3 Knowledge for welfare and health 3 STAKES is a sector research institute As a sector research institute, STAKES mission is to provide decision makers on all levels of society with policy-relevant research. Academic research is free to choose its topics and themes. Sector research institutes, in turn, are expected to anticipate what kind of knowledge and understanding is needed and is relevant to the development of society at large. The mission is different but what is similar is the quality of research. Work in sector research institutes is not based on opinions or views but strictly on high-quality research methods. The issue of relevance is very topical, and so it that of outcomes and effectiveness.

4 Knowledge for welfare and health 4 One of STAKES key tasks is information dissemination. This conference will focus on the dissemination of research results and is therefore also very important for us.

The group was very active Its task was to provide consultancy to the Commission It represented a wide range of multidisciplinary expertise It gradually gained cohesion The atmosphere was positive and warm The Commission representatives were professional, ambitious and excellent

10 Knowledge for welfare and health 10 Conclusions The key action on ageing has established a clear baseline for European research contributing to improving the quality of life of older European citizens providing research-based knowledge for enabling society to adapt to the changing conditions brought on by an ageing of the European population.

12 Knowledge for welfare and health 12 The need for continuation.. of research initiatives on ageing is due to the enormity of the tasks which lie ahead Research-based solutions will be needed to feed into medical and industrial innovation on a massive scale, not only in terms of products and systems for disability and rehabilitation, and innovations for prevention and care, but also for enabling a higher standard of living and quality of life for increasingly active senior citizens.

14 Knowledge for welfare and health 14 Ageing RTD has to be tackled at the European and not only national levels. The endeavours of Key Action 6 to boost a holistic approach to gerontological research were only a partial success. KA6 was seriously under-financed in view of the importance of the topic investigated, i.e. the ageing of the European population.

15 Knowledge for welfare and health 15 We strongly believe that a structure like the EAG has been vital for the development of this area of research. We recommend that the Commission continues with advisory structures throughout its activities.

16 Knowledge for welfare and health 16 What after this Conference? The need to continue the dissemination of research results will prevail and be a responsibility of all researchers and administrators. A booklet will be published in paper and electronic form for free distribution concerning the presentations and discussions of this Conference.
