Class of 2017 Natalie Erbs Hometown St. Louis, MO Medical School Creighton University School of Medicine, Omaha, NE Favorite Movie - Singin' in the Rain, Remember the Titans, Mean Girls Interests - Running, hiking, watching sports (especially the St. Louis Cardinals and Rams), reading, traveling Why Mayo? - Mayo offered me the opportunity to learn full spectrum family medicine. I love that our clinic is in a small town, allowing me the chance to practice all aspects of the specialty. But we also get to learn from some of the best physicians in the world at the Mayo campus in Rochester. The culture of Mayo truly values education and is the way I hope to practice medicine after residency. What would be your ideal practice? - Eventually I hope to go into academics and work with residents and medical students. I would like to focus on obstetrics, women's health, pediatrics, and procedures while still doing full spectrum family medicine. Eva Fried Hometown - Portland, OR Medical School: The Technion - Haifa, Israel Favorite Movie: The Right Stuff Interests: Bikes, cooking, backpacking, sewing, VWs, and spending time with my husband and daughter. Why Mayo? Like most people, I was really struck by the Mayo culture, where the patient's needs are paramount and faculty display a true passion for medicine and teaching. I like having the opportunity to train in both the rural clinic as well as a world renowned medical center. What would be your ideal practice? - I'm interested in a lot of things and that's one of the reasons I chose family medicine. I see myself having a broad spectrum family medicine practice including women's health and obstetrics. I'm interested in both rural and metropolitan settings so we'll just have to see where I end up.

Natalie Gentile Hometown Pittsburgh, PA Medical School University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburgh, PA Favorite Movie Bridesmaids and Donnie Darko Interests Practicing/teaching yoga, exercise, spending time with my husband, Amir, and my family Why Mayo? - I love the opportunity to learn rural medicine only minutes away from world class specialty training in the city of Rochester. There is a strong sense of family, tradition, and respect here at Mayo which was very appealing to me. My husband introduced me to Mayo when he did his away rotation in Urology here and since then it's been Mayo or bust! What would be your ideal practice? - Urban community family practice with both inpatient and outpatient work. I am very interested in Preventative Medicine so I hope to incorporate my love of both exercise and nutrition as a huge part of my career path! Alessandra Glaser Hometown Tower Lakes, IL Medical School University of Illinois, Chicago, IL Favorite Movie - Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Lord of the Rings Series - total escape movies! Interests - Getting my two month old son to smile back at me is my favorite thing in the world to do right now! Nothing beats it. Aside from hanging out with "the boys", my husband and son, I also really enjoy being with my five year old niece, Audrey - kids are a joy to me. I also enjoy fishing - for trout in Big Bear Lake California around where my husband is from and in Northern Lake Michigan for salmon. Nothing like sitting on a boat relaxing and catching dinner. Why Mayo? - Quick story. Before I worked with a Mayo-trained physician, I didn't think residency training made that much of a difference. That was until a Mayo-trained doctor joined our internal medicine service. He was the only one to take a look into a pain service team's note for our patient with liver failure. He quickly realized that the dose of narcotics he was on was way too high, quickly went to his room, and found him in respiratory depression. Then I learned that Mayo training would make analyzing patient safety a part of the pattern of how I would look at a patient. I also worked three jobs during school where I learned how important support staff is. I knew if I came to Mayo there be no issues with the support staff following through on their job, AND they would go above and beyond for the patient and for the team. It would aid in my learning. Mayo also gives me the combination of rural primary care here in Kasson while working in the top hospitals in the world a few miles away. Ideal practice - I plan on doing a lot of patient education both individually and in the group setting on preventative medicine to try help keep my patients healthy and prevent bad outcomes based on lack of knowledge of a disease. I am interested in pediatrics as you can tell from my interests so I would like kids to make up a large part of the patients I see. I also enjoy doing deliveries as well.

Zachary Merten Hometown - Spicer, MN Medical school - University of MN-Duluth Favorite movie - Legends of the Fall or Sandlot Interests - Anything outdoors including bow hunting, spending time on MN lakes, hiking and camping. I m also a diehard MN sports fan and an avid fantasy football player. Additional indoor interests include being a movie buff, live theater, and experimenting in the kitchen. Why Mayo? - I was first attracted to the Mayo reputation, but I actually fell in love with the people on interview day. Whether it was the consultants, residents, or staff members, everyone was warm and welcoming and proud of their family medicine residency. I also connected with the Kasson clinic as I m interested in working with rural underserved populations. Additional bonuses included the new procedure clinic and the extensive training in obstetrics in a variety of settings. What would be your ideal practice? - My ideal practice would be located in a rural Minnesota community where I would be providing full spectrum care. Jessica Moertel Hometown Rochester, MN Medical School University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN Favorite Movie - My all-time favorite movie is "Singing in the Rain" Interests - Skiing, rock climbing, scuba diving, running around the lakes in Minneapolis, yoga, playing board games/card games, and spending time with my husband and dog. Why Mayo? - Growing up in Rochester, I was immersed in the culture of Mayo Clinic. I viewed Mayo as an exemplary hospital with a unique approach to patient care which I hoped to someday be a part of. I have always had a strong interest in rural medicine, and the Mayo Family Medicine Residency Program offered the best of both worlds. The Kasson Clinic allows for a broad spectrum rural experience with the availability of world renowned specialists for consultation. The attitude of the facility values the needs of the patients above everything else and strives to educate its residents to provide the best care possible. What would be your ideal practice? - My ideal practice would be to work in a rural clinic/hospital where I could provide broad spectrum family medicine with an emphasis on OB, Pediatrics, and Women's Health.

