District I Nurse Aide of the Year Garnet McMillan - Macon Valley Nursing and Rehab Center District II Nurse Aide of the Year Rovonda Campbell - Hunter Woods Healthcare District III Nurse Aide of the Year Veronica Cheek - Universal Health Care / Ramseur District IV Nurse Aide of the Year Cathy Smith - Golden Years Nursing Home District V Nurse Aide of the Year Sidney Richardson - South Village 2014 Riley W. Clapp Outstanding Service Award Delores Jones - Skyland Care Center 1994 Olympic gold medalist Dan Jansen is a symbol of strength, hard work and perseverance. He first captured the world's attention during the 1988 Winter Olympics. Hearts went out to him when the world learned that his sister, whose last words were ones urging him to victory, had died mere hours before his first race. Although he did not medal, the US Olympic Committee honored him with the Olympic Spirit Award. The speed skating champion embodies the competitive spirit, and his story inspires us to reach for our own personal "gold." While heavily favored, in 1992 the Olympic gold eluded his grasp again. During his final chance in the 1994 Olympic Games Dan told himself to relax and enjoy himself. His performance dazzled the spectators with a world record and an Olympic gold medal in the 1000 meter event. With humor, sensitivity and candor, Jansen outlines the principles that supported him through the process of dealing with his losses and overcoming his obstacles, a process that he now understands is one of growth. The lessons he has learned from his own life experiences are the foundation of the life he lives today. The youngest of nine children born to Harry and Gerry Jansen, a retired police officer and a retired nurse, Dan is a first class competitor. He is also a man who knows about dreaming big and the work, positive attitude, and strength it takes to make those dreams come true. Register today so you do not miss this extraordinary event! The Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators has approved 1.0 hour of continuing education for this event for administrators.
5 About Our Award Winners Submitted by Richard Brady, Administrator, Macon Valley Nursing and Rehab Center: Garnet McMillan has been in long term care for 35 years and is currently a Medication Aide. She is contagious with her upbeat attitude and continuous smile! Garnet has the ability to listen to others and relate to a variety of individuals based on her life and work experiences. She is always thinking about others and even comes to the facility on her days off to visit with her residents. In addition, Garnet also volunteers her time at local schools to spend time with her grandchildren. She assists with field trips and is willing to help with anything when needed. When asked why this was her chosen profession, Garnet says, I always wanted to be a nurse, but coming from a family of 13 we did not have the money for college or nursing school. In 1978 I had an opportunity to become a Nursing Assistant. Becoming a nursing assistant let me live part of my dream and let me work in the healthcare field. I started out working in nursing homes and I just loved it! I love my residents and I have always enjoyed taking care of the elderly, they really seem to need and appreciate tender, loving, care. Submitted by Valarie Elliott, Human Resource Manager, Hunter Woods Healthcare: Rovonda Campbell is a Nurse Aide and has worked in the long term care field for 21 years. She always displays a very calm and pleasant personality regardless of the situation. Rovonda gives excellent care and is always a team player. If a resident has a special request, she is out the door to get it after checking with the nursing staff for approval. When asked why this was her chosen profession, Rovonda states, I had so many great doctors and nurses that had influenced me in my life that I wanted to be able to do the same. I was very sick as a child and wasn't expected to live. After I survived past the time frame the doctors had given me, I was still unable to speak. I had to learn sign language to be able to communicate with my family. At the age of six, God gave me a second miracle and gave me my voice. While taking speech therapy, I remember sitting in the waiting room with my mother and deciding then and there that I wanted to help others when I grew up. Since becoming a Nurse Aide, I have given everything I can to help make a difference in other's lives. Submitted by Jeri Ann Lindsay, Director of Nursing, Universal Health Care / Ramseur: Veronica Cheek works as a Restorative Aide and has been in long term care for 10 years. Veronica's attitude and willingness to be flexible and adapt to changes goes beyond all expectations. She is an asset in formulating care plans and communicating interventions that work for her residents. Her calm affect and ready smile always makes the residents feel safe and at home. Veronica says, When I was about five or six years old, my grandmother took me into her loving home. She taught me about God, honesty and manners. At the age of 10, my grandmother got dementia. Caring for her became my daily routine. I had to learn to be respectful and most of all, have a lot of patience. She made me a better person because without her, my life would have turned out so different and perhaps even tragic. She saved me! When I was eighteen she passed away. I knew then what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. People always say it takes a special person to do what I do, but from the beginning I knew what I was called to do. I am that special person, I'm a caregiver. Submitted by Melissa Hobbs, Administrator, Golden Years Nursing Home: Cathy Smith is a Nurse Aide and has been in long term care for 22 years! Cathy by far wins the spirit award for Golden Years. Everyone looks to Cathy to see what creative way she will brighten the daily lives of the residents, especially for holidays and National Nursing Home Week. There is no such thing as someone else's job in Cathy's eyes. She is a resident advocate and seeks to help each resident in the way they most need it. This may include shopping for a particular item or braiding their hair. She also visits residents that are in the hospital. Cathy is good to her co-workers as well. Many days, she will bring in donuts and biscuits for the staff to share. When asked why this was her chosen profession, Cathy says, There is satisfaction in this profession which is better than money, more valuable than a holiday and as important as a family event. My satisfaction is to see a sick person smile, to hear their stories, to help alleviate their loneliness and despair. My satisfaction is in knowing they are cared for and have value as human beings. This is why I do what I do. Submitted by Linda Tharrington, Administrator, South Village: Sidney Richardson is a Nurse Aide and has been in long term care for 42 years! Sidney joined the South Village staff in 1971 and only intended to work long enough to purchase his girlfriend a Christmas gift, but realized quickly that that he loved the job. He is selfless, always willing to make the extra effort for the residents and their families. One Christmas, Sidney convinced the administrator to allow him to use the facility van to transport residents home to be with their loved ones. Sidney used his personal time to shuttle residents back and forth, missing precious time with his own family. