It is a time for rejuvenation and contemplation. I find it also prepares me for the fall, a time of learning and professional growth. As I look at PAPAN s Mission Statement, I see a pathway to success for our members. Many have taken the on the challenge of continuing their education by going back for their BSN, MSN or even PhD. Others have demonstrated their commitment to perianesthesia nursing by validating their expertise through certification both CPAN and CAPA. Some have shared their knowledge through research, as demonstrated at the National Conference with poster presentations. Above all they have a sense of pride, honor and self-esteem. They know they can provide quality patient care to the population that we serve in our communities. On this venture to success, I want to invite everyone to the annual PAPAN Perianestheisa PRIDE Conference to be held at the Mohegan Sun Pocono in Wilkes Barre, PA. It will give you the opportunity to network with other nurses from Pennsylvania. There will be colleagues to help nurture and feed your appetite for knowledge about patient care in a very hi-tech environment. We need to recognize and formulate a care plan from pre-surgery until they leave to go home. Your PAPAN Officers and Board of Directors invite you to join us in Wilkes-Barre this fall and start your pathway to success! PAPAN MISSION STATEMENT The Association exists to promote excellence in patient care by supporting perianesthesia nurses through education, the exchange of knowledge, research, caring and the respect for dignity and unique needs of the individual. Deadline to submit articles for the Winter/Spring issue is December 30,

9 F Y I PAPAN Election Update The 2016 elections were held in February. We were fortunate to have candidates to fill the available positions. There were 67 ballots returned. PAPAN s goal is to have more candidates for the available positions and have an improved voting response. The annual elections will be continued online. The ballot and candidate information will be posted prior to the election, members will receive a postcard with instructions with the time frame for the election. The ballot will be mass ed to members with a link to cast your vote. There will be a second sent as a reminder halfway through the voting period. This is a cost-saving process as well as an eco-friendly measure. Remember that election of PAPAN leaders is a benefit of membership. It takes less than 60 seconds to vote. We are currently seeking candidates for the position of vice president/president elect, treasurer and 2 directors for the board. A board position is a good way to advance your professional achievements, get information about PAPAN S goals and share your ideas for the future success of the organization. Please consider taking the challenge to become a PAPAN leader. PAPAN Contributions to Charities PAPAN supports the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and the Ovarian Cancer Coalition with financial support and participating in fundraising events. These efforts by members contribute to the funds needed to continue research to find the cure for life threatening diseases. To help, go online and find events in your area. During the ASPAN National Conference in Philadelphia, PA, PAPAN, the host component, sold commemorative pins. As a result of the sales, a $400 donation was made to Philabundance. 9

10 Education Update PERIANESTHESIA PRIDE PLANNING Ursula Mellinger, RN, BSN, CAPA The annual PAPAN Perianesthesia PRIDE Conference date is nearly here and the planning committee deserves a BIG thank you. The PRIDE planning committee changes every year depending on the location and the volunteers that step up to the challenge of coordinating the conference. Sometimes the members of the committee have never organized a statewide conference so it is a learning experience. Guidelines and rules from ANCC & ASPAN change often. Even if someone has experience in conference planning, it can be different every time. We compiled a PRIDE Primer that has guidelines for the planning committee. The primer, s, phone calls and texts are essential for good communication and appropriately coordinated actions to meet the goal of a successful conference. Also there are many experienced individuals that are available to be contacted for solutions of planning issues. When the weekend is over, the team can walk away with a feeling of great accomplishment. This also looks great in a professional nurse portfolio. The PRIDE Committee along with PAPAN leaders start the planning process a year in advance. The hotel/venue is secured, contract signed then the speakers and topics are selected. As always, the networking and sharing common solutions to common problems of perianesthesia nursing is encouraged. During the awards presentation, by a random drawing, the Theresa Lingafelt Award is presented to a member of PAPAN attending the conference. The award in the amount of $250 is to offset the cost of attending the conference. More information regarding PAPAN s awards, grants and scholarships can be found at under Resources. 