2 Reception and Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria kicks off the German-Arab Health Conference. The first German-Arab Health Conference was opened on the eve of the conference by way of a gala reception and dinner at the Waldorf Astoria. Proceedings were started by Friedolin Strack, Head of the International Markets Department at the Federal Association of German Industry (BDI) and Member of the Advisory Board of the GHP. Mr Strack set the scene on a special occasion by specifically welcoming the guests from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and outlining the existing areas of cooperation between Germany and Saudi Arabia in many areas of business. The guests included guests of honour such as H.E. Dr Khalid Al Shaibani, Deputy Minister for Planning and Health & Director of the Vision Realization Office at the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia, and a number of ambassadors. Mr Abdulaziz Al-Mikhlafi of Ghorfa (Arab- German Chamber of Commerce and Industry) echoed Mr Strack s sentiments of existing shared business opportunities, and laid out an exciting vision for the future of this relationship. Mr Al-Mikhlafi went to say that it is exactly forums like this that promote mutually beneficial future business endeavours in healthcare under Vision Following the first course, Mr Michael Burkhart, Healthcare&Pharma Industry Leader of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), addressed the honourable guests as the gold sponsor of the conference event. Mr Burkhart illustrated how mutual understanding is crucial when embarking on cooperation between Germany and Saudi Arabia in the area of healthcare. 3 The German Healthcare Partnership (GHP) and the City of Berlin open the conference day at the Hotel Adlon Kempinski The conference moderator Hans-Peter Bursig, Managing Director of the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers Association, opened the conference and introduced the first welcome speeches. Roland Göhde (right), Chairman of the Board of the GHP, welcomed all guests of honour and conference participants and instilled a proactive spirit into the conference that would be felt during the entire day. Mr Göhde highlighted that Berlin is the very place where the health ministers G20 countries, including Saudi Arabia and Germany, first came together to discuss the challenges for international health systems today and in the future. Boris Velter (right), State Secretary for Health, Care & Equality of the City of Berlin followed with welcome remarks of his own to represent the host city. Mr Velter outlined that Berlin is not only a political centre of Europe, but that it is also a leading public health hub with many world-class hospitals, research centres, and industry representations. Deputy Minister Dr Al Shaibani, Minister Zypries, and Dr Montag give their keynote speeches The guests of honour gave their keynote speeches to a packed plenary hall following the welcome remarks. H. E. Khalid Dr Al Shaibani (below) gave a riveting presentation on the Kingdom s healthcare challenges such as access, disease burden and financial sustainability, and its plans to achieve population health management by development Accountable Care Organizations. Dr Al Shaibani rounded off his speech by giving an insight into the privatization plans of the Ministry of Health. Brigitte Zypries (below), Germany s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy picked up the baton to deliver her keynote speech. Ms Zypries started by praising the long history of economic cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Germany, calling for a deepening of this relationship in the healthcare sector. Ms Zypries went on to stress that both countries must wake up to the international competition with other major players in the world that are competing for the same markets. 2

4 Dr Bernd Montag (below), CEO of Siemens Healthineers (platin sponsor of the conference), then delivered the third and final keynote speech of the day. Dr Montag made the central point of working towards better health outcomes at lower costs and, crucially, to empower healthcare providers to do so. This includes expanding precision medicine, transforming care delivery, and improving the patient experience as a whole, all made possible by digitalizing healthcare. The keynote speeches from all three guests of honour set the fitting inquisitive and proactive spirit for the following panel discussions and breakout sessions. The first panel on improving patient outcomes discussion gives important context to Saudi Arabia s healthcare system. The first panel discussion of the day focused on ways to improve patient outcomes while modernising a healthcare system with economic returns. Dr Basma Al Buhairan, Managing Director of Health Care & Life Sciences at Saudi Arabia s General Investment Authority (SAGIA) was joined by Eng. Sarry Wael Al Buraik, Advisor to the CEO at King Fahad Medical City, Stefan Friedrich, Healthcare Partner at KPMG, and Anja Nitzsche-Bell, Section Head of Resource Mobilization from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) (above, in that order). The discussion kicked off with Dr Basma outlining how Saudi Arabia is an attractive market for international healthcare investors, especially from Germany. Regarding the modernisation aspect of the debate, Mr Friedrich (below, centre) gave some real-world examples of hospitals in Saudi Arabia that are not using their resources to deliver the best possible patient outcomes in the context of their capacity. A crucial point is to find ways of using the existing health services to its maximum capacity in order to achieve improved patient outcomes. Ms Nitzsche-Bell of the IAEA outlined the role of nuclear medicine in radiology in modernising a healthcare system with improved technology and diagnostics in order to serve patients better. In addition to these points, Eng. Al Buraik gave vital insights from the King Fahad Medical City and how the institution is taking steps of modernising their healthcare delivery while controlling costs in the face of changing disease burdens and demand for care. The breakout sessions provide a forum for detailed discussions on the biggest challenges in Vision 2030 Session I was entitled Healthcare Regulation, Model of Care, Insurance & Reimbursement, and moderator Hans-Peter Bursig was joined by Mohammed Bin Salman Al Hussein, Secretary 3

