1 June 2017 TONS Newsletter + Connect with us! TONS Serves the Community For the second year in a row TONS members volunteered at the Women s Health Awareness Day educating women about radon testing and lung cancer. With the help of the NC Advisory Committee for Cancer Control and Coordination Prevention and the NC Radon Program we were able to provide home radon test kits to nearly 200 women. The program was a huge success and beneficial both for the nurses and the women attending. We hope to provide the same information at the Men s Health Initiative held in September keep an eye out for more information soon. Thank you to our volunteers: Table of Contents Page One Page Two Community Service Needs Assessment Page Three & Four Congress 2017 Page Five Congress 2017 Legislature Update Page Six Recognition Upcoming Events and Meetings Alketa Stephens Candace Martindale Leslie Creech Faye McNaull Bonnie Toaso Victoria Youngblood Melissa L Della Vecchia Jessica Rudolph Beth Van Dyke Hutch Allen
2 Needs Assessment Thank you everyone who has replied to our needs assessment survey. We are reading all of your responses and we are analyzing the information. If you haven't taken the survey yet please do so here: We truly want to hear from all of you and we value your opinions. After a brief review of the answers we have received thus far we wanted to share the following information: Programs TONS is committed to providing 6 CE opportunities a year. To offset the cost of these events to the chapter we allow local regional industry representatives to exhibit before our CE programs. In addition to CE programs, 6 of the chapter meetings are sponsored by industry. Unfortunately, PhRMA guidelines prohibit CEs to be earned during a company presentation. Our June and August programs will be CE programs. Our June program will be poster presentations by TONS members and our August program is titled "Nurses on Boards" and will focus on professional development. Many members mentioned wanting more networking, legislature, and community service events - we LOVE this input and will definitely keep this in mind in the future when planning TONS events. Most of our members live in Wake County and per the needs assessment many members work in Durham and Chapel Hill. Because of this many of our programs take place in those areas. We understand that we have members outside of these areas and we are actively working on ways to include these nurses in as many TONS activities as possible. Being on the Board Many members mentioned being apprehensive about running for a board position for TONS. Because of this we wanted to briefly discuss what it means to be a board member: Serving on the TONS board offers a unique opportunity to be on the forefront of decisionmaking for the chapter. As a board member, you would be expected to attend quarterly board meetings and encouraged to attend as many chapter business meetings as able. You would help determine the direction TONS takes in regard to educational programs, community service, and mentorship. Benefits of board membership include the opportunity to attend ONS leadership conferences, scholarships for local and national conferences, professional development, and networking. If this sounds appealing to you contact our nominating chair Katie at katie.wintermeier@unchealth.unc.edu She can provide you with information on specific openings for this fall s election and descriptions of each position. TONS s We are so sorry if you not receiving TONS s. All TONS s are sent through the virtual community (VC). Due to privacy settings we are not able to see individual s addresses or subscription preferences. Please make sure on the VC you are subscribed to receive chapter s, check that your address is correct, and also check your junk mail folder. If you are still having issues, there is an ONS help line that you can call for assistance. The number is (option 2) and is available Monday through Friday 8:30-5:00. 2
3 + Congress 2017 TONS was extremely well represented at the 42 nd Annual ONS Congress in Denver Colorado. I implore you to call. Each call is heard, transcribed and becomes permanent record. Each opinion, idea and thought is communicated to your representative and WILL affect how they ultimately vote. Every call matters and your requests translate to votes. Those votes either combine with others to become laws that directly affect our lives or they oppose other votes to block bills from becoming law. Please call and call often. Our senators are not particularly well versed in healthcare as opposed to other issues, but they do listen. Senator Tillis daughter is a nurse, so he recognizes our value and respects our opinions. Senator Burr has often been nurse friendly in several bills he has sponsored and supported. Leave a message for: Senator Burr at or Senator Tillis at