11 PAPAN Hosts Needed for ASPAN Seminars: a Win/Win Situation for PAPAN and the Host ASPAN Seminars are a great benefit to PAPAN. The education needs of members in all areas of the component can be met at no cost to PAPAN. Host responsibilities for ASPAN Seminars include promoting the seminars locally and providing a liaison (host/hostess) for the seminar (only one host/hostess is necessary/accepted). This host/hostess will handle registration on the day of the seminar, distribute the required handouts and moderate for the speaker. The liaison receives complimentary registration to the seminar and is recognized during the ASPAN National Conference as a Host/Hostess. This registration is not transferable. Components: A maximum of two seminars may be requested from each component per season. It is now mandatory that all requests come from the component president. The requested city for the seminar must be a city with an airport hub and must be within 30 minutes from the airport. You may request a specific speaker but your request is not guaranteed. The ANCC-COA Accredited Provider Unit selects, contacts and confirms all speakers. ASPAN takes care of all logistics and expenses for each seminar. There are no financial commitments for the requesting entity. The requesting entity does not receive any profit from the seminar. A minimum of 20 attendees is required to insure a successful program. Any seminar that cannot meet this requirement will be cancelled. 12 NEW PENNSYLVANIA STATE LAW As of January 1, 2015, this law requires Pennsylvania nurses to complete training in child abuse reporting. This includes those individuals who are applying for nursing licenses and those seeking renewal of a license. Pennsylvania Department of State Licensing: Mandatory Education for Child Abuse Who: RNs and others considered mandatory reporters of child abuse. What: Must complete a State approved education program about the procedure for reporting child abuse in the state of Pennsylvania. This requirement is known as Act 31 Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting. When: Complete this education prior to your next RN license renewal. Where: You can complete a FREE Board Approved online program at your convenience from home or work. How: 1. Direct access to the FREE online program: go to the 2nd link below. This will take you to the education program site. Follow the instructions for log on. Once you have been assigned a user name and password, you can begin the program. When you complete the program, you will be issued a certificate that you can print. 2. Save your certificate for your own records. 3. Renew your license at your regular renewal schedule. When you renew your license, you will note a question about Act 31, e.g. Yes or No Did you complete a State Approved education program for Act 31 Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting? 4. The process is like the current online RN license renewal where you answer Yes to the question about meeting the continuing education requirement for 30 hours. 13 PANAW PANAW at UPMC SHADYSIDE Family House Dinner is Served On March 15 the perianesthesia nurses from Shadyside Hospital s Ambulatory Surgery Dinner prepared and served dinner to guests at the Family House in the Shadyside neighborhood of the city. Family House of Pittsburgh is a non profit organization. It was started in 1983 by a group of community leaders and physicians. Family House serves all Pittsburgh hospitals and provides affordable home away from home. Families and patients as well as their caregivers may stay. There are four locations throughout the city. The organization relies on contributions and volunteers to meet the needs of the guests. Patients and families from many sections of the country come to Shadyside for various treatments and surgical procedures, ranging from complex or simpler outpatient procedures that are done in the Ambulatory Surgery Center. When it came time to select a service project our unit chose Family House. The unit collected donations for the items needed to prepare the meal. The project organizer was Karen Kerin RN. The menu selected included steak hoagies, ham BBQ and pierogies. Dessert was an ice cream sundae bar that was donated by Kings Restaurant group. The available volunteers did the final meal preparations, set up and served the dinner to the guests. We had 8 to 10 nurses as well as ancillary staff at the site. Approximately 60 to 70 guests joined us for dinner. It was a very rewarding and humbling experience for the nurses and one that was greatly appreciated by the families and guests. Many stated they don t really eat very much while visiting in the hospital so this was an extra special touch to their stay. I have a feeling we may make this an annual service project. Check out the Family House website. It was just such a good feeling to give back and it really enlightens you to the hardships many family members endure while their loved ones are hospitalized and they are staying at their home away from home. Ursula Mellinger BSN CPAN CAPA Type to enter text Coordinator of event (L) Karen K. and Ursula M. PAPAN Education Chair L-R Karen K. RN, Katie M. RN, Carol J. Unit Secretary serving dinner WHAT DID YOU DO TO CELEBRATE PANAW? PANAW is a week each February for all perianesthesia nurses to celebrate our commitment to our patients and our specialty. Hospitals and departments celebrate this event in many unique ways. We have heard of pizza parties, breakfasts, poster presentations, lectures and dinners. For several years PAPAN has celebrated this event by coordinating food drives throughout the state. Be creative in your service project but please let us know what you did by sending a picture and description of your project to newsletter editor, Evelyn Medycki at erm1136@verizon.net. PANAW Award to members All current ASPAN/PAPAN members will be entered into a drawing for a one year PAPAN membership. Two names will be drawn and announced during PANAW. Board members and committee chairs are excluded. This award will replace the PANAW coupon for PRIDE. The 2016 DRAWING WAS HELD DURING PANAW WEEK. THE WINNING MEMBERS ARE: BONNIE KEECH AND MICHELLE SALVI. 13