Abraham Tiffany Hometown Binghamton, NY Medical School Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC Favorite Movie Hard Question! Tie between WALL-E (also my niece's favorite) & Happy Gilmore Interests Spending time with family & friends, home-cooked meals, movies, golf, playing & watching basketball, stand-up & improv comedy shows Why Mayo? Easy Question! The Family Medicine Program at Mayo Clinic offers residents a unique and comprehensive training opportunity the clinical autonomy and close-knit feel of practicing community medicine at Kasson is perfectly complemented by the outstanding resources available via Planet Mayo. I ve only been in Minnesota a few months, but I ve already gained a better appreciation of what Dr. Mayo meant by the spirit of the clinic. It takes a team of compassionate and dedicated individuals to make the Mayo Clinic Model of Care possible, and I m honored to be a part of this institution. What would be your ideal practice? - A healthy mix of hospital service and outpatient clinic; preferably a family-oriented group practice that provides comprehensive care and offers a plethora of procedures. Dedicated time for clinical teaching is also one of my top priorities.

Nina Appleby Hometown - Glencoe, MN Medical School - Des Moines University, Des Moines, IA Favorite movie - Pitch Perfect Interests - I love spending time outdoors, especially fishing, sitting by a campfire, and walking around exploring the city of Rochester. I also enjoy almost any creative hobby from woodworking to sewing and playing guitar to baking. Why Mayo? - I applied to Mayo really not knowing what to expect. When I came for my interview, I was absolutely blown away. I knew right away the people I met were the kind of people I could imagine spending the next three years working with. They were driven and knowledgeable, the kind of people who would push me to be a better physician; but they were also down-to-earth and fun to be around. Additionally, it was clear that active, intentional learning was an essential part of every day in a way I had not seen before. Finally, the clinic in Kasson offered me the opportunity to learn medicine in a setting that mirrors that in which I anticipate practicing after residency. What would be your ideal practice? - My ideal practice would be in a small town in rural Minnesota practicing full spectrum family medicine.

Mark Cipriani Hometown - Rocky River, OH Medical School - University of Utah School of Medicine, Salt Lake City, Utah Favorite Movie - The Lord of the Rings Interests - Being active outdoors with my wife, hiking and camping, playing and watching sports (especially my Cleveland teams), and an occasional Netflix binge. Why Mayo? - The people, the program, and the place. Everyone involved in the program is humble, friendly, and dedicated equally to training outstanding residents while delivering excellent patient care. The program structure allows for the best of both worlds with opportunities provided by an unrivaled academic center and community outpatient training with our clinic in Kasson. The program-wide emphasis on teaching in all settings is unrivaled. Rochester is a great city with a very active community and amenities usually reserved for much larger cities. What would be your ideal practice? - Difficult to say at this point but I know I will be well trained for broad spectrum family medicine and am excited to see where the next 3 years takes my family. I am interested in pursuing a fellowship in sports medicine. Chad Dowell Hometown - Indianola, MS Medical School - William Carey College of Osteopathic Medicine, Hattiesburg, MS Favorite Movie - Jurassic Park Interests - Hunting, fishing, cooking, Ole Miss football, The Grove, anything outdoors. Why Mayo? - I chose Mayo because of the unique balance of rural and urban family medicine. I felt that being able to train in Kasson and downtown Rochester would provide the perfect mix of outpatient and inpatient care. What would be your ideal practice? - I have always wanted to practice in a rural setting. My ideal practice would be to work in a small town clinic and hospital combination. I would also like to be able to provide obstetrical care and a variety of procedures to the community.

