1 UPMC Shadyside Part of UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside For Families and Friends Welcome Welcome to Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). Your health and well-being are our primary concerns. We know that this may be a difficult time for you and your family as you think about your stay here. We will do everything possible to make you comfortable. We have prepared this booklet for the families and friends of patients at UPMC Shadyside. Especially if this is your first visit to the area, an important part of caring for you includes helping you and your family become familiar with the city of Pittsburgh and its Shadyside section, as well as with UPMC Shadyside. Exploring Pittsburgh If you have an opportunity to explore some of the Pittsburgh area while you are here, you may be pleasantly surprised by what you find. Pittsburgh has been listed in leading popular magazines as among the nation s best cities in which to live and work. With its downtown area located on a triangle of land where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers join to form the Ohio River, Pittsburgh is a regional center for business, industry, research, education, recreation, and the arts. Few of the steel mills that gave Pittsburgh its prominence as an industrial giant remain. Today, the health care industry, high-tech companies, and service industries employ most Pittsburghers. 2 Affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences, UPMC is committed to providing quality patient care and health care coverage, increasing biomedical knowledge through research, and educating the next generation of health care professionals. Because of the health system s size and the breadth of its specialty areas, it can be both exciting and overwhelming.