14 Le!ers Dear Board members, I would like to thank PAPAN for the scholarship to attend the ASPAN National Conference in Philadelphia. What a thrilling and rejuvenating experience to be with so many perianesthesia nurses and receive information about the issues that affect our specialty. It was interesting to hear the issues other nurses have and compare them to my own experiences. I appreciated the wide variety of topics that were offered. There was something for everybody. With the movement to monitoring etco2, the post conference offered a greater insight into capnography, sedation and obstructive sleep apnea. It is always interesting to interact with the vendors and seeing the latest advances in technology to assist with our daily tasks and patient care needs. Thank you for giving me the opportunity for personal growth and knowledge. PAPAN should feel proud! It was an awesome week. I loved the camaraderie. Everybody did a fantastic job. Everything, the venue, color guard, Jenny Kilgore s voice, the speakers and personal touches made this conference a hugh success. Not bad when the only complaint was no coffee. The time at conference went too quickly. See you at the PAPAN PRIDE. Ursula Mellinger A great first national conference! I want to tell PAPAN I had a great time at my first ASPAN national conference. I enjoyed working with you all. You made me feel very welcomed. The sessions, component night, poster presentations and vendors were great. Thank you for the opportunity. See you at the PRIDE. Tammy Waner Sincerely, Wanda Scheeler, RN, CPAN Note of thanks for the scholarship! I loved my time at the National Conference in Philadelphia this past April. It was a wonderful time to be with my friends from PAPAN. I talked with so many other nurses and it was so exciting. I brought home many new ideas and a new excitement for my nursing career. I had such fun volunteering with everyone. Everyone was so friendly. The hotel was so accommodating. I had such a good time I can't wait to go next year. Thank you PAPAN for helping me make this dream a reality. Dianna Shriner What a great week! It was exciting and fun to be the host component even though it was a lot of work for many. The best part was being with you all. I missed seeing the ones that were not able to attend. Now, I am looking forward to attending the PAPAN PERIANESTHSIA PRIDE CONFERENCE. Nancy Glass Kudos to the PAPAN conference team! Great job! It was good to see everybody. Becky Hartley 14

15 So.Why go to ASPAN s National Conference? The obvious reason would be to obtain contact hours and gain knonwledge about our specialty. It is a chance to ask questions directly to the speaker instead of reading an article or attending a webinar (all of which are important). The main reason for me to attend, when I can, is the immense feeling of excitement about our specialty and motivation I get when I m with other perianesthesia nurses. National Conference feeds my spirit! Some of the things that I learned during the week in Philly were: 1-the common reason nurses don t pass the certification test the first time: failure to study using ABPANC s 12-week program and neglecting to take the pre-test twice, once at the beginning of studying and again halfway through the 12 week program. It s also important to know the ABPANC web site. 2-the reason that Tylenol with codeine shouldn t be regularly prescribed for post-op kids 3-what s happening with scheduling and cross-training in the perianesthesia arena 4 that learning can be fun when attending a lecture about sepsis done by PAPAN member Kim Noble. She is so interesting to listen to no matter what the topic. 5-updates to our ASPAN Standards There were many other topics such as diabetes, ARDS, EMR & patient safety. We also had 3 inspirational speakers: Kelly Swanson author of Who Hijacked my Fairytale, Renee Thompson from Pittsburgh spoke about nurses as heroes and how we don t always see ourselves like that and Rich Bluni, author of Inspired Nurse and Inspired Journal had us in tears. They were all excellent. I left these sessions feeling glad to be a nurse and feeling valued. PAPAN & ASPAN are making a difference. You can make a difference. By networking, issues at work can be addressed. There may not be easy solutions, but you will find common ground among the other nurses at National Conference or the PAPAN yearly conference called PRIDE. Networking is very rewarding and informative. Together you can make informed decisions when faced with issues at work regarding patients or their family, a coworker or physicians. 