Kelsey Dowell Hometown - Atlanta, GA Medical School - William Carey University, Hattiesburg, MS Favorite Movie - Zoolander Interests - I love to spend time outdoors with friends and family. Why Mayo? - Why not?! I love the fact that we spend time at both the Mayo facilities in town and at the more rural Kasson Clinic. What would be your ideal practice? - I want to practice full spectrum family medicine (including obstetrics!) in a rural setting. Pavel Mitaru Hometown - Portland, OR Medical School - Western University of Health Sciences, Lebanon, OR Favorite movie - Lord of the Rings Interests - cooking, basketball, running, staying active and spending time with family Why Mayo? - I got along great with the residents and consultants during my interview. Also, I had heard great things about the program. What would be your ideal practice? - Hard to say at this point! Shane Murphy Hometown - Cork, Ireland Medical School - University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland Favorite Movie - I can't watch the same movie twice! Interests - Anything sports related, particularly Gaelic games, soccer, rugby, and golf. Hoping to add hockey to the list. Why Mayo? - I felt there were no stupid questions at Mayo and that the peak of your learning would only be limited by your own curiosity. What would be your ideal practice? - Semi-rural or small town practice with lots of geriatrics which includes some hospital work and teaching time.

Katherine Schupack Hometown - Mahtomedi, MN Medical School - Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Des Moines, IA Favorite movie - Up Interests - Anything outdoors, cooking with my husband, quality time with family and friends, reading Why Mayo? - Mayo's core value "the needs of the patient come first" was the ultimate reason I chose Mayo. During my third year of medical school, I had the opportunity to work with several graduates of Mayo residency programs and found that all of them approached patients with a level of professionalism, humility, excellence and compassion that I had never seen before. I knew that if I wanted to provide excellent patient-centered care, I should train at Mayo. In addition, Mayo's Family Medicine Residency program gives residents the incredible opportunity to learn from the world's top specialists and practice rural primary care in the same day! I have only begun my training at Mayo, and I have been blown away with the level of support and dedication to my success as a resident and family physician. What would be your ideal practice? - I am not sure yet! I love so many aspects of family medicine and I look forward to seeing where my passions take me! Benjamin Williams Hometown - Centennial Park, AZ Medical School - Touro University Nevada, Henderson, NV Favorite Movies - Pretty much any Guy Ritchie movie: Snatch, RocknRolla, and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels Interests - Hanging out with my family and friends, hiking, attending sports events, fishing, and Netflix Why Mayo? - The educational opportunities available with the specialists in Rochester and the hands-on experience with amazing preceptors and rural atmosphere at Kasson Clinic, I felt Mayo offered the best opportunity to make me a well-rounded physician. Also, the way I was treated by all the staff and residents made Mayo an easy choice. What would be your ideal practice? - Small to medium-sized rural town where I can practice full spectrum medicine. Hopefully I ll have the ability to spend some time in an emergency department or urgent care.

Class of 2019 Leah Clark Hometown Dassel, MN Medical School University of Minnesota-Duluth Favorite Movie - Lots! I especially love series (Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc)! Others: Mulan, The Sound of Music, Remember the Titans, Shutter Island, Good Will Hunting, The Princess Bride, The Proposal Interests - Hanging out with my ridiculously good-looking husband, doing any sports/physical activity but especially competitive volleyball, mountain biking, hiking, and dancing, playing piano on the Mayo pianos, cooking, and conversation and games with family and friends. Why Mayo? - I did a month away rotation at Mayo and felt Mayo was a great fit with its unique combination of the rural clinic in Kasson, access to learn from world renowned specialists in Rochester, hands-on learning in both settings, and welcoming, supportive staff and residents. What would be your ideal practice? - A mix of every area in Family Medicine with an emphasis on procedures and a majority of patients being underserved (ideally rural). I would also like to be involved in education, either as a clinical preceptor or working with a medical school/residency. Benjamin Dilger Hometown Garwin, IA Medical school University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine Favorite movie - Up Interests - Cycling, spending time with family, cooking, reading books Why Mayo? -Mayo provides the best of both worlds in family medicine-training in a small town outpatient clinic paired with world class sub-specialty training. Additionally, there is no substitute for committed and kind support staff! What would be your ideal practice? - I would love to practice family medicine in a small rural town in the upper Midwest, with a combination of outpatient, inpatient, and ED work. Elizabeth Hillebrand Hometown Fond du Lac, WI Medical School Mayo Medical School Favorite Movie any action movie or Disney movie Interests Classical music, scuba diving, woodworking, gardening and yoga Why Mayo? - Growing up in the Mid-West, Mayo was always held as the pinnacle of excellent medical care and I am honored to learn from and work with the best of the best. Ideal Practice - Split between a small town practice in the Midwest and a visiting practice on a tropical island when the weather gets nasty

