Administration Nursing Dietary Rehabilitation Housekeeping Activitiess Social Services Maintenance Laundry ANHAA NEWS Friday, March 28, 2008 Update on Wound Care Staging from the Alabama Board of Nursing The practice of wound care including assessment, staging and treatment is presently under review by the Alabama Board of Nursing. The Board is reviewing the curricula of RN and PN programs to determine what, if anything, should be addressed in a standardized procedure. Until the Board issues written guidance, licensed nurses and organizations should continue current practices so long as current practices observee the usual and customary standard of care. (Statement Approved by Board of Nursing, March 21, 2008) ANHAA continues to be involved with this issue and will update you when more information becomes available. Wilder Healthcare Center Residentss Create Easter Bonnets The residents at Wilder Healthcare Center in Dadeville used their artistic abilities to createe their own Easter bonnets. TLC Nursing Center Receives Deficiency Freee Health Survey! TLC Nursing Center recently received a deficiency free health survey. Caren Johnson is the Administrator, and Helen James is the Director of Nursing. The facility is located in Oneonta and is operated by Trinity Management. Congratulations to the stafff of TLC Nursing Center on this outstanding accomplishment! Final Call for NOAA Weather Radios: Requests due March 31 A NOAAA Weather Radio can provide life saving information to your facility during an emergency or disaster. The radio can be programmed to provide National Weather Service Page 1 of 5
2 warnings, watches and other hazard information specific to your county and surrounding area. ANHA is exploring funding possibilities to purchase NOAA Weather Radios for facilities that do not currently have one. Facilities that do not have a NOAA Weather Radio should contact John Matson at the Association office at jmatson@anha.org by noon on Monday, March 31, Emergency and Disaster Contact Numbers for ADPH and AEMA ANHA has received the phone numbers for facilities to call during a disaster, emergency or severe weather. The Alabama Emergency Management Agency and Alabama Department of Public Health s Center for Emergency Preparedness have assured us that these numbers are always monitored. Please save these numbers in several places including your SouthernLINC phone. Your facility should have received the packet this week. Please contact John Matson at the Association office at jmatson@anha.org if you have not received your packet. The planning guide and other support materials can also be downloaded from the National Nursing Home Week website at NNHW is May with the theme of Love is Ageless. The theme encourages facilities to recognize those whose compassion, acts of kindness and love of life inspire and exemplify a caring community of residents, families, friends, staff and volunteers. Promotional products featuring the Love is Ageless theme are now available. Jones Sportswear in Birmingham will produce t-shirts this year. Please see the attached/enclosed Jones Sportswear flyer for more information. AHCA has produced 12 items for this year s theme of Love is Ageless. Please see the attached/enclosed AHCA flyer for more information on the items. ADPH Requests Facility Information The Alabama Department of Public Health is sending each nursing home a letter requesting a facility diagram showing the layout of the facility. The diagram should include a list/designation of patient beds as to whether each bed is licensed only or certified by Medicare, Medicaid, or both. Unused patient space should be noted as well. The requested information is due by May 1, It is our understanding that further clarification will be forthcoming from the Alabama Department of Public Health ANHA Mid-Year Convention Make your plans now to attend the 2008 ANHA Mid-Year Convention, May 5 th 8 th, at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach. Nursing home administrators, social workers, activity directors, risk managers and assisted living administrators can earn 14 hours of continuing Page 2 of 5
3 education. We have 16.2 contact hours approved for nurses by the Alabama Board of Nursing Provider #ABNP0151. Please visit our website ( for more details. Please Note: The ANHA hotel room block releases April Ms. Alabama Nursing Home Pageant Information concerning the 2008 Ms. Alabama Nursing Home Pageant has been mailed to all facility administrators and activity directors. The Pageant is scheduled for August 5, 2008, at The Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham. The packet of information regarding this can be found on our website at EDUCATION UPDATE Preceptor Certification and Recertification Training Seminar April 7 th Sponsored by EyeCare for Life The Preceptor Certification and Recertification Training Seminar will be presented on April 7, 2008, at The Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham. All individuals interested in becoming a licensed nursing home administrator must complete a board approved Administrator-In-Training (AIT) Program. The Board has rules and regulations regarding entry-level requirements for nursing home administrators, the length of the AIT program for applicants, and the qualifications for becoming a certified preceptor. This session is designed to certify licensed nursing home administrators who are interested in conducting an AIT program in their facility as preceptors. In order to qualify to become a certified preceptor, individuals must have been a licensed and practicing administrator in Alabama for at least three years, or have been a licensed nursing home administrator for at least two years in another state and have been licensed and practicing in Alabama for at least one year, with no disciplinary action having been taken against them in the last three years. Preceptor certification and re-certification, once approved, lasts for three years. This seminar has been approved for 3 hours of CEU for nursing home administrators. Wound Assessment Seminar The Association has been notified that several seminars will be conducted during March and April that involve wound assessment and staging. A clinical component is also built into the program. We encourage you to consider attending this seminar. Please see the enclosed brochure for more details. AHCA NEWS AHCA Quality Award Applications The 2008 AHCA/NCAL Quality Award applications, as well as supporting materials, have been posted on the AHCA website at We encourage you to visit the site and download the application materials if you are interested in applying this year. 4 Webinar: Mental Health and Nursing Home Residents Join the American Health Care Association (AHCA) for the "Mental Health Issues Among Nursing Home Residents" webinar on April 9 th. This online session is designed to describe the various presentations of depression in nursing home residents. Depression is a growing issue for long term care residents. In addition to the obvious emotional distress, depression has serious physiological and medical consequences. Symptoms of weight loss and functional decline, common symptoms of depression, are targets of Departments of Health inspections and can result in negative marks against a facility. The presentation aims to help you understand the various presentations of depression in long term care residents; the role of medications in treating depression in long term care residents; and the importance of psychosocial and behavioral interventions in treating depression. Cahaba GBA Provider Outreach The Cahaba GBA Provider Outreach and Education (POE) Department s purpose is to reduce the provider Comprehensive Error Rate Testing (CERT) program rate by giving Medicare providers information they need to understand the Medicare program. POE educates providers and their staff on such things as provider inquiries, claim submission errors, Medical Review data and CERT. Cahaba GBA's POE department hosts webinars and teleconferences throughout the year, as well as partnering with state associations to keep providers abreast of the Medicare program and procedures. You can find upcoming educational events by visiting the Cahaba GBA website at and clicking on "Calendar of Events" under the Education and Resources title. Cahaba GBA is hosting a Teleconference on April 2, 2008 titled: Part A-2008 Outpatient Therapy Documentation Requirements.