16 2016 ASPAN NATIONAL CONFERENCE IN PHILADELPHIA: A HUGH SUCCESS Where to begin? OK, here is my story. First the conference was a HUGE success, extremely well organized, the location was perfect and everything was very accessible. The vendors were awesome, as usual. All speakers were a wealth of knowledge. The opening key note speaker was very thought provoking and provided us with some very emotional and heart warming stories. The closing speaker, Renee Thompson, ignited a spark in all of us. We also had time for various social gatherings. Nancy, Rosey, Dianna (fellow PAPAN members) and I went to Victor s Café in south Philly. We were treated to live opera presentations while enjoying an amazing dinner. One unique experience for me was working closely with a fellow Villa Maria College graduate, Laura Kling, the conference coordinator and then reuniting with another fellow Villa graduate, Kathy Dureault, from California.I have not seen her for many, many, ok 40 years!! I was also able to reconnect with acquaintances I made over the years. I must also send out a big thank you to Courtney Papp and the entire National Office Staff. They made my assignment as Hostess Coordinator so much easier with their friendliness and willingness to help. They never tired of my many, many questions. Speaking as the Hostess Coordinator, what a memorable and rewarding experience. It was my responsibility to organize and assign the host/hostess volunteers to various sessions and events. This included volunteers for all the didactic sessions, the ASPAN shop, silent auction, hostess and hospitality desks, special events, pre and post conference session, Representative Assembly and opening and closing ceremonies. All totaled, there were approximately 70 volunteers. It took many hours of work and checking, rechecking and rechecking!!! But, it was so worth it! I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it and if I had to do it again I would, in a heartbeat! There was not one volunteer who balked at their responsibilities. At times when we were short on volunteers for a session. many just stepped up to the plate and took hold of the situation. It was very rewarding to work beside so many dedicated professional nurses with such a strong commitment to perianesthesia nursing. How great to meet so many from all sections of the country. Even though we came from near and far, we found many common bonds. It is a good feeling to know that we are not alone facing common problems. At National Conference you are truly able to network and share creative solutions. I want to send a special thank you to all the dedicated PAPAN members who gave so much of their time at the National Conference. Thanks for being there and supporting me. Thanks for the prayers to St. Anthony to help find some precious items that we thought were lost and gone and forever! Also a BIG THANK YOU TO OUR NEW FRIENDS from the Philly area, Susan, Donita and Dorothy. You were awesome and a great asset to the hospitality table. Also from the Philly area, Sharon L. and Sandra K, thank you for all your volunteer hours. We hope to see all of you at the PAPAN PRIDE in October. Wilkes Barre is not that far away. It will be good to see you again. 17 To Go or Not to Go to ASPAN National Conference-That is the Question! Seems like a silly question to me. I have been a member of ASPAN and PAPAN since their inception. Most people would respond to the inquiry by saying, I m going for the contact hours or Philly is a great place to visit. Both statements are appropriate. What is exciting to me is that during the conference you are with 1800 plus nurses with the same interests. Perianesthesia nursing is a very uniquely specialized practice. The networking with nurses from across the country is amazing. I participated in the Dream Walk Sunday morning in 29 degree weather with several of my colleagues. This was one way to get my blood flowing. The temperature did not decrease the enthusiasm of the participants. The contributions from the walk will support ASPAN scholarships. Sunday evening was component night and we Shared the Love. The theme was about what you love. Love Philly and Philly will love you back. Boy did it! Several Rocky Balboas were seen as well as Ben Franklin for photo opportunities. Punxsutawny Phil was even there. I have attended at least six national conferences. This conference is the first one I volunteered as a hostess. I am so glad I did. I worked in the ASPAN Shop, and was hostess for several education sessions. I met so many people while I was working. As a hostess we welcomed the attendees inviting them into their chosen sessions. Philly has many places to visit, Reading Terminal Market, Victor Café with the waiters singing arias, Maggianos Italian Restaurant etc. So many wonderful experiences. Now for some of the things I have learned during my time at national conference: 1-The keynote speaker pointed out that nursing is one of the few professions that allows us to impact peoples lives on a personal level. We care for the physical as well as the emotional needs of our patients. This can be very rewarding. Over time though, health care challenges can make it difficult to maintain the enthusiasm and passion. This speaker reminds us how to stay engaged and committed to providing extraordinary patient care. 2-Kelly Swanson was the very entertaining CAPA/ CPAN luncheon speaker. I knew by her titled topic the lunch would be relaxed, funny with a good message delivered. Who Hijacked My Fairy Tale. She talked about the yellow brick road of life where we get stuck between the vision and reality. She stated the obstacles don t bring us down. It is how we choose to react to them. 3-The educational content of this conference was phenomenal. Think of any subject encountered in the realm of perianesthesia nursing, it was covered. I appreciate the PAPAN sponsored scholarship to attend National Conference. The networking, educational sessions and general social activities will be beloved memories. I encourage anyone in this specialized field of nursing to become involved in our state and national associations. 