5 General, Council of Cooperative Health Insurance Dr Michael Bitzer, CEO, Munich Health Daman Holding, Dr Naifah Al Shalan, Healthcare Counselor at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Germany and Irmtraut Gürkan Deputy Chairperson, Heidelberg University Hospital (below in that order, moderator Bursig on the right). Initiative des Bundesverbands der Deutschen Industrie (BDI) The panel discussion reached a remarkable technical level of discussion, fuelled by the thoughtful contributions by the panellist and the challenging questions of the audience. The discussion raised a number of points, including the future role of the Ministry of Health as a regulator, and the future of health insurance in the country. Session II discussed Privatization in Healthcare: Clinical Excellence and Cost Efficiency. Moderator Oliver Oehms, Delegate of German Industry & Commerce for Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Yemen, was joined by H.E. Dr Al Shaibani (below), Deputy Minister for Planning and Health & Director of the Vision Realization Office at the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia, Daniel Bahr, former Health Minister of Germany and current Member of the Board at Allianz, Dr Reinhard Wichels, Managing Director of WMC Healthcare, Dr Yasser Assiri, Director of Support Services in PSP Vision Realization Office at the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia. 4 Session III discussed the subject Diagnostics & Digitalization: Enabling the Transformation. Jad Ayoub, Business Director of the Middle East & Africa Region of Bioscientia, moderated the panel discussion composed of Prof. Dr Klaus Lindpaintner, Scientific Director at the King Abdullah International Medical Research Centre, Prof. Dr Erwin Böttinger of the Hasso-Plattner Institute at the University of Potsdam, and Prof. Dr med. Stefan Schönberg, Director of the Clinical Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the University of Mannheim. The discussion focused on the opportunities of digital health and improved diagnostics in enabling Saudi Arabia s healthcare transformation through use of tools like information technology and bioinformatics. The final breakout Session IV was curated by the gold sponsor of the conference (PwC) and

6 deliberated on: New Delivery Models: Supporting Population Health. Moderated by PwC s Healthcare&Pharma Industry Leader Michael Burkhart, the panel was composed of Dr Jens Schick, Member of the Board at Sana Kliniken AG, Dr Tim Wilson, Middle East Industries Leader at PwC, Dr Axel Paeger, CEO, Chairman of the Board, Member of the Board of Directors, and Founder of AMEOS, and Dr Haitham Mohammed Alfalah, CEO of King Saud Medical City. The discussion focused on how Saudi Arabia could find new delivery models to improve health, and Dr Haitham of the King Saud Medical City contributed first-hand experiences in his presentations and through his interventions. The breakout sessions were followed by lunch as the discussions continued in a lively exchange. The Future of Healthcare and the Closing Speech of the Conference conclude the conference The afternoon of the conference was kicked off with a presentation by Dr Werner Eberhardt, Chief Product Officer of SAP Health gave an insight into the opportunities digital health solutions can offer. These range from real world evidence to provide better treatment selection in near real time and to empower patients with digital health records. Dr Eberhardt then took place on a panel discussion together with Dr Mahmoud Al-Yamany, CEO of King Fahad Medical City and Sonja Wehsely, Head of 5 The discussion left the audience with plenty of food for thought as the next session summarised the breakout sessions with the three session moderators and Dr Michael Meyer, Head of Strategy & Business Development at Siemens Healthineers. The conference was closed by a passionate and invigorating speech delivered by Prof. Dr Detlev Ganten (below). Prof. Dr Ganten highlighted the spirit and aim of the World Health Summit and reminded the audience of their responsibility to improve health. It was a fitting end to a stimulation conference that provided many insights to an informed audience on some of the most significant challenges for Saudi Arabia s healthcare transformation in the context of Vision A special thanks goes to the conference moderator Hans-Peter Bursig who only had a few hours to prepare following the original moderator s sudden illness.