Manisha Manhas Hometown Nanaimo, British Columbia Medical School The University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland Favorite Movie Free Willy Interests Cooking, spending time with family, hockey Why Mayo? - I had the opportunity to complete a visiting elective at Mayo in my final year of medical school. I was so impressed by the congenial attitude of the residents, excellent teaching, as well as respect and encouragement from the faculty. Everyone is so down to earth and willing to help. Working between the downtown campus and Kasson Clinic, I felt that training at Mayo would allow me to learn a unique mix of urban and rural care. What would be your ideal practice? Practicing broad spectrum care in a rural or semi-urban setting Kyle Moore Hometown Idaho Falls, ID Medical school Pacific Northwestern University of Health Sciences Favorite movie It s a Wonderful Life Interests - I love activities and meals with my wife (Karlee) and two children (Austin and Ivy). We especially love taking trips to see our families in Canada and Idaho. I am involved, and enjoy participation, in my church. Athletics and exercise have always been important to me and I play a wide variety of sports. When I have free time, I also enjoy reading, daydreaming, looking at maps, vacuuming, organizing, and just talking with friends and family. Why Mayo? - In my final year of medical school, I had the opportunity to spend a month at Mayo. That month of training was absolutely remarkable! I kept telling my wife how impressed I was with the education, culture, and environment. The level of professionalism, combined with the fantastic teaching and kindness, impacted me deeply. I felt that the patients at Mayo were incredibly valued and respected. The providers I worked with practiced medicine exactly as I feel it should be practiced. Furthermore, I felt it was a perfect place to train for family medicine because of the access to rural and academic medicine. To top it off, Rochester is a great family community. What would be your ideal practice? - I anticipate a broad spectrum, outpatient practice where I can work hard to improve the health of my community (likely back in the Northwest in a semi-rural location). I certainly want to help care for people of all different backgrounds and ages. Importantly, having a work schedule that allows me to be home for dinner with my family and proper work/life balance are paramount to me.

Allen Pimienta Hometown - Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Go Leafs!) Medical School - Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel Favorite Movie - Lord of the Rings-The Fellowship of the Ring Interests - Soccer, basketball, tennis, ultimate frisbee, fitness, classical guitar, video games, and most importantly spending time with friends and family. Why Mayo? - I did a visiting Sub-Internship here in my fourth year of medical school and had an incredible experience. This program gives you the ability to learn primary care family medicine in a small community setting at the Kasson Clinic with the most advanced and organized care teams and resources. Simultaneously, the big academic hospital that is Mayo Clinic Rochester offers the opportunity to consult and learn from world leaders in nearly every field of medicine. If I could sum this all up in one statement, I would answer that I came to Mayo because I knew I would not receive better training anywhere else. It is an unparalleled opportunity and one must really be here to understand and appreciate it. The flip-side of my answer addresses the non-academics of residency. Really everyone I worked with was so friendly, kind, intelligent and overall awesome. How could I not want train in a place like that? In the short time I was in Rochester as a visiting student, I became friends with the residents, kept in touch after leaving, and genuinely looked forward to come back for my interview and see everyone again. The faculty are knowledgeable, approachable, and excellent teachers that clearly enjoy teaching. I figured residency is going to be a tough, long haul, and I wanted to train in a place that creates the positive and academic atmosphere our program provides in the hope to make the difficult days a little easier. Ideal Practice - Full spectrum family medicine in a suburban or rural setting. Heather Talley Hometown Fountain Valley, CA Medical School Mayo Medical School Favorite Movies Grumpy Old Men Interests Cooking, hiking, surfing, bowling, downhill skiing, reading, board games, exploring small towns, spending time with friends and family Why Mayo? - When looking at residency programs, I wanted to find a system that emphasized world-class, evidence-based training in both an academic and community setting. I also wanted a program that offered full scope training, emphasized individualized holistic care, and promoted a patient-centered educational foundation of learning. Finally, I wanted a residency program where I felt that I truly connected with the people I worked with and served. Mayo offered all these opportunities and so much more. I am so excited to be here! What would be your ideal practice? - Full spectrum family medicine, including preventative medicine, chronic disease management, pediatrics, women's health, and obstetrics. I'd like to have a good balance of both inpatient and outpatient time, and have opportunities to help train future healthcare providers.

Hailon Wong Hometown Oklahoma City, OK Medical school University of Oklahoma College of Medicine Favorite movie - Hard to pick just one, but The Godfather is pretty close to perfect Interests - Running, hiking, spending time outdoors, reading, spending time with my girlfriend, travel, eating food Why Mayo? - I was not originally planning on coming here. I don t really care for the cold, and all of my friends and family are either down South or to the West. However, after interviewing here, I found myself constantly thinking about the benefits of Mayo for family medicine. Importantly, the people here are genuine and friendly. I was also attracted to the program s emphasis on full spectrum family medicine in a beautifully renovated outpatient clinic, its strong focus on inpatient medicine, and all of the resources and connections that come with being one of the best medical centers in the world. I knew this program would help me become the well-rounded family physician I strive to be. What would be your ideal practice? - There are so many things I am interested in, but right now my goal is full-spectrum family medicine with an emphasis on outpatient primary care. Ideally, I would like to work with underserved populations in a small urban community. Additionally, I would love to learn more about and get involved in global health.