4-There are multiple financial awards ( scholarships ) available at both state and national levels. Refer to and for more information. I hope to see you at the PAPAN PRIDE Conference at the Mohegan Sun Hotel and Casino, Wilkes Barre, PA in October. Part of this process involves developing the skills needed to read, critique and appraise research articles. To be successful, it is helpful to have some basic understanding of the research process. The Research Committee has located some short videos on survey construction and the differences between qualitative and quantitative research to get you started. 21 Region IV Repo" ASPAN Update Happy Summer! The awakening of the flowers and trees brings optimism with the sunlight to a renewed sense of purpose. My renewed energy was sparked at the 35th ASPAN National Conference in Philadelphia. The conclave of perianesthesia nurses brought forth an excitement for our specialty while networking and sharing best practices. It was VERY exciting to watch as Katrina Bickerstaff, from Massachusetts (our Region 4), be installed as the President of ASPAN! She has worked within ASPAN on many committees and projects and is ready to lead. Her ideas and platform support the uniqueness of the younger generation of nurses. It should be an exciting year! Along with the educational sessions one of the most important parts of the conference is the Representative Assembly (RA). The RA, is made up of 2 members from each component that vote on any bylaw changes and vote for the open Board of Director positions. The RA elected Susan Russell from Texas as the new Vice President/President Elect, so in 2017 Susan will become the ASPAN President. The RA also elected me to another two year term as Region 4 Director. Throughout the conference there were working sessions for the ASPAN Board of Directors. This is a time that the Board gets to meet face to face and review progress on the strategic plan, goals of education, budget items and the orientation of new board members. I would like to update the members of PAPAN on the new and exciting progress that ASPAN has made. ASPAN s four year envisioned future is to be recognized as the leading organization for evidence based perianesthesia-nursing practice. This will be accomplished in a variety of ways. One is to increase membership as this gives our organization the widest representation and variety of knowledge from the members. ASPAN is looking to increase public presence with social media to attract those members savvy with this medium. Look for more Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms from ASPAN. Another goal of ASPAN to meet that four year goal is to increase the utilization of ASPAN s educational products. In order to be successful, these products need to be current, up-to-date, and offered in a manner that members want them. The educational leaders will collaborate with the Clinical Practice Committee (CPC), Research Committee and Evidence Based Practice Committee to explore topics that the members are inquiring about. The Research arm of ASPAN is becoming more active every year with expanding roles and interaction with members. The Johanna Briggs Institute scholars within ASPAN are working diligently on their projects to offer ASPAN members the best in evidence based information. ASPAN has hired a librarian to assist with literature searches to support updated products, assist with new Practice Recommendations, as well as assisting with ASPAN research priorities. New this year were awards given to the research posters displayed at national conference. Kudos to those active participants. The posters demonstrated the wide variety of research going on in this country. An active journal club is currently under construction to support members participation. Any new ideas for research are always appreciated. The lofty goal of ASPAN is to bring our organization to the forefront for perianesthesia practice. It is an exciting time to be so involved with such a forward looking group. Every member of ASPAN can participate and that will make the organization stronger on every front. I am offering to assist YOU with getting involved at whatever level you are comfortable with. There is something that every person can contribute to the association with your knowledge and skills. I await your . Amy L Dooley Region 4 Director ASPAN Board of Directors adooley@aspan.org 21

22 E%tor s Note Now that the dust has settled after the national conference, we can reflect on the impact it had on us. I still enjoy the experience of attending the conference, and always will. It is always great to reconnect with so many friends. Now we can turn our attention to the annual PAPAN conference. The planning committee is busy with the last minute details. I know the attendees will have a very positive experience. Not only do you have the opportunity to get contact hours but to network with other perianesthesia nurses. I hope I see you there. The PAPAN Board of Directors will meet on Friday, the evening prior to the conference. There is always much to be discussed and many plans to be made for the good of the members.
