11 Krishna District with its head quarters at Machilipatnam is a coastal district of Andhra Pradesh. It was formerly called as Machilipatnam District. Later it was renamed as Krishna District after the holy river Krishna, by adding certain Taluks of the abolished Guntur District in Again in 1925, the Krishna District was further divided into the Krishna and the West Godavari Districts. The Krishna District lies between & of the Northern Latitude and 80 0 and of the Eastern longitude and extends over an area of 8727 sq.kms with a coast line of 88 kms. It is surrounded on the East by the Bay of Bengal and the West Godavari District, on the south by the Bay of Bengal, on the west by the Guntur and Nalgonda Districts and on the North by the Khammam District.

12 The district is divided into 50 mandals covering 4 revenue divisions i.e. 1. Machilipatnam 2. Vijayawada 3. Gudivada and 4. Nuzvid. The district is naturally divided into delta and upland zones. The delta lands are being irrigated by the canals of river Krishna. The main sources of irrigation in uplands are tanks. The water of Nagarjuna Sagar is also accessible as one of the sources of irrigation. The population of the district is lakhs comprising of 967 inhabited and 38 uninhabited villages. It is 2.57% of the total population. The density is 481 per sq.km (population census 2001). Tropical climatic conditions with extreme heat of the summer and chilly conditions of winter prevail in this district. The months between April and June are termed s the hottest months with temperatures soaring high in May. The monsoon breaking in the middle of June signifies the advent of rainfall up to the middle of October. The normal rainfall of the district is 1034 MMs, 2/3rds of which is received because of the South west monsoon. The average rainfall recorded during the year was 1037MM and in it was 908MM. Three types of soils viz., 1 Black soil which constitute 57.6% of the villages 2. Sandy clay-loams with 22.3% and 3. Red loamy with 19.4% of the villages are prevalent in this district, while sandy soils constitute to only 0.7% of small fringes on the sea coast. The district endowed with a rich variety of soils occupies an important place in Agriculture, which is the most important occupation and paddy is the main food crop produced. The gross area cropped in the district is acres of which net area sown was lakh

13 acres. The gross area irrigated is lakh acres out of which the net area irrigated is 7.00 lakh acres.
