1 Author s Note: This information is from a Draft report by the Division of Public Health, Bureau of Health Planning and should be considered a draft. Delaware Nursing Home and Assisted Living/Rest Residential Utilization Statistics January - December Presented to the Delaware Health Resources Board April 22, 2010 Tibor Toth and Rebecca Bedford Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research University of Delaware
2 The Nursing Home Utilization Statistics Report presents the collected data in two sections. The Facility Characteristics section focuses on data collected from 1998 through. Most of the summary presented in this section focuses on aggregated data for all nursing homes in Delaware, specifically: (1) Facility characteristics (the number of homes and beds by ownership) (2) Utilization data (patient days, occupancy, admissions and discharges) (3) Patient characteristics (age, gender and source of payment) The second section entitled Tables presents summary characteristics such as total patient days, occupancy rates, and patients by source of payment, along with the number of admissions and discharges for each facility.

This calculation assumes that all facilities were open 365 days and that the number of licensed beds did not vary throughout the year. In the report you will find average occupancy rates and overall (weighted) occupancy rates based on the actual number of days facilities were open. Please note that a couple of facilities had changes in the number of licensed beds which can influence the occupancy rates NCC Kent Sussex All Private Public All Facilities

12 Assisted Living/Rest Residential Utilization Report The same methods were used to collect the data for the assisted living/rest residential facilities as the nursing home facilities. The report presents the collected data in five sections. A Definitions section which summarizes terminology used throughout the report, a Facility Characteristics section which summarizes the licensed capacity of Delaware s assisted living/rest residential facilities by Facility and County and the last three sections reflect the aggregated data for all facilities, specifically: (1) Utilization (2) Move-Ins (3) Move-outs
13 Calculating Occupancy Rates for Assisted Living/Rest Residential facilities Occupancy rates for individual facilities are calculated as the ratio of Resident Billable days (reported by facility on a monthly basis) and Licensed bed days. Licensed bed days are calculated as Licensed beds (reported by facility in December) multiplied by the Total (actual) days facility was open during the year (based on months facility was open). The Occupancy rates (overall) at County, State level is calculated as the ratio of Resident Billable Days (sum for each facility in the geography) and Licensed Bed days (sum for each facility in the geography). The Occupancy rate (average) at County, State level is calculated as the mean (average) of Occupancy rates for individual facilities in the given geography.
