculty prior to the scheduled time for the assignment. 2. An alternative schedule will be determined at the discretion of the course faculty. 3. Unexcused late assignments will not be accepted and will receive a grade of zero. Readmission Policy: Students must achieve a grade of B or higher to progress. Failure to attain this grade will require application for readmission to the MSN Nursing program. See the Graduate Nursing Student Handbook for the application process and forms. BSN-MSN 5

3 Student Progress: The course faculty will provide students with grades and feedback on the Blackboard site of the course at least one time prior to the midterm. Faculty Student Conferences: Students are strongly encouraged to schedule conferences with the course faculty at any time during the semester. If a student has questions or difficulty, relevant to this course, the student should schedule an appointment with the course faculty as soon as possible. Effective communication between students and faculty is essential to the teachinglearning process. Attendance Policy : In accordance with the Graduate School and the Department of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing policy, regular class attendance is expected of all students; if a student has >20% absences, the student may be assigned a final course grade of F.
