1 SHORT COURSES IN Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Health October June 2009 Presented by an interdisciplinary team of academic staff from the National Heart and Lung Institute and Imperial College Health Care NHS Trust Imperial College MSc in Preventive Cardiology Organised by The Centre for Professional Development, Imperial College London Consultants A Centre for Professional Development Programme
2 Introduction Within the UK context specifically, cardiovascular disease prevention is currently high on the national health agenda (Putting Prevention First, Department of Health, 2008). These short courses aim to address the opportunity that the combined research and clinical expertise that this group provides, by giving students a scientifically based course, interdisciplinary in nature and addressing all areas of cardiovascular disease prevention and rehabilitation, delivered by Professor David Wood and Specialists from the EUROACTION Project. EUROACTION is the largest European clinical trial to date in evaluating a nurse-led multidisciplinary preventive cardiology programme (Wood et al, Lancet, 2008). It has spanned eight countries and 24 hospital and general practice centres, in a cluster randomised controlled trial. The project addressed the cardiovascular health of over 10,000 coronary and high risk patients and their partners, according to the European preventive cardiology guidelines. The inclusion of partners and family members underpinned EUROACTION's emphasis on family support and a shared commitment to heart-healthy living. What will I Learn on these Courses? Participants will learn about the theory of preventive cardiology and the application of evidence based principles to real world clinical practice. The modules cover the complete spectrum of preventive cardiology from patients with established atherosclerotic disease, the relatives of patients with premature atherosclerotic disease and asymptomatic people, including those with diabetes, at high multifactorial risk of developing this disease. The scientific foundation of this programme is lifestyle change (smoking cessation, healthy food choices and physical activity) through behavioural approaches, together with weight management, medical management of blood pressure, blood lipids and blood glucose and use of cardioprotective drug therapies. The Clinical Team from the Charing Cross Hospital Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation Programme and CVD risk clinics, offer observational visits to participants. Who Should Attend? This programme is aimed at physicians, nurses, dietitians, physiotherapists, physical activity specialists, sports scientists, pharmacists, psychologists, occupational therapists and any other health professional with a role in prevention of cardiovascular disease. Certificate and Assessment Each Participant will receive a certificate of attendance from Imperial College at the end of the module(s). Participants who complete the assessment will be provided with an official Imperial College University transcript. Please be aware that these short courses cannot contribute as credits towards the MSc in Preventive Cardiology at Imperial College at a later date. CME Approval & Certificate of Attendance CME/CPD approval applied for. All participants will be aearded a Certificate of Attendanceon completion of the course.
