The Stevens Architectural Glass Competition 2012 ST MICHAEL S HOSPICE, HEREFORD A Window for the new In-Patient Unit Competitors are invited to design off-plan for the feature window (1140mm x 3100mm) on the West wall of the new In-Patient Reception
St Michael s Hospice, Hereford A Window for the New In-Patient Unit The project put forward for the Stevens Competition 2012 is to design a feature window (approximately 1140 mm wide x 3100mm high) in the innovative new purpose-built In- Patient Unit at St Michael s Hospice which will connect with, enchant and engage an audience, leaving them with a sense of welcome, curiosity, confidence and trust. Introduction Over a period of 25 years St Michael s has provided Specialist Palliative and End-of-Life Care services in the beautiful and tranquil countryside of Herefordshire and to the surrounding counties. As well as caring for and supporting those coping with a terminal illness, the Hospice has encouraged research and promoted education into the care and treatment of people who are living with a life-limiting illness and disseminated that knowledge widely. Today, St Michael s is recognised as the lead provider of Specialist Palliative Care in the County, as the centre for palliative care education in the Three Counties and is at the forefront of social and spiritual care. It is recognised nationally and internationally for innovative and creative ways of responding to the changing needs and expectations of its population. Through an enormous and sustained effort by dedicated and enthusiastic staff and volunteers and through local, enduring commitment it now stands as a beacon in the Community. We are proud of the quality of our services and the care we give; practice a philosophy that the patient and their family always come first and believe that if opportunities can be created to promote quality of life and well-being, in however small a way, then we should strive to enable them to happen. St Michael s Hospice likes to think of itself as innovative, resourceful, progressive and influential. The re-development of the Hospice is a transformational opportunity to secure the delivery of High Quality Specialist Palliative Care services responding to the increasing demand, significantly improving the care for those with complex needs and retaining a facility for choice of healthcare today and for the future. Background There are over 200 adult hospices in the UK which provide care to people with advanced progressive life-limiting conditions. Care of the dying has been developed over thousands of years. As new treatments became available, such care focused on the management of 1
physical symptoms and subsequently expertise developed in the management of the emotional, social and spiritual difficulties that a patient and their family face as the condition progresses. Modern hospices were founded in 1967 to provide this allencompassing care known as palliative care which focuses on the quality of life of those affected. St Michael s Hospice is in Bartestree, about 5 miles east of Hereford. The Hospice was the dream of local people who combined their ideas and worked tirelessly with local fundraisers to raise money for the building and for the care to be given in it. The site of the Hospice is in the former orchard of the Convent of Our Lady of Charity and Refuge, designed by Pugin and founded in The former convent situated to the North of the Hospice has been converted to apartments whilst agricultural land lies to the South and West. The former priest s house lies to the East of the Hospice and has been converted to a dwelling. The current main In-Patient Building was opened in 1984 with a Day Hospice facility added in The re-development of the Hospice will provide a major new 20 bed In-Patient Unit to the West of the existing facility, whilst the current buildings will be significantly upgraded to deliver established Day Hospice, Clinical Assessment and Outpatient services, a wide range of new In-Reach activities, Creative Therapies, Group Work, Salons and Skills Assessment. Other parts of the site will be adapted and extended to provide a headquarters for the Hospice s education department; a central double stacked space at the heart of the building will deliver a range of integrated services including Kitchens, Reception, Spiritual Care space, Shop, Cafe, Children and Adolescent Areas, Volunteer Hub and Staff Accommodation which support the new In-Patient Unit and Day Hospice/Outpatient and In- Reach facilities. Therapeutic gardens and landscaped grounds will deliver private gardens and delightful space immediately around the building through to more open areas of meadow with swales and paths out into the wider landscape. St Michael s believe that the provision of access to the landscape is integral to patient, staff and visitor well-being and to providing a dynamic and changing environment throughout the year. Within the new Hospice we want to achieve enchanting, reflective, empowering, joyous and hopeful spaces which embrace the concept of wellness. The Building: See Appendices Ai, Aii, Aiii The building has been designed by Architype Architects who have worked closely with the Project Team to design a unique facility which is at the forefront of specialist palliative care. In putting together the Project the Hospice has consulted widely with staff, volunteers, patients and carers and is working in collaboration with local stakeholders and a range of interested bodies in the region and nationally. 2
Main Brief (See Appendices A E) The New In-Patient Unit at St Michael s Hospice The new In-Patient Unit will be located to the West of the existing building. This major new centre will improve the privacy and dignity of patients by providing 20 en-suite single patient rooms designed around 5 clusters of 4 rooms arranged around local communal space accessible by patients, their carers and guests. It will make patients journeys as enabling and hopeful as possible within an excellent, forward thinking and positive environment. Competitors will be invited to design off plan for the feature window on the west wall of the new In-Patient Reception. The Hospice provides a range of highly specialist support for patients, their family and friends practical, medical, emotional and spiritual. The fundamental aim of the Hospice is to alleviate physical, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual pain and distress. St Michael s cares for people with any progressive, life-limiting condition, people of all faiths and none and completely free of charge. The In-Patient Reception: See Appendix B: 3D visualisations The new In-Patient Reception will be a multi-purpose space linking all aspects of care. The focus of the waiting area will be the west window next to the main reception desk. The window will be wholly or partially visible from many angles within this space and from two proposed seating areas. Located in the main In-Patient Reception the window will also be visible from the Hospice s main reception and as such may serve the function of a way marker. Competitors are asked to consider carefully the visual appearance of the glass from both the inside and the outside. The Environment The colour palette for the interior design of the In-Patient Unit has not currently been finalised. There is opportunity, therefore, for the reception area to respond to the window design, perhaps serving as a punctuation point along the route. 3
Technical Brief: See Appendix C: Window dimensions Feature window dimensions: 1140mm W x 3090mm H. Measurements shown give the sizes for the interior of the opening. Triple-glazed timber frame, externally clad with aluminium, the colour is to be determined. Fixing Issues: See Appendix Di, Dii Public Safety: Competitors are expected to consider and indicate the cost and type of appropriate glass and other fixings, if used, to conform to Health and Safety requirements in a public space. The work should be of a robust nature, not easily damaged and reasonably easy to clean. There should be no sharp edges or finger traps. Budget: Following the Judging, St Michael s Hospice will consider commissioning one of the competition entries. The maximum budget for the commission is 15,000 to include all costs design, making, delivery and installation.
