We have established strong partnerships with industry and Scottish universities to provide our students with the best possible opportunities for progression to Social Work, Nursing and other Allied Professions. Within the School of Health and Social Care, there are courses available on various levels available to get you the future you want. If you are just starting your journey to your chosen career, we have access and NC courses in Health and Social Care and Nursing to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to progress on to Higher Education. Our HNC courses include Care and Administration Practice, Social Services and. These courses are designed to give you the practical experience you need for further study at university or to go straight into employment. For professionals looking for qualifications to progress within their chosen career, we have a range of SVQ, PDA and NPA courses in areas such as, Social Services, Leadership and Management, Supervision and Practical Skills. Additionally, our Health and Social Care Academy is an option for young people who are still at school to get a real insight into the skills required to work in the sector. Many of our courses are taught on a fulltime basis, however you will find many flexible options for those who would prefer to study part-time or in the evening. The social work course opened my eyes to the society we live, the constant battle some people have with day-to-day life and I am so proud to say that with the help of the courses and the lectures I am ready now more than ever to go out and help those in need and make a difference in the world of social work! KAYLA LANDALE FORMER STUDENT, HNC SOCIAL SERVICES HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE ACADEMY The Health and Social Care Academy provides a good opportunity to gain an extra qualification as well as knowledge and experience behind the Social Care area of work that would not be available elsewhere. I strongly believe choosing this course has been worthwhile as I have been given the opportunity to go on work placement and gain an insight to what work may be available to me. FORMER STUDENTS, HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE ACADEMY PARTNERS The Social Service HNC course was diverse and covered a wide range of topics that allowed the class to have great conversations and debates, it was not only stimulating but it also opened my eyes to society and the health and care sector. This course has allowed me to reach for a better and more fulfilling career and as a result of my work I gained a permanent job role with Midlothian Council as a Children s Services Practitioner. I highly recommend this course to those who want to learn the theories behind our practice, I promise you that it won t be disappointing. Do it!!! ALAN MCKENNA FORMER STUDENT, HNC SOCIAL SERVICES I worked as a carer for a few years and I decided to study to become a mental health nurse. Edinburgh College gave me an opportunity to learn and develop. I received a huge amount of support and guidance from my lecturers last year while studying a National 5 in Care course. I was delighted to complete it and receive the grades I was hoping for. It helped me progress to NC Nursing and I am determined to progress further. Health & Social Care University Access to Nursing MR S F 6 If you have been out of formal education for more than three years and are looking to pursue a degree in nursing, but don t yet have the necessary qualifications, then this is the ideal course for you. You must be out of formal education for more than three years. A positive attitude, good communication skills, and a genuine interest in nursing are required. Experience of working in a care setting is desirable. Other relevant qualifications/experience will be considered. Social Services HNC MD S F E 7 This course is ideal if you aim to develop a career in social care. This SSSC recognised qualification gives you the theoretical and practical experience you need to ensure you are prepared for further study. 2 Highers including English, or NC Health and Social Care. National 5 Maths is required if you wish to progress to a social work degree at university. Adult learners with relevant employment/life experience/skills will be considered for entry to this course. A Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check will be carried out at the beginning of the course. Places are conditional on this being satisfactory. Care and Administration Practice HNC S F 7 This course will give you the knowledge and skills required to prepare you for undergraduate study in nursing and other health related degrees. 2 Highers including English. National 5 Biology and Maths or equivalent. Adult learners with relevant employment/life experience/skills will be considered for entry to this course. A Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check will be carried out at the beginning of the course as well as a health questionnaire. Places are conditional on this being satisfactory. COSCA Certificate In Skills (Module 1) MR S P E 8 The COSCA certificate is a theoretical and practical course. You will develop the ability to establish a safe, trusting, helping relationship with another person by becoming a Reflective Practitioner. No formal requirements. You must complete a successful interview. HNC S F E 7 Take the next step towards your career in counselling. Offering a systematic, integrative approach derived from the work of Gerard Egan, you will learn from a strong client-centre emphasis. 4 National 4s including English or relevant Level 4/National 4 full-time course. If you want to progress onto health courses at SCQF Level 6, you must have National 4 Biology. Adult learners with relevant employment/life experience/skills will be considered for entry to this course. This course is subject to change, please check the website for updates. Nursing NC MR S F 6 If you are a school leaver and looking to pursue a career in Nursing then this course is for you. 1 Higher and 5 National 5s including English and Biology. You should be over 17. Other relevant qualifications/experience will be considered. This course is subject to change, please check the website for updates. Health and Wellbeing Access to Study S F 5 If you are interested in studying childcare, social care, health care, sport or social science but don t currently have the entry requirements, this course is for you. Intermediate level of reading, writing and numeracy. Successful completion of basic counselling skills training e.g NC Introduction to or equivalent. Higher level qualifications or equivalent. Adult returners may need to evidence ability through the submission of a written task. Introduction to MR S P E O 5 The aim of the course is to introduce you to some of the concepts and skills required to offer support through the use of listening and responding skills. Communities Basic reading and writing skills are required. Working with Communities HNC S F 7 If you are working or volunteering with community based groups, this course is designed to provide you with an opportunity to gain a professional qualification in Community Learning and Development (CLD). Students can progress from this course to university or working in CLD. Health and Social Care Academy (SESAP) MR S P 5/6 This Academy is specifcally for senior phase school pupils. The course gives you the opportunity to achieve a relevant qualification in Health and Social Care. It will allow you to develop the necessary skills for entry to college, university or employment. 2 Highers. Adult learners with relevant employment/life experience/skills will be considered for entry to this course. Working with Communities SCQF Level 6 S F 6 This course will give you the opportunity to gain an initial qualification in Community Learning and Development (CLD). Progression from this course is onto HNC level study. Schools 3 passes at SCQF 5 or equivalent, or relevant NC course completed at SCQF Level 5. Selection for this course is competitive and based on your interview as well as your application form, not just your academic qualifications.

Throughout her studies, Kirsty worked full-time doing night shift and juggled this with caring responsibilities, but still managed to complete her award.

6 SPOTLIGHT PRIZE WINNERS // THE CHAIR S AWARD FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN HEALTH, WELLBEING & SOCIAL SCIENCE WINNER - KIRSTY LOVE NHS LOTHIAN ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNER - GARRY DEAR Kirsty completed the HNC Social Care course, which runs over two years. During this time she was diagnosed with dyslexia, which proved very traumatic for her and took her a few months to come to terms with. Throughout her studies, Kirsty worked full-time doing night shift and juggled this with caring responsibilities, but still managed to complete her award. She has now secured promotion within her workplace and applied for university. Garry has a genuine passion to help and care for people. Through determination and strength, he changed his own life in a positive way after facing personal adversity. In 2013, Garry came to Edinburgh College and completed the NHS NC Health and Social Care course, which led to a clinical support worker role at NHS Lothian. Staff there saw the potential in him and supported him to apply for the HNC Care and Administrative Practice course. Garry successfully completed his HNC and is now on the second year of the nurse degree programme at Edinburgh Napier University.
