5 Betty Ruth Shear made friends as easily as she made the honor roll. Smart, attractive and popular, a bright future lay ahead for the would-be doctor when life began to spiral out of control. Suddenly, periods of euphoria and unbridled creativity were interrupted by sinister obsessions, suffocating panic and repeated visits to the depths of despair-as well as to a laundry list of mental health institutions. Forty years after her diagnosis with bipolar disease at the age of 19, Shear is a Certified Public Accountant, world traveler and beloved aunt. Her success living with mental illness is an inspiration to others facing similar challenges, but Shear is honest about the fact that this happiness didn t come without struggle. In her book, Full Circle, Shear reveals a roller coaster ride of events from very public delusions to a deliberate headon crash of a passenger-filled car. She takes readers from mania to stability through treatment and includes candid interviews with friends, relatives and caregivers as well as a list of resources. Through the pain of in Shear s life, she is happy to be able to share her rainbow after the storm. Join us as Ms. Shear shares her story at the next NAMI Geauga Speaker meeting. Betty Ruth Shear, guest speaker NAMI Geauga County Quarterly Educational Speaker Meeting Thursday, January 28th at 6:30 p.m. Sisters of Notre Dame Education Center Auburn Rd. 8 April 23 & 24 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Separation anxiety wreaks havoc on dog and guardian alike. The suffering the dog endures is apparent in every heart-wrenching howl. Guardians experience deep worry and frustration, as well. Separation anxiety is not easy to resolve but it is simple in many ways and help is at hand for trainers and guardians. Advances in technology, new ways of thinking about support, and a structured approach to creating separation anxiety plans have turned a nearly impossible task into a doable one with successful resolution of even the most severe separation anxiety cases being attainable. Join Malena DeMartini, a Jean Donaldson Academy graduate, author of the book "Treating Separation Anxiety in Dogs," and over 15 years experience and several hundred successful separation anxiety cases under her belt, for a seminar where both professionals and guardians will learn how to help resolve separation anxiety issues with confidence. Register for the workshop on the coldnosecompanions.com website. Cost is $200 per participant. This workshop has been approved for 14 CEUs each for CPDT-KA/KSA and IAABC.

10 These 3 tax-smart moves could help you pay less in taxes next year FDI-4934D-A EXP 30 JUN EDWARD JONES. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Feeling like you paid too much in taxes this year? It s not too early to make a difference for next tax season. Here are three tax-saving investment strategies that may help you keep more of what you ve earned: 1. Consider tax-free municipal bonds 1 for federally tax-free investment income. 2. Contribute to a traditional IRA or 401(k) to lower your taxable income. 3. Contribute or gift to a 529 college savings plan 2 for children or grandchildren. Let s work together to find tax-smart strategies that fit your needs. 1 Municipal bonds are exempt from federal income taxes but may be subject to state and local taxes, as well as the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). 2 Contributions may be eligible for a state tax deduction or credit in certain states for those residents. If a distribution is taken but is not used for a qualified expense, the portion of the distribution representing earnings is subject to ordinary income tax and a 10% federal penalty.