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his three children and nine grandchildren. Sidney says I never really developed any hobbies, but I enjoy working with my hands. The good Lord has given me my health and my best times are helping less fortunate neighbors building ramps or repairing their homes or vehicles. When asked why this was his chosen profession, Sidney says, If you enjoy what you are doing, you never work a day in your life. I have loved it from the first day until now! Submitted by Judy Brooks, Activity Director, Skyland Care Center: Delores Jones has worked in long term care for 25 years and is an Activity Assistant. Delores always has a smile on her face. Nettie Biddix, Housekeeping supervisor says, Delores is one of the most dedicated people I have ever known. She goes above and beyond her normal job duties, whether it is singing with the residents, assisting with crafts, or even calling bingo. She loves all of the residents and caters to them, making sure their needs are met at all times. Delores loves to cut-up with them and they love it! Delores doesn't accept the words, I can't. She is so driven and committed to each resident. A new resident says, I moved myself to the nursing home so I could sleep. I assumed my days of living a fuller life were done, until I met Delores! Delores has had me out on a boat, shopping at the mall and singing and traveling in the facility singing group! I asked Delores what could possibly be next for me and she said 'what about skydiving?' I cry every day, but they are tears of joy. I thank God every day for Delores. She is a precious gift to me and she has shown me what life could be like again.

Tuesday, February 25 10:30 am - 12:30 pm Nurse and Nurse Aide Day Responding to Challenging Behavior In cases where facility staff have not been properly trained to deal with challenging behaviors, often staff simply react as opposed to preventing or minimizing such behaviors. Effective support and treatment of residents or clients who exhibit challenging behaviors depend on being able to understand both the "function" that the behavior serves for the individual and the causal factors. Often, behavior that might be seen as maladaptive, crisis-causing, or catastrophic makes sense within the context of a particular person's life (i.e., gets them what they want and away from what they don't want). This session will teach assessment techniques that identify variables that predict and maintain problem behavior, and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of behavioral support plans. Common sense, "down-to-earth" techniques for dealing with specific behavioral issues will be addressed in depth. Both federal and state surveys are now taking a closer look at behavior management programs in facilities. Will your programs and interventions stand up to that scrutiny? atherine R. 14 What should I wear? Questions & Answers Attire for the 2014 NCHCFA Annual Convention and Expo is business dress with two exceptions. Great prizes will be awarded for the best dressed Olympians at the Chairman's Evening Extravaganza - A Night in Olympic Village, so start working on your outfit today. Remember, come as an Olympian from the past or present or a spectator from your favorite country! The 2014 Annual Awards Celebration is cocktail attire. Are room temperatures difficult to control? Yes! Please remember to bring a sweater to educational sessions if you are cold natured. Do I have to pre-register for Educational Sessions? Yes! Attendees MUST sign up for each individual educational session they wish to attend. Changes will be accepted until Friday, February 7, After that date, changes may only be made on a space available basis; exceptions cannot be made to this requirement. You can register and pay on-line. Visit & click on 2014 Annual Convention & Expo Registration! What do I need to do with my Certificate of Attendance? NCHCFA will be implementing a new technology to validate participant CEU's/Certificate of Attendance. As used at the 2013 Summer Symposium, each individual name badge will be printed with a unique bar code that includes attendees name and administrator license number (where applicable) registered through the NC Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators (NCBENHA). As in the past, members of the Education and Programs Committee will be available at the conclusion of each session to validate attendance. However, now your name badge will be scanned. To ensure that you receive proper credit for attending sessions, participants must have name badges scanned immediately after completion of the program attended. This new process will allow participants immediate access to view and/or print individual CEU's/Certificate of Attendance from NCHCFA's Web site. NCHCFA will continue to submit a list of attendees and the CEU hours earned during the Convention to the NC Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators within 30 days following the program. However, attendees will no longer receive a hard copy via mail. Will event tickets be available on-site for social events? Yes! Extra tickets can be purchased on-site for the NCHCFA Town Hall Meeting & Luncheon, Chairman's Evening Extravaganza- A Night In Olympic Village, Expo 2014 Buffet Luncheon, and the 2014 Annual Awards Celebration. NCHCFA will issue a certificate for 2.0 education contact hours for nurses for the Package Two program Responding to Challenging Behavior on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 10:30 am during Nurse and Nurse Aide Day.
