In this course, the student studies the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders that commonly occur in children. The student is taught the care of the young patient based on the nursing process. Basic knowledge of growth and development of the child from infancy to adolescence is reviewed. The information is presented through lecture, films, case studies, demonstrations, and supervised clinical experience. During this course, the student will demonstrate understanding of theory on a written examination. Upon completion of the course, the student must have a minimum average of 80%. The student will perform basic nursing procedures with 100% accuracy. The student will develop plans of care based upon individual patient needs. The student will demonstrate comprehension of classroom theory by performing nursing assignments, identifying common signs and symptoms and patient problems associated with the assigned patient s medical diagnosis, recognizing normal growth and development, and delivering and documenting appropriate care. Theory grade will be determined as follows: Tests & Assignments 85% Final Exam 15% Clinical grade will be satisfactory or unsatisfactory based upon evaluation of nursing actions and criteria outlined in clinical syllabus.
