1 XAVIER UNIVERSITY TASK ANALYSIS TASK STATEMENT: GENERAL RADIOGRAPHY Prerequisite Tasks: (State as Sub Tasks) A. List routine positions. (Ck) B. Discuss components of request. (Cc,) C. Identify appropriate preparatory procedure. (Ck) D. Discuss importance of proper ID for patient and self. E. Discuss common patient complications and conditions. (Cc) F. Discuss clothing to be removed for this exam, if any. (Cc) G. Discuss methods of eliciting patient cooperation and communication. (Cc) Enabling Objective: A. Assess request. 1. Identify procedure to be performed. (Cc) 2. Identify and check orders on chart. (Cc) 3. List any clinical information from patient chart on request. (Ck) B. Prepare facilities. 1. Locate emergency equipment as needed. (P) 2. Select appropriate supplies: (Ce) a. markers, aprons, gloves, shields b. sponges, sandbags c. calipers, cassettes 3. Demonstrate proper aseptic technique. 2 TASK STATEMENT: GENERAL RADIOGRAPHY continue: Prerequisite Tasks: Enabling Objective: C. Assess patient condition. 1. Locate and properly identify patient. (P) D. Prepare patient for exam. E. Perform procedure accurately and efficiently. a. greet patient warmly b. check arm band c. introduce yourself to patient 2. Evaluate patient s ability to move. (A) 3. Assist patient to X-ray room. (P) 4. Demonstrate empathy and effective communication skills. (A) 1. Describe to patient the clothing to be removed (if necessary). (Cc) 2. Briefly explain procedure (exam) to patient and maneuvers necessary. (Cc) 3. Request patient history (present symptoms, conditions, previous diseases and surgeries. (P) 4. Demonstrate medical ethics. (A) 5. Assist patient onto the table. (P) 1. Demonstrate knowledge of routine positions, equipment care, manipulations. (Ck) 2. Position patient accurately. (P) 3. Select proper tube angulation and patient obliquity as required. (P) 4. Utilize appropriate SID, cassette size, and ID markers (R&L, time). (P) Reviewed Fall 2015 page 2 of 6

3 E. Perform procedure accurately and efficiently. (Continue) 5. Demonstrate proper alignment of part, table, tube and cassette. (P) 6. Project the CR accurately. (P) 7. Measure the patient accurately. (P) 8. Show evidence of radiation protection (collimation, shields). (P) 9. Select appropriate technical factors MA FSS, KV, time) dependent on patient habitus and pathology factors. (Ce) 10. Demonstrate ability to set technical factors on panel correctly. (Ce) 11. Show ability to adjust technical factors for: (Ce) a. increase or decrease in SID b. pathology c. grid ratio d. plaster casts e. decrease in time necessary f. patient age g. from single to three phase 12. Give proper breaching instructions. (p) 13. Make exposure. (P) 14. Transmit image to PACS. F. Dismiss patient from room. 1. Assist patient from table to and from: chair, stretcher, or dressing room. Properly evaluate image for: (Ce) a. proper positioning (anatomical part alignment) b. proper technical quality (density, contrast, detail) c. proper image ID (R&L, time, name markers) d. if need for repeat exam and reason e. evidence of radiation protection f. evaluate the S number or Lgm number. 2. Demonstrate ability to ID anatomy. (Ck) 3. Demonstrate ability to ID gross pathologies. (Ck) 4. Demonstrate ability to differentiate between position, projection, and view.(ck 1. Complete request with data, history, initials, etc. (P) 2. Demonstrate ability to obtain stat readings (ER,OP), check with Radiologist. (P) I. Dismiss patient from department. 1